No they really, really didn't. If they wanted it to be a twist we wouldn't have had the scenes in the Vale where LF convinces Robin to call his banners, we wouldn't have Sansa turn down their help, we wouldn't have discussions between her and Brienne about not telling Jon and we sure as hell wouldn't have seen Sansa send that raven after the Northern Houses rejected her call for help.

A twist is Tywin Lannister showing up out of nowhere with the Tyrell army at his side to win the Battle of Blackwater with virtually no onscreen development of this story line.

The problem lies with the plot. The whole thing was telegraphed a mile out. Was there a single viewer anywhere who didn't expect to see Littlefinger come riding to the rescue, when all appeared to be lost? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Didn't think so. The whole Riders of Rohan moment was obvious weeks ago, as soon as we knew this battle was coming, after Sansa met Littlefinger in the barn.

Similarly, is there anyone who didn't think the Masters' fleet was doomed as soon as Dany returned to Mereen with Drogon in tow? Wooden ships & dragons do not mix, and it's very rare that the contest will favour the maritime forces. Once again, telegraphed and obvious.
I dunno, I just don't see those things as issues - not everything has to be a twist or revelation, occasionally things play out exactly as you'd expect. If there was a twist at every big moment the show would get silly pretty quickly.

I keep thinking about that moment between when Rickon died and Jon decided to charge.

If he turned tail and went back to his battlements, would that have affected his troops morale? How was he going to goad Ramsay into charging now with the whole Bolton army laughing at him?

I think he realised he stuffed up and just went "in for a penny, in for a pound" and had to Leroy Jenkins it.
Excellent point, hadn't considered that.

There might not have been technically any twists but as someone mentioned earlier there were a few times when I thought Jon was a goner.

Especially right at the start, I thought he was going to die at the hands of the charging cavalry - dropping his belt to the ground and facing them with his sword appeared symbolic of a last stand, and with Sansa still at the back to lead the Stark rebellion it seemed very possible the battle could kick off with Jon dying without it necessarily meaning the war was lost.
Yep same. Was thinking how game of thrones would it be to bring him back from the dead only to kill him off for good a few eps later.

I'm going to address the elephant in the room. Obviously we keep hearing that time isn't linear on GoT, but where were the weather conditions?
I thought the whole premise of Stannis going up against Ramsay under prepared was to beat the impending arrival of winter. I thought winter was already here now that the white walkers were gaining power. So how did this battle take place in the middle of a Dornish summer?
I guess I'm just wondering where the snow was at, & I don't mean Jon I mean the 10ft deep stuff that broke Theon & Sansa's fall at the same place a few eps back.
I'm assuming the Shireen sacrifice worked.

Didn't Bran tell Sam not to tell Jon?
Apparently only in the books, in the show Sam tells Jon.

"Well in the show Sam Does tells Jon about meeting Bran here in the scene from S04E04 at around 35:45 minutes..... where they discuss about sam.

In the books However.....

''Bran, Jojen and Coldhands all extract a promise from Samwell that he will tell no one that they are alive. Samwell reluctantly agrees, even keeping the secret from Jon Snow, his sworn brother of the Night's Watch and Bran's half-brother''

I loved that part, his whole army saw their commander standing ready to face the entire opposition by himself - so they put their foot down to get there in time.

I would enjoy a scene later in the show when that moment is being spoken of by his men, how he stood out the front and took them on himself unlike the other coward lords who watch from the back. That is the sort of story to rally the common man behind him.

Hey I didn't see it coming. I didn't even know Littlefinger had pledged his troops... I must have missed that bit or simply forgotten. Which episode did he say he would anyway? I'll rewatch it.

The scene in the barn where Sansa said she could order Brienne to cut him down, the scene where Sansa hints at the horrors Ramsay inflicted on her that she can still feel.

Oh I think I kind of remember that, she got really mad at him because he didn't protect her. I don't remember him saying he'd send troops to join the battle though. Will have to rewatch, do you recall which episode that's from?

An early one. Probably the second episode.

Edit: nevermind, was way off.
