Fyfe retires

We took him with our second rounder, Pick #20, in the 2009 draft.

Without looking, anyone remember who we took at pick 3? I didn't.
Mora at 4. Dustin Martin went at 3.

Sadly, Mora was a generational talent as well. Those damn knees.

Growing up in Tasmania where opportunities to see football are limited compared to everywhere else you hear these grand tales of players that others have seen live and they talk about them like superheroes. There was a game we played in 2019 in Launceston that we lost but it was the first time I'd ever seen a footy player look super-human, I remember everyone being shocked at Fyfe getting 3 votes for that game but for anyone at the ground it was so apparent how far above everyone else he was.

In 2021 he played his 200th down here and it was the first time we'd ever beaten the Hawks in Launceston; I'd seen that exact matchup at that ground for over a decade at that point and it felt like the perfect culmination. He's the greatest Docker in my book, will be inarguable when he gets the cup in a few weeks time

Fortunately Fyfe had a great career before injuries took their toll.

I'm still dark at Sam Mitchell. Am I misremembering, or did that grub with his corky obsession start the leg problems for Fyfe.

Old Man Good Job GIF

Like Sonny everybody knew this was coming but it still hurts.

One of the greatest footballers I’ve ever seen in his prime, weird to say what if about a two time Brownlow medallist but if it weren’t for all the injuries he could’ve been the GOAT. He sacrificed his body for this club and carried us through a very dark period, nobody would’ve blamed him if he left but he stayed loyal and I will always respect him for that.

Please get this man a premiership, no more club legends retiring without flags.

So many memories come to mind and so many more i haven't listed....

I'll never forget that goal against Geelong when he beat all 46 of them and snapped truly.

When he outmarked Mitchell in our elimination final against the Hawks in 2010.

When he schooled the more fancied GWS mids that day in 2019. Just bossed them all game.

When he picked us up and carried us on those shoulders for years when we were poo.

He's one of a kind, generational. Hurts to see him go. 💔

Win it for Fyfe boys. There's almost no player that deserves a premiership more than this bloke.

Absolute generational talent. Was one of the few players alongside buddy that when you looked at the team sheet as an opposition supporter would make you go “oh fk fyfes playing” especially in that 2014-2020 era would guarantee to absolutely tear us a new one. Even on the weekend came on as sub and along with your skipper won vital contests and in the end the game for not the first time in his career.

From an SA point of view is up there with the likes of Judd and Dusty in my eyes. Absolute champ of the game, the high flying magical things that made you sit up and want to watch freo games but at the same time the rough and tough of putting his body on the line for the jumper (and knocking a few oppo blokes out on the way). oh and he also retired kane cornes along the way too.

Absolute star, go well

Shortly after this game he does his shoulder, has the surgery, gets infected and lost a lot of weight and he was never the same after that.

To put his body what he put it through and still have the career he did is pretty remarkable. Of all the all time greats I don’t remember any having as many hurdles to overcome as Fyfe did. A great story of resilience and I hope we can end that story with a flag, it’s the only ending fitting.

Thanks mate for everything.
Keep yourself in shape for at least one more game:
Keep your legs in shape enough to come on as sub in the GF and kick the winning goal.
Keep your shoulders in shape enough to hold the cup high above your head.
LFG.

I remember watching the draft picks come up on my PC screen ( no live action coverage). It was reported that we were interested in him but when his name appeared next to our pick I exclaimed “ great another skinny half forward, the last thing we need”. In retrospect, I may have called that incorrectly.

No player and that includes Mundy, Sonny, David Rhys Jones, Dipper, Gary Gibellini, Steve Michael, Pav, Ballas, Dermie, the Buzz .... all my favourites of all time, have given me the footy viewing pleasure of Nathan Fyfe.

Thank you Nat. No one has sacrificed their own flesh and bones for this club as much as you. It will be standing room only at Optus this week and I think this announcement will be the difference between winning and losing.
