News Future of Vic U18 Elite Pathways

oh comparatively nationally this is absolutely detrimental, in isolation within victoria not so much. I think regardless of changes or not, Vic boys were always going to have this later start, especially with ground allocations this time of year as well, girls and boys running concurrently was difficult to expect
You cant rob peter to pay paul though. The nab league boys should start training in december minimum and this should be corrected next year, yes give the girls a solid pathway aswell, but dont take that away from the boys - as at the end of the the best young athletes in australia choosing afl is what makes the league sustainable. Remember the summer training squads are usually 60 or so which gets cut down through the preseason, you cant start that process in february, its too late with only a few sessions and could mean a lot of boys fall through the cracks or not get a chance at all.

I just wonder if perhaps it might organically change the age kids are getting drafted, particularly those outside of the first round which are usually less speculatively. Clubs might be reluctant to take a risk drafting an 18yo kid with limited exposure, instead choose to pick a 19 or 20yo who is playing VFL.
Such a scenario benefits the top teams if it increases the depth of the first round, and finals teams are able to draft the top 19 year olds at the back end of the first round.

Basically recruiters having a whinge because they’ve been affected by covid cut backs.

You’d have to listen to the podcast as there was a bit more to it than that.
Something to do for tomorrow

He must have more respect for Rohan Connoly's ramblings on anything AFL than I do. ;)
idk, I find RoCo quite measured in his AFL takes and well meaning, there's more substance behind what he says than most other AFL pundits/ commentators

I was a bit taken aback by the their views of the NAB League, when one of them mentioned that it’s not really an elite competition, where winning is not the primary goal.

There was an interesting discussion on the QAFL board recently, where they were saying any junior competition should be about developing the kids to be the best footballers possible, and winning is secondary.

I think recruiters are concerned that a cut back on coaching within the NAB League Boys system could hamper development, as most NAB League clubs have coaches doubling up this season as Boys and Girls coaches, also with the cut back in games less unknown talent has a chance to impress.

for me in a selfish way, i dont have to watch those ordinary games mid season where half the squad goes to APS footy, so its not so bad, but i can see where the AFL clubs are coming from.

I think you may be greatly underestimating the situation here. There are definitely big rumblings within NAB League clubs.

Speaking to some people close enough they tell me it is now March and there are boys programs still running one session a week whilst Girls programs are in full swing. The way the AFL are treating the NAB League is a disgrace and it will jeopardise players. The boy's program is not 2-3 weeks behind the girls it is double that and add to that boys are only training once a week v the girls who are twice. Make no mistake, by now most programs would have final lists selected, be running structures and playing practice games preparing for elite competition. The NAB League this year is to be fragmented, stop-start and will not be conducive to allowing talented kids to be at their best.

How anyone feels you can have 1 head coach running 4 programs and providing the best opportunity and environment for these talented kids to improve ....it just is not possible. The coaches simply cannot stretch that far. Kids are training a local league clubs, where they are training twice a week whilst their NAB League training is still once a week. They need the local level footy training. The article is correct from what I have been told, AFL clubs are angry, list managers, heads of recruitment see what is really happening here. Scholarships will be required if you want to get drafted into the AFL.

Covid rules in Victoria continue to lessen, why are they not being freed here? Some of these rules appear to be more so for stage 3 lockdown than the actual current climate. I am very surprised the NAB themselves have not stepped in as their name will be tarnished along with the lowering standard of the league. The AFL has made an enormous error here.

Dig a little and you see there is a lot of good work being undone at this level.

Are the U18 not in full training yet... that is ludicrous? Why not...

Off the back of a covid year where these kids have missed vital development and would be a long way from match fitness the exact opposite should be happening. If as you are describing is happening and local clubs are going to be expected to do the bulk of the training and development, all this will do is push the more talented kids further towards the better resourced local clubs who have ex AFL coaches in place in there junior programs..

This says round 1 commences 27th of March, only 3 rounds announced so far but at least its a start. If clubs are not in full training 4 weeks out then they are going to be very under prepared.

Thats right, and it is very inconsistent across the league (where different clubs are at) I believe, clubs with high % of APS/AGS Players will be the ones most advanced right now I think,

NAB League testing is this weekend as well.

I've never followed the nab league closely before (I will be this year); but is it normal to only have 1 game on the first weekend. I notice round 1 is spread over 2 weeks.

Not sure why you would think that, the APS & AGS sides are in their summer sport season and most have not started training for winter. The only training most will be getting is with their senior clubs

It started with Paul Roos at Sydney who had an unofficial policy of only drafting kids from private schools because he believed that they were easier to coach and came with less ego than those from non private backgrounds.
Truly amazing.
