At this stage I think Fyfe is done for the year.

I have no idea how problematic breaking the same leg over can be in regards to playing elite level sport with a high degree of high impact.

Could this injury have the potential to end his career early?
From the interview sound like he got to be very careful with it.

I assume the club will go a full rehab and remove the plates, once bitten twice shy

I have had a plate in my collarbone - although I was cleared by the docs to play contact sport with it in there is no way I would want to and a hit to it would transmit all the force into the nearby bone whereas bone by itself has some give to it.

Should def. be fully rehabbed and removed before he plays again.

I prefer to be removed then, even it mean taking longer time.

Taking the plates out he might miss most of 2017 too , are you willing to do that ;). I am not.
?
I have broken 5 bones in my time. Standard recovery is 4 to 6 weeks. If you call it 6 weeks then it is only about 12 weeks from now before it should be fully healed after the plate is removed then he gradually builds fitness again. I am not saying we should play him again this year but no way he should not be ready to go for a full pre-season.

Yup before the above post I not sure how serious his injury was , now after reading his interview and your post I agree his long career is more important.

This seems to be what has happened;leg has smashed into the astroturf and the plate has acted almost as a fulcrum to transmit all the force of the impact to the adjacent bone.
Had the plate not been in place the bone may well have absorbed the force by flexing.

I too had a plate in my collar bone. I was cleared for contact sport and continued to play as I was told it would be fairly unlucky to break bones on either side of the plate. The issue was if i was to have it removed, as it would of meant further time on the sidelines due to screw holes that were left kept the bone fragile until they completely healed over. I suspect in Fyfes situation that he was unlucky to fracture his leg and now they won't take chances next time by removing the plate and completely healing the bone. He could easily play again this year if they just replated it.

If he comes back too early then yes, it certainly seems like it could.

As he mentions, the strength of the plated area results in weaker areas either side of it, clearly he can't keep coming back risking further breaks with this being the case.

Surely the club will rest him for the remainder of the Season now. Let it heal properly, get the plate out, come back with a Brownlow winning leg in 2017 :thumbsu:

yep, put him in cotton wool. get games into the all the kids. Pick 1 here we come.
Could actually be a blessing in disguise, Fyfe has been carrying the team for a couple of years, no one else wants to get their hands dirty when he's not out there. Make them realise someone else has to go and get the ball occasionally.

It's beneficial the fibula is hardly weight bearing, means he can run relatively early in the rehab process

Good move , with the plate remove toward end of the year.

Does this mean we can upgrade any players this year? Not sure how this works.
Good luck Nat with the recovery.

It sucks, but makes sense.

Heal up for 2017.

Fair understatement . Not at all surprising but seeing it made official still hurts. Fyfe only has so many years of his prime left to dazzle us and grow his legend and again an entire year has been snuffed out. Tbh I'm still having trouble dealing with it, every game he misses is a crime against footy :(
