They will have to have something significant in mind because an 800-meter walk to a two-platform station would be a colossal, Godzilla-scale cluster****.

Having only two platforms is a major issue. 80k people in the middle of summer on a snakes and ladders trek to get to two platforms is crazytown. Would take you hours to get out.
Yeah, they won't do that. The stadium architects were saying in their interview that relying on a single mode of transport in one location, i.e. Exhibition station, isn't viable. Arup would be planning it so visitors have multiple locations around the park to leave the stadium to various transport options.

I guess my point was they DO shut down Main Street (briefly) immediately after Gabba games, and Main Street/IpswichRd is just as busy as BBRoad (it’s literally the same road anyway)
This is precisely the thing they need to avoid in that location.

Yeah but the massive majority of those have to be via train. The other modes are important, but they are supports; there is no way they have the capacity to deal with that many people.

Where's the nearest busway/metro stop? Obviously that's what they rely on for the Gabba now, so a combo of that plus Exhibition would be an upgrade.

Had a read through the 100 Day Review for what transport options they have listed for a Vic Park stadium. Blue: Rail. Red: Metro/Busway stations. Green: On street bus stops. They also suggest using pedestrian/cycling facilities through and around the park.

Sorry if mentioned earlier but can the existing exhibition station platforms be extended to cater for longer trains?
Or any room to add an extra platform either side?
So not a full rebuild as such but modifications?
I’ve never been in the area at all

I don't know if they can, but that's precisely the sort of stuff I'm sure they are thinking about. Ways to upgrade what is already there.

GIICA said in the 100 Day Review that Exhibition station may need upgrading to deal with the crowds. They didn't go into any detail though.

I can 100% imagine the walk down Gilchrist Ave to/from the station becoming a tradition.
I look forward to the Lions Roar game day marches from a pub in the Valley.

If they really really weren't going to build a new station, they could potentially get away with a loopback at the QUT busway stop to allow for city shuttles along with the upgraded Exhibition station. I can't see anything else they'd really be able to pull.

It would not be hard to have a transport upgrade when leaving the 36k capacity Gabba. The main bus station at the Gabba is closed for 1 hour after each game except for 2 routes that terminate there. Lots of City shuttle buses for that 1-hour period. Also, a lot of buses to outer shopping center locations at Chermside, Carindale, Garden City just so they can clear the area in an hour.

They LNP have their head in the sand if they think they don't need another purpose-built rail station. Why throw away money in upgrading a brand-new rail station that won't cope anyhow.
It is literally next to where the LNP are planning a 20k seat venue for SOMETHING not yet announced

Buses are always an option, but we really want to get away from them as much as possible. Gregory Terrace on the Pool side is quite a wide road and i suspect that gets used in some form or other.

The closest busway & metro stops are on the Inner Northern Busway and are adequate for now. The one at RBWH has a better capacity to handle a bigger crowd. That's because it caters for the biggest hospital in Australia. You won't want to push the capacity to much at that location in day games. RBWH is also a junction for buses coming from different parts of the CBD. So, more connections to more sections of the city via that stop.
However, even the RBWH has only 2 platforms. To be clear that's one platform each direction.

All the 3 Inner Northern Busway stops are marked in red below.
Upper Gregory Terrace is not really on the bus lines to the CBD. Most buses go via Fortitude Valley or the Inner Northern Busway.

they should just split the train traffic. Exhibition station only services northwards bound customers - I assume will need some track work for this to work? A new VIC Park station near the ibis island/tennis courts to service those only for southbound.

If funding permits a massive expansion of the current vic park car park area with ride share, kiss and drop and bus connectivity.

Place the stadium roughly in the middle of all three. Sure a shit walk still but it spreads the foot traffic immensely.

I want Moreton bay figs though.

All the golf facilities there are closing midyear apparently because GIICA wants the BCC land it sits on for the stadium.

There was meant to be an official date when they'd close by COB according to 7 News just now, one has not been provided to them. GIICA reportedly told the company in October last year their land would be required for earthworks to begin mid this year.

Thanks for sharing that.

I'd strongly contest that Fortitude Valley and Roma Street stations are "within walking distance".

I don't think the (more than) half hour walk to either of those stations (or Central, for that matter) is reasonable. I mean, it wouldn't be a problem for me but not everybody will be happy to walk for over an hour (round trip) on top of getting public transport. Particularly at night, and that's before you even start to think about the terrain involved here - it's hardly flat!

They will have to either improve Exhibition Station and/or somehow shorten and flatten the walkways to the stations mentioned.

Any transport plan which involves the predominant use of buses is laughable, and will be seen to be disastrous in the fullness of time.

...And to be clear, I’m not saying it’s going to be a disaster. Just that they are going to do some clever stuff to prevent it from being a disaster. Which I’m sure they will.

Maybe we should cancel the Olympics
