Haha....where was the 60K+ then? In any event people need to compare apples with apples. There are numerous occasions throughout the year when there is only one Melbourne game being played. Whether these games are on a public holiday or not is irrelevant. Are people more likely to attend a game because its labor day rather than Sunday afternoon? Do neutral supporters suddenly become interested in a game because its a public holiday? I don't think so. People go to the ANZAC day game because its an event. It is marketed as an event. Todays game isn't.

I'd be interested to see the crowds posted for the non ANZAC day Collingwood/Essendon games played since the inception of the clash.

Our 2nd game last year, we were 16th and it was a freezing cold night. 62k. Satisfied?

Last year there was a 30K difference between the ANZAC day clash and the return game. In 2005 it was 20K (only 50K to a Friday night game between these two giants). Difference due to neutrals not interested in the return game or because of the amount of casual Essendon/Collingwood fans who want to go to "ANZAC" day?

Kangas home game, lowest drawing team in the league, imperfect weather.

It would have been very close to 60 if it was a Collingwood home game.

Two decent drawing teams should easily get 55-60k. You got less than last weeks game and you weren't playing the worst supported team in the league.

For your game it wouldn't matter who's home game it was because both teams have similar supporter bases. It was definitely a factor in ours last week.

Bombers/Saints will get 60k+ in a couple of weeks ... oh wait, it's at Telstra Dome !!

Saints/Tigers always draws a good crowd ... around 50k.

If all the members turned up (say 25,000 each) plus the supporters who weren't members they should, repeat SHOULD get 60,000. No excuse for not going - perfect weather, start of the season, etc.

However, what are some reasons for not going? Unattractive style of football, both teams are not likely to be finalists this year, TOO BLOODY EXPENSIVE (cost my four teenage kids over $10 each to get into Telstra Dome Saturday night), etc.

I seem to recall when Essendon regularly played Carlton on Easter Monday (or Saturday or Sunday) it was always 75-80K (barring '93).

I'm not arguing whether two other teams could draw higher than Essendon/Collingwood on this day, I'm saying that you can't compare today's game to the ANZAC day clash. Anyway here's a thought - if today's game was played on ANZAC day, who's to say another 15K fairweather Hawthorn/Melbourne fans wouldn't attend together with 20K neutrals interesting in attending the event? Suddenly we've got 80K to the game. Interesting.

Today's crowd fell within the average of a normal Easter Monday clash...

By all reports on MH the crowd was 60% pro Hawthorn anyway, double that and its a 55,000+ fixture - higher then the previous 5 fixtures.

Like I said considering the negative build up to the game in the media, it drew an average Hawthorn/Melbourne crowd (middle to high 40,000's)

Hawthorn/Melbourne has had to cracks at the slot in the past 5 years (2002 and 2007) and drew 46,000 and 43,000.

Richmond/St.Kilda drew 40,000 to its games in 2005/6 at the MCG...

Today's game was between probably the 5th and 6th highest drawing Melbourne based clubs in a game promoted by some football experts to be the dullest game of the round.

FFS, Mitchell came out on Tuesday pleading with Hawthorn fans to give the side a second chance and turn up after their abysmal performance last Saturday Night - a performance that led to the football director walking out of the box and describing the game as sheer butchery from a Hawthorn perspective.

Also what seems to be forgotten is that games on Easter Monday 10-15 years ago were played before ANZAC day was formed as the marquee home and away fixture for the season - pre 1995. Before that, the Carlton/Essendon Easter Monday slot took its billing as the games most anticipated fixturing for the home and away season; nowadays it’s probably 4th or 5th behind the season opener, ANZAC Day, Queens Birthday and Carlton/Collingwood.

Hawthorn's next chance to draw a 50,000+ crowd comes in round 6 when we play the Bombers at the MCG - a game uniquely where both Essendon and Hawthorn fans can gain access to reserve seating.

If the form guide continues until that point and the weather holds up, I'd be disappointed if we didn't get 60,000+ to that game.

Essendon had not won a flag since 1993 and Carlton in 1995. Essendon didn't even make the finals in 1997.

Both matches drew 68K and 82K respectively with Essendon winning both matches by 1 and 7points.

Fair point, the point I was trying to make is that Easter Monday doesn't draw the large crowds it used too - you've only got to look at the last 5-6 years for proof. On top of that, Essendon vs. Carlton was just about the biggest rivalry in football back in the 1990's, I remember going to Ess-Carl games back in the late 1990's purely for the event.

In regards to the Carlton vs. Essendon game this weekend, if the weather holds up I wouldn't be surprised if a 65,000 crowd was in order.

Classic Grab: The big Easter Monday MCG crowd did not have to wait long for the mark of the day thanks to Boyle's beauty just eight minutes into the first term. The young Hawks' full-forward almost leapfrogged over the top of Melbourne's Nathan Carroll in pulling down the grab and capped it off with the opening goal of the game.

I think its vindictive of where the game is at that a 45,000 crowd is considered poor these days...
