I haven't got the figures on me, but at a guess I'd say 45-50,000 were their today - not a bad attendance considering the crap in the first round.

While the GSS looked sparsely populated the Olympic, Ponsford and Members area looked pretty packed.

The MCG is very deceptive with crowds, its not like the TV studio where the AFL packs the crowd in to make a 30,000 crowd look like a sell out.

Deceptive or not, 45-50000 is not a decent turn out for 2 Melbourne teams on a perfect day on a public holiday.

If we got a crowd like that on a rainy saturday with another game at the dome I would consider it very disappointing.

Just for some food for thought, last weeks season opening Collingwood vs. Kangaroos game - 1977 reunion game, only drew 42,000 on an equally perfect Melbourne day.

It was 45,000 but I would still consider it a disappointing crowd.

Equally perfect day? It was cold and showers had been forcast. Today it was like 27 degrees.

Also it was a Kangaroos Home game and not a public holiday, and honestly Kangaroos is the worst drawing team in the league.

Easter Monday has rarely ever drawn massive crowds - its a different type of public holiday too ANZAC Day or Queens Birthday for example.

From a Hawk perspective watching on from the TV on a ****ty day in Brisbane, the Hawthorn portion of the crowd looked reasonable.

42,000 according to Sportal

Every year around ANZAC day we get the familiar bitching and moaning about Essendon and Collingwood keeping the blockbuster games for themselves and not sharing them with other clubs. It isnt fair when anyone else could fill the MCG just as easily on such a day.

Yet here we are, Easter Monday an two of Victorias great white hopes getting ready to set themselves up for a finals tilt and their combined fans cant even half fill the MCG. Is a disgrace and time this game was given to someone else. Dogs Vs Saints would be a good one. At least the Bombers and the Pies fans have the courtesy and passion to turn up and watch their teams play.

1) One of the clubs mentioned would have a larger match day attendence than todays two combined.
It is not as if the fixture pulled modest crowds then grew as the years went by.

2) ANZAC day can lob up anywhere in the week & would be lesser a working day for punters than Easter Monday. Some who may not be working could be on the way home from the best getaway outside of annual leave.

3) It is now a "tradition" and Essendon & Collingwood spawned it, they own it. I would by no means suggest that ANZAC day would be lesser of a day for our country if a football day was not played on it, but at the very least, for many, it enhances it.

Can you blame them?
I mean seriously who on earth would pay money to watch Hawthorn play?
How bloody boring.

Didi you see todays game? After last week I would agree but it was verey attractive to watch today..... have a look, Melb played good footy in 2 15 min patches as well.

43,000 today nimrod, plenty of Hawks.:thumbsu::thumbsu:

esp decent when considering it was 2 teams coming off crud performances, the last day of a long weekend and 27c.

Yep looks a pretty poor crowd, maybe 30k at a push.
Dogs v Aints maybe over 45k.
Lets face it though Essendon and Collingwood are far and away the biggest clubs in Victoria and the rest of 'us' can only dream to have the same levels of support.

Give it a rest with the AINTS call...3 years in the finals with no GF is not that bad.. port took years, lions took a couple, collingwood too (with no win tho) Or continue with the bagging and we'll see who laughs last when your mob moves the the gold coast, or better still, folds. Dogs saints games get 45k+ @ dome.. would get 60K+ at the G, easily on a pub hol

Whats with the thumbs up? Thats a pathetic crowd. Why are you so proud of 43000? As the thread started said, you couldn't even half fill the ground on a perfect day with no other games being played.

BTW, ANZAC Day 2004 only drew 55,000 surely at a ground with an 80,000 seat stadium with the occasion it could have drawn more then at best probably a mere 10,000 more then the Easter Monday game today between 15th and 16th.

Ah no.

The capacity was still 69k at the time and the game was sold out, they managed to release an extra thousand or so on game day as Grocon managed to finish a bay of seats at the top of the ponsford in time for the game.

The game had a poor turnout, however, this thread is pretty rich coming from an Essendon fan. There was barely any Essendon fans at the last MCG game against Hawthorn. Maybe its a Telstra Dome thing. I don't know.

We had more their that day than what you Tassie fans brought to the dome in the return game. ;)

The only hawk fans who showed could only fill up 1 bay behind the goals which was the cheer squad and that was pretty much it.

i would have loved to have been there today, looked like a great day for watching footy, whoever was playing

except north melbourne.

Rubbish. BTW I had a great time at "The James Hird Celebration" game.

Didn't hear a peep from the Essendon fans when it mattered.

We'll see you jokers in a couple of weeks time.

End of long weekend, people coming back from holidays, 27c day, 2 ordinary performances from both teams wouldn't have swayed many neutral supporters, let alone the fairweathers from Melb.

under the circumstances 45-50k was probably to be expected, far from pathetic.

Shows you how big the MCG is when 43k looks fairly empty there.

Well besides a couple of pom poms going up behind the goals while you were dominating the first half there was no sound at all from the few hawk fans.

Quite similar to the Dockers on Sunday ;)

Looking foward to it.

The rivalry is definitely building up again.

Was there for that one as part of my holiday plans. Saw a lot of Brown and Gold that night. Lots of vocal Hawks. Enjoyed the spectacle. :D Hopefully Round 6 will be just as good.

By your standards its ok I guess but plenty of other teams would have drawn 60,000+.

Today was a perfect day for footy.
