I didn't see the interview but didn't someone mention that this 'policy' was in place when dal santo was starting out in the early 00s? I would take a guess and say that it is a bit different now and likely looked at on a case by case basis as circumstances dictate. It still doesn't incentivise honest dialogue mind you.
No, pretty sure Dal Santo made the distinction he was NOT a young player at the time.

Coops has earnt the right too do whatever he likes. He will be doing everything to make this year successful and also doing everything possible to ensure future success. He is working very closely with the young bloke Brandon Smith in hope he is the next big thing. As he said he will always be a storm man. Not sure as AFL fans weather we could of handled Browny going to Hawthorn his last couple of years, it's just a different dynamic. Mind you the fact a lot of them rate an origin win over a premiership I can't fathom!!

I reckon we'd be a better team if we could borrow some Broncos players
I'm not sure about that.

I've given this topic a bit of thought. I believe the two codes rely on two different types of body types. More likely to find a few Union players who could cross over. There are probably a few AFL players who have the body type to play League and vice versa, but over all, I believe the number would be relatively low.

Another thing I find curious is comparing AFL players and their development to NBA players and their development. In AFL there is a lot of talk of KPP's and especially rucks taking time to develop. Most of the rucks are only Small Forward or wing size when compared to basketball player sizes, 6'6" to 6'9" (198cm to 207cm) . In the NBA, these are guys who are incredibly fluid athletes and in todays NBA are often expected to contribute significantly from the age 20 - 21. Of course they still mature and develop their game until their mid 20's.

When the AFL holds their USA camps, the US college kids who are showing up, are typically reserves at very small colleges and universities (basketball program wise) who have no shot at all what so ever of making a career in basketball. While the AFL should be applauded for taking the initiative to attract athletes from other countries and sports, the calibre of athlete attending the USA camps is staggeringly low compared to what is potentially available from the college basketball ranks of players who won't make a career out basketball.

Cory Oates may go alright as a mobile ruckman. But thats about it. Only player on that ****** clubs list i would consider. Rest are useless as the proverbial.
Would be a pretty short Ruckman.

Dodongo will castrate Dodongo if Schache leaves. Dodongo is confident to put Dodongo's balls on the table! Dodongo will raffle them off to a lucky member on this board if Schache leaves.

Dodongo has spoken!
But that will mean no more siblings for Dodongo's eldest son Dodongo Jr and no more uncles and aunties for Dodongo's eldest son Dodongo Jr's 8 kids!

OTOH I could do with a pair.

If there were no academy would Hipwood have gone into Basketball?
Cricket. Was a really good junior cricketer.

Given the national side's dearth of all-rounders, the Aussie selectors would probably be well served to cast their eyes over Sunshine Coast junior Eric Hipwood.

On the weekend, Hipwood reached a momentous milestone after snaring his second hat-trick of the year for the Buderim under-13s cricket side.

What makes the feat all the more remarkable is the fact he did it in his maiden year in the game.

"I've always loved cricket," he said. "Mum just never used to let me play."

Hipwood brought up his second hat-trick of the year against Nambour, finishing the game with figures of 4-10.

As if his heroics with the ball weren't enough, he also topped the batting with 40 (not out) before being forced to retire.

He brought up his first hat-trick of the year against Kenilworth, ending that game with the ultra-economic figures of 4-4.

A keen soccer, futsal and Aussie rules player, Hipwood is also training for a triathlon later in the year.

Great photographic imagery - aussie selectors lack of foresight, a 'balls up'?

And a balls up of another proportion!

It would depend on the circumstances but I disagree that it is necessarily a 'maturity thing'. Schache is a perfect example. If he said tomorrow that he would be leaving at the end of the year I would be advocating for him to spend the rest of the year in the 2s.

Why would a young developing list play a guy who will not be there the following season. Why would a young developing list (essentially) develop a player for another team whilst holding back the development of other players who they know will be there the following season.
Would the club not be better served by enhancing his trade value? Surely a 2nd year player with a proven A grade record would be more valuable than an accomplished reserves player.

I remember posting about who Josh was living with not too long ago. He mentioned in locker talk this week that his newest housemate is Witherden, so he must be living a with a few other players as well. Curious as to why he stopped living with Keays, Matho and Skinner so soon.

Yeah would be a shame, Keays and Matho bleed for the Lions and Skinner is a top bloke. They would have been great company for him that are pro Lions.
Worst position, imo, that a player out of contract could be with is someone who isn't in the senior lineup, rookies and/or players that are in the rehab so long
