Cant exactly do a 1 or 2 year "lets see if we can get better for you Nat" contract can you. Especially after his injury. He will be wanting 5 or 6 and plenty will be willing to give him that on big money. So decision has to be based on 2017 considering how poor 2016 was.

Sorry for the intrusion. Wont stay long. If we take him at his word his next contract will be with a team in its premiership window. To be fair to Freo you have gone hard to trade your way to give him that with you. Also, many posters around believe that you guys tanked hard last season (me not included).

There would never be a better time to judge Freo than in end of this season. If you finish this season like a contender then you should have no problems in keeping Fyfe. When I say contender I mean WCE and above not NM and below as per 2016.

But if you finish where 99% of the ladder predictions I have seen have you (which is usually mid table) then he should leave if he is good to his word.

So my question to you guys is do you genuinely believe you are good enough to contend this year and therefore keep Fyfe to his word. Also should I pick him in my fantasy team - he is not exactly cheap but he is discounted.

I think you are being a bit black and white in your interpretation of something he said in one interview a while back.
Fyfe is a fairly nuanced speaker and to me it sounded like he was just saying he wanted to see some evidence the club was on the right track before committing to his next contract. I don't think that implies finishing in a certain spot on the ladder this year or else.
The footy dept are putting together a really good young group, I don't think our drafting and trading is based on simply keeping Fyfe. No doubt its a high priority but if we were going just for quick results we might have kept Barlow and one or 2 others. The policy has clearly been a rebuild with an emphasis on keeping out older quality and bringing the next generation through. We have a great age demographic now with the likes of Lachie Neale, Brad Hill, Harley Bennell, Hamling etc under our established stars like Sandi, Mundy, S Hill and some high quality youth like Weller, Tucker, Blakely and now Logue.
I'll be expecting to see some exciting and enthusiastic footy from Freo this year and that is what Fyfe will want to see. A promise of being up around the right end of the ladder for several years, not just a result this year.
Fyfe will captain the club and he will burn to lead us to our first flag. There isn't much Pav didn't achieve except the last tip of the mountain and Fyfe knows he will be an all time legend if he can pull off what our greatest ever couldn't.

All of us here that have followed Fyfe closely his whole football career so far know your interpretation of his quote isn't accurate. But even if it were, which other clubs, that are in a premiership window (your own words), could realistically afford Fyfe do you think?

I really dont know but I am sure many would make room for him. To me something like Tom Boyd + 1st round pick for Fyfe would make sense and then WB have room. Tippetts runs out soon. Hawks if they can stay in the top 8 could make room. I would like Crows to make a big play for him. I think we could make a solid offer for him. Geelong and GWS would be out you would think. WCE unthinkable. But Pies and Melbourne are building nicely.

I can't see Fyfe going to a team that has Chris Mayne in it. But even then they're a bit shit. They have like a forward and a couple of midfielders. I'm not even sure how they're fielding a defenders this year

Yeah. The pies strength is their midfield so not sure adding a midfield gun is going to fix their weaknesses. It depends on how their father-sons do. But you can't exclude them. Fyfe+Collingwood would be a mega brand and if he is thinking of his media career after then its a solid move.

No mention of needing to contend in 2017. Opposition supporters can dream, wish, read tea leaves or hypothesise but the odds are that the Freo #7 jumper will have Nat Fyfe in it in 2018.

I think that's right on the money. The guy is relentless in his pursuit of perfection in himself and no doubt in others. It's a strength and a weakness. Maybe the older guys at times felt like he lacked respect for them, but you can bet your life the younger guys love his passion and intensity. He is a Luke Hodge style leader who will drag the others along with him.

It doesn't seem to bode well from a team perspective and could potentially be part of the reason as to why Mundy got the Captaincy last year instead of Fyfe who, it should be noted, was an overwhelming favourite to take over from Pav at the time

Meh... The conjecture is all a joke and all based on footy fantasy rather than real world.

For someone who drives a couple of hundred kms back to the country home to help drive dads trucks, it's unlikely he'd move interstate.

For someone with a surfing passion, he's not going to live close to training for Melbourne teams and then drive 90 minutes to the surf. Maybe Geelong, or Gold Coast/Sydney. - for surfing, but that doesn't resolve the family connections.

He has a national brand, enhanced further if he picks up another Brownlow and/or captaincy. He doesn't need to move to create brand Fyfe. Where he is, just being him pictured surfing, flying helicopters, driving trucks and whatnot is probably his non footy media imagery - not hanging around in cafes and clubs in the inner city.

I don't believe so. Fyfe's personality type leads him towards obsessive preparation and recovery because he expects so much from/for himself. Dragging the squad along with that isn't a bad thing.

The challenge as I see it is preparing Nathan Fyfe for the reality that he won't get the effort from others that he demands of himself, specifically how he communicates his dissatisfaction in a way that doesn't put noses out of joint.

Dealing with athletes can make that last sentence a lot more literal.

The first scenario for Fyfe and Freo is if he has not signed on with Freo again by the end of this season he will be fielding offers from other clubs and Freo as well as we won't stop working on it until he either signs on again or accepts a rivals bid. He is a restricted free agent so Freo can match that bid and still retain his services.

The second scenario is that a new deal will be inked before the end of this season.

Provided Freo pay his market value he will be a one club player.

Nathan Buckley struggled with this during his playing career. Strangely it does not seem to be such an issue to Buckley as a coach.

I hope that Fyfey is maturing enough (appears to be the case) to deal with this and be the inspirational captain he is capable of being.

Nat Fyfe comes across as a smart young man who will realise that different people require different approaches to get the best out of them. Some people respond to a good old fashioned spray, some need a quite word of encouragement. Sometimes the best way to lead is to just do. A bloke like RTB will have seen this before (Brendon Goddard?) so I'm sure he will be providing the necessary guidance. I'm also sure blokes like Sonny and Ballas will give forthright feedback if it's required.

I remember watching the Dockers train when Chris Connolly was coach and being horrified at the lackadaisical approach to skill errors and the generally disorganised nature of proceedings. We've come a long way since then and anything that continues to drive an improvement in our standards is ok by me.
