I missed have missed that Mathews quote, have you got a link?

Also losing isn't a set value. Losing but getting two picks in the 20s as compensation is a hell of a lot better than losing and getting nothing.
You must have missed must because missed is where must must be.

Yes, and our song is based on the tune of La Marseillaise, but when it says "we'll answer to the call" we aren't talking about going back to the 1790s to help France fight a war against Austria.
Well maybe you're not saying that but I sure as hell am. My work on the flux capacitor continues

Edit: yes I'm just catching up and its glorious

What you reckon doesn't really matter. It's what Brisbane think is "fair value" for Aish. Matthews has made it fairly clear that two picks in the 20's is not good enough to entertain a win/win trade for Aish. Under that scenario, the Lions lose.
Yeah we all know that in this case Brisbane can't win - Collingwood are never going to offer what they want and I think there is now about 0% chance of Aish staying in Brisbane. I just don't think anyone has satisfactorily explained why letting a player go for nothing is better than getting compensation for him - especially something like two early second round picks which is pretty decent. There have to be better ways of encouraging players to stay at the club than the threat of the PSD. I mean it's not even that strong a threat in this environment since most players who've entered the PSD are getting to where they want.

Lethal's posture actually sets up both teams to save a little face, which is ultimately what both teams want.

But it requires Collingwood to come to the party with a GOOD trade offer. Not the bare minimum.

Then Brisbane fans can say "finally, we got properly compensated for a wantaway kid, unlike 2 years ago.. now players and clubs know we aren't just a feeder club."

And Pies cans say say "how awesome are we... I thought Brisso said they weren't trading him under any circumstances... onya Dekka!"

Remarkably similar to the Beams trade really. Including all the ultimately unnecessary Bigfooty consternation. Glad we have risen above and turned this into a party thread :D

Thats about how I reckon it will play out....and I suspect many are playing in the background to make sure it does.

There are a few key differences between this deal and the Beams deal though.

(a) If, as many expect, Treloar costs us two first round picks then we will have nothing to trade that's acceptable for Brisbane.

(b) Beams was contracted so we were in a stronger position to play hard ball imo.

(c) The only way Collingwood can lose is if they pay overs for Aish in a trade. If Aish goes into the PSD and gets picked up by Carlton we lose nothing. If Aish goes into the PSD and we pick him up we are massive winners. It may well be in our best interests to refuse to deal with Brisbane and hope we get Aish in the PSD. This will be made easier by comments made by Brisbane to the press that they are not trading Aish. That is, we won't look like pricks in the same way St Kilda would if they refused to trade for Freeman and picked him up in the PSD.

Personally I think the comments made by Mathews were counter productive for any possible trade and suggest they are pretty determined to make a stand on this one. The comments made by Balme also suggest that imo - if they were actually seriously negotiating a trade Balme would never have made the comments he did on the SEN. I highly doubt anything gets done which is a pity imo.

Get Beams to get in steele sidebottom's ear about a move to brisbane.. have been best mates for years.. I'd be satisified if we got him as part of the Aish trade
It is true that Steele and Beams are great mates. What do you think Beams would say to Steele to convince him to move to Brisbane?

Why Collingwood would not the Hawks or tigers be a big enough Melbourne club for him to go too , if that's what he wants ! Both could give way more than those horrid pies

Oh unless Eddie Is offering incentives ??? You gotta wonder !

I think (hope) that Collingwood would be smarter than trying to low ball Brisbane with this trade.

It looks like Collingwood it being very targeted with its recruiting this year and only going for top talent, so you'd imagine that they know they are going to have to give up something. Which is already true - we are losing Freeman and probably Seedsman. Both of these trades have probably been sanctioned in the knowledge that they might produce enough to get the Aish deal done with Brisbane. I don't think both would be leaving otherwise.

Interesting, isn't it? I mean, it is pretty irresponsible to commit to buying something that you can't afford right now (2015 draft picks) nor can you purchase on credit (2016 draft picks). A buyer seeking to enter into this transaction in good faith would surely do so knowing that they'd be able to pay for what they want to purchase.

Unless, of course, the buyer never intended to enter the negotiations in good faith.....in which case, the seller is probably entitled to tell them to GAGF.

Hmm..maybe. Aish will have the option of re-signing with the Brisbane Lions after the conclusion of the trade period, if he wants.

"The concept of trading is everyone wins.......trading your young players is you can't win, so therefore don't trade them. An uncontracted player, after the trade period, if they want to, can still put themselves into the normal draft."
- Leigh Matthews. October 8th 2015.

I just don't think anyone has satisfactorily explained why letting a player go for nothing is better than getting compensation for him - especially something like two early second round picks which is pretty decent.
Decent for Collingwood certainly. Decent for Brisbane? Matthews says no.

Keep Pick 7 and pick Aish up there in the National Draft for nothing. Isn't that preferable to a trade with Brisbane? There's no need to wait until Pick 25 or Pick 27 is there? After all if Aish is worth that, then he'll still be available when that pick comes round.
