Just following up a thread on the main board about coaches, and specifically which one would be favoured to cop the sack first

just wondering how many here have an opinion ...
but i do believe there's a real chance, IF the swans are really struggling and fall right off the pace early in the season (thus justifying the talk of our imminent decline), that rather than put the club in an awkward spot over his position, roos may very possibly bring forward his planned handover to john longmire (at the moment it's planned for post-2009)

I dont know if it would put the club in an awkward position or not because regardless of our performance in 08 the job would be Roos again in 09 if he wanted it.To be honest though if we did have a poor season in 08 i would expect him to stay around in 09 and try and leave the list in a better state than it is currently. My biggest concern would be the point you have made about the planned handover to Longmire as we dont know post 09 weather he would be the best available coach to takeover as should be the clubs aim.Have to agree with Bedford as he has constantly reminded us on here,Roos has created a jobs for the boys enviroment in Sydney and that will be to the clubs detriment in the future if it continues.Just handing the job over to Longmire without exploring all options after Roos reign smacks of the culture Bedford is talking about.

on the list thing, roos had better get to work on it, because right now he's risking leaving us in a position where we have ageing players who won't get offers anywhere else, while our younger players, fed up with getting no senior time and being stuck playing in the canberra league, asking to be traded for better opportunities...THAT is a real danger through season 08 if we don't at least look to be testing several of the kids we've drafted in the past few years
i mean, why would, say, dan o'keefe want to stay at the club if he plays the year in the twos (having been injured most of last year, i believe), performs well and gets maybe a coupla emergency listings, but is stuck in a kind of limbo after two years at the club

as for the handover, i have real faith in longmire, i think he's a good coach in waiting who'll have had a real swans education under roos
the danger there is that he becomes too much an advocate of roos' style of play rather than attempt to develop his own

i am a big wrap for the "horse" but when he takes over he will have been out of the game for quite a few years.
this is why our coaching panel needs a freshen up,maybe with a player just retired from another club, every other club does it.

It's no secret that there is a succession plan in place. Two years ago Longmire was odds favourite to get a job. This time round when there were 5 vacanices, he didn't even get a mention. It's pretty obvious. I can't see Roosy getting sacked. I think when the time is right for him and the club, he will walk away, whenever that may be.

i get the feeling roosy has no desire to rebuild the side, i wouldnt be surprised if he quit this year.

Id like to see us look around and not just take longmire, might be good to get fresh blood whenever roosy does quit or get the sack.

This is surely tongue in cheek. Say what you will about his coaching style, his dedication to the Swans can not be questioned.

ohh didnt mean he has no passion

meant more he seems very close to his players the ones he developed, and just the way he talks about trying to get a flag for kirky, hally, leo etc the guys whove been with him the whole time.

Also he talks of not being a career coach etc and succession plans, just thought maybe he doesnt want to start from scratch

i wouldnt question roosy as coach, a lot of fans seem to but i think roosy is a legend and would hate to see him stop coaching

Roos is in very little danger this year.

If Roos wants to he will be given the chance to rebuild the side if it falls of the pace. A proven premiership coach is rarer than they look and Roos would only start to come under threat if any rebuilding project were to stagnate. That will not be judged in 2008 so I Roos is safe for this year and probably next year as well.

Watching him today I would have to say he was as intense as he has been as a coach. For mine he had the eye of the tiger in him. Lets hope the loss of Malceski didn't dampen the fire too much.

He had that look of "here we go again" as in 2005.

Agree Roos would have to fail very badly this season to lose his job witch is not going to happen anytime soon
