Sallyanne Atkinson says she was wrong to oppose Victoria Park for Brisbane 2032 Games - Des Houghton
Former Brisbane lord mayor Sallyanne Atkinson has changed her mind. She now wants protesters to set aside their criticisms of Victoria Park as the site for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic stadium.
The woman I see as a living legend initially voiced her opposition to Victoria Park. Now she believes that opposition to the stadium is futile, and groups planning legal challenges are wasting time and money.
“If you continue to protest they won’t listen to you,” she said.
“I now accept that Victoria Park is the best place.
“Planning is under way, and you would be better off working with the authority to bring things out that you want, rather than protesting.
“So please don’t be blindsided by people protesting about one thing or another.”
Atkinson, 83, has some regrets about her original opposition to Victoria Park. “Unfortunately, what happens to people in public life is that they get asked a question and have to make a quick, and rather unconsidered response,” she said. “My original response was: Don’t touch parkland. On principle I was against losing any parkland. But when I thought about it and saw there was a lot of land there – enough for a stadium and wonderful parkland.
“At first I quite liked the idea of QEII being upgraded, but that got shouted down.
“I am also practical. I have always taken the view that if something is inevitable you just have to manage it.
“I learned that when I joined the protest against the Belle Vue Hotel demolition. It did no good. I remember pushing one of the children in a stroller.”
...
The former Telegraph and Courier-Mail journalist is unstoppable. She can’t contain her excitement about the Olympics and can’t wait to watch the stadium go up.
“It will be successful because the biggest sports are all together and the athletes can walk to the stadium and they can walk to the swimming pool from their village at the RNA.
“That to me is wonderful.”
