Might explain the trade.
1. Not even Melbourne are silly enough to trade Oliver, Petracca, Viney or Brayshaw for Gaff. They are the backbone of this side.
2. 2nd tier mids at Melbourne are a bit of a weakness. It's Harmes, Salem (hbf), Fritsch, ANB (hff), Dom Tyson, Maynard, JKH, Spargo (hff). None of those guys make a lot of sense. Eagles don't need Tyson, or if they do I doubt he's enough to move the needle. Harmes, Salem and Fritsch are almost more value to Melbourne than Gaff, we'd have to replace them if they left. Not sure they'd want most of the others. Oskar Baker in the VFL is a decent prospect but he's from QLD, can't see why he'd be keen to fly West or why the Eagles would particularly value him.
The tip around pre draft was that the Eagles were very keen on Fritsch but he's exactly the wrong type of player to trade out!
Dean Kent - I still like him, but sure, the Eagles can have him for nothing but he wasn't going to cost much to begin with.
3. 1.2 million for 5 years. Pretty much bars you from getting the next guy after Gaff. I don't see paying that and giving up a valued player as well. Maybe I'd pay that much to get Gaff for free and then off load a player but that's not really a side trade.
4. Side deals - the AFL are not going to take kindly to this. They want teams to match and trade free agents or to let the deals go through clean. If Melbourne gifted a good player for cents on the dollar the AFL would be upset.

Gaff is maybe the most overrated footballer around. Just because he's the best Eagles midfielder doesn't mean he would be anywhere else. It's their low point and has been for years. Bloke is a cap drain and as much as the Dees want to * up with that bonehead coach, they would seriously never give up any half-average player for him.

But ultimately he was moving back home, and he didn't want to be the guy that stuffed up the huge Judd trade.
Gaff isn't Judd, and Petracca's got nothing linking him here.

Mate this person sees the quality of the freo mids week in week out. He knows who is good and who is overrated. Neale with that tremendous ball use. Walters floppin around anytime anyone comes with a metre of him and the best of em stephen hill....the run...so explosive

Good call. Goodwin was implicated in that saga at Essendon, and if Melbourne were serious they would have chosen another coach. Goodwin doesn't pass the character test and isn't a great coach. So good call Silent Alarm.
