How come when my dog died earlier this year it didn't make the news?

Actually he did make the news. The following article is true and is about my recently departed mate (dog ) My local council reminds me of the AFL.

.

Cable, the Maltese terrier cross on the driveway outside thehome of his owner ****** yesterday.

Have you been fined by an overzealous council? Contact reporter Jewel Topsfield on jtopsfield@theage.com.au

It seems the City of Yarra is not content to let sleeping dogs lie.

When Cable, a fluffy white Maltese terrier cross was photographed snoozing on the footpath in the afternoon sun, his North Fitzroy owners were slapped with a $153 fine.

A council officer caught Cable in flagrante delicto at 12.55pm on March 31.

The damning photograph of the dozing dog - his rump just centimetres from his owners' driveway - was sent with the fine. Cable's crime? "Dog at large or not securely confined to owner's premises during the day time," according to the infringement notice.

Cable's bemused owner, *******, said: "It had the time and the date like some big undercover surveillance job. It's like he's an escapee - 'We have the suspect, call SWAT'."

Mr ******* said Cable, a portly pooch aged about 70 in human terms, usually slept curled up in the driveway, but had obviously been tempted onto the footpath by a warm patch of concrete.

"Those extra 18 inches cost me $153," Mr *******said. "There is a bylaw where you have to have your dog leashed if it is outside your property, but that is just taking it to the extreme."

But the City of Yarra said it had received two complaints from Australia Post last month, claiming a postie had been bitten by a dog near Mr ******'s home. Yarra Mayor Kay Meadows said: "We were advised by Australia Post that their posties were prevented from delivering the mail in the entire street and were requested to act on the complaint."

The council said it had sent a warning letter before issuing the fine.

"I can understand that some people may think it is unreasonable or bureaucratic for council to be fining owners for having their dogs at large," Cr Meadows said.

"However, the council has a legal responsibility to act on all complaints and ensure that the instances of people, especially children, being threatened or bitten are minimised."

But Mr ******* said he had owned Cable for a decade and the dog had never bitten anyone.

"I'd be totally shocked... Cable doesn't even know how to bite his own food," he said.

"He's very, very friendly... everyone in the street knows him and stops to say hello to him. The woman around the corner gives him a bone every morning.

"If he supposedly bit a postman, surely we would have heard from the post office."

An Australia Post spokeswoman said a postman had been bitten by a dog on the street. He had required a tetanus injection. On previous occasions he had been chased.

But she was unable to contact the postman to confirm the identity of the dog.

Mr ******* said Australia Post may have the wrong dog.

He said he considered contesting the fine, but had decided to pay it. "I know what it's like (arguing) with bureaucrats - it's a waste of time," he said.

I especially like the way a woman in canberra can make an assessment that the car is written off from 100's of kms away. It took the insurance company a lot longer than that to write off my car.

As hard as he tries he just cannot escape the headlines. Is this a tribute to how good a player he was that he still commands public attention 10 years after his retirement or a reminder of the invasive and low quality work of football media?

Must've been a slow news day.

Unless the way to get into the news these days is to have a minor prang at an intersection? Sounds like the way to go!

So does that mean the car the woman was driving only copped minor damage, not written off, or is it refering to Snr's car only ?

Dunno, i was more pointing to the fact that the injuries were nowhere near as sever as reported, and as relayed by poor old mummy...:D

I think it was mentioned in the papers the next day that the mini-stroke was a crock.I'd be interested to know just how much damage her car copped. The damage to Snrs car didn't look to bad,so you'd think the impact wouldn't have been as hard as mummy made it seem.
