Lots of warnings to characters not able to fight to go to the crypts. White walkers are able to raise the dead. Am I the only one considering the idea that those that are buried in the crypts might be raised? If this happens, will Jon be forced to kill his mother as a white?
I can't see how they would be able to break out of the crypts to be honest.

They are normally sealed rather tight.

How was that a twist? They spent half the season showing us Qyburn making the stuff.
Yes, to build anticipation about what it would be used for. From memory, not one person in this thread picked that she was going to blow up the sept with Margery and co. inside. And even if a few people did, it wasn't widely anticipated or discussed like L + R = J.

Unexpected. Game changing. Shocking. Text book definition of a twist.

Whether you like a twist is subjective. Twists dont automatically mean good. Twists can also ruin shows if done poorly or are poor story developments regardless of whether they are unexpected and game changing.
You said there were no twists.

I could imagine some people on here trying to argue the Red Wedding wasn't a twist if it came post-books.

What? The Boltons have always been evil, they have a flayed man on their banner ffs! And Rob betrayed Frey by not marrying his daughter, he should have expected revenge was coming. It was so obvious if you look at all the signs.

Have seen this posted a bit (the writers haven't produced any twists since passing the books) and it makes no sense to me at all. Seeing as its an adaption of source material, isn't every major twist that happens in the show lifted straight from the books? Including from books that haven't been written/released yet? GRRM gave the show runners the low down on the major plot points and how things pan out - kinda makes it hard to infuse anything meaningful, shocking and plot-related that isn't in the books.

I'd say of course there have been twists since passing the books - Bomberboyokay 's example of an undead dragon for example. I'd also say that it happened in the show because they were told by GRRM it will be in the books.
^^This. It's all been mapped out to the showrunners by Martin, there was an article posted in here awhile back that said

that there were 3 'holy shit' moments to come when he spoke to them. One was Hodor, one was Jon's true parentage, and the other is yet to happen.

Definition of twist changes to whatever suits you. Reminds me of someone on the NFL board saying it's not a fumble when you're stripped of the ball.

Just with the raising of the dead in the crypts. Two things:
1) the crypts themselves are heavy stone, and unlikely to be just popped open
2) the bodies inside wouldn't have weapons to speak of, so how much damage can they really do?

I've enjoyed the first couple of episodes, as it's really just a couple of sets before the inevidable spike coming this week. If I was one of Theon, Brienne or Gentry I would be worried. They've been personalised and opened themselves up to get slayed in the battle next week.

Maybe the last big twist is the Night King is marching down not for conquest or a wife but to put the seasons back to normal. He needs to be in the south for the potion/spell (Jon or someone will assume it's a bomb) to work. Eyes close and he dissolves as King's Landing turns into a spring day. Only person old enough to remember how it was.

I get what you're saying, but you can see where it comes from in this specific case as you have people;

- lamenting the lack of twists in the show since it passed the books, despite there clearly being twists present
- bagging the show runners for not having more or bigger ones, despite them getting their info concerning such things directly from GRRM himself
- saying there won't be another twist the size/impact of the red wedding in the show, even though there obviously won't be one in the future books either

I reckon the books are clearly superior to the show FWIW. But the bagging of the show runners for things that are actually GRRM's responsibility is a little tedious.
I agree with all your points except I think the show runners have more control over the script. They go to GRRM but the show runners are the ones making the final decisions so the credit/blame goes to them.

I also appreciate that it’s hard to come up with shocking twists when the biggest have basically been killing off the main character.

Come on now. The whole GoT world has shrunk to essentially two places now and only a handful of characters. Think of it like a funnel and we're now near the bottom nearing the end. There's not the wriggle room there once was for twists and political intrigue on a grand scale.

Do you ever wonder why the great GR Martin himself can't finish the books???
For mine I think they started to funnel too early.

So before the battle next episode, which characters have essentially completed their character arc? Two main ones stand out:
  • Brianne: She has always dreamt of being a knight, having her valor and fighting ability recognised. She has also completed her oath to Catelyn in protecting Sansa and Arya to the best of her ability. This episode I thin her arc ended so I fear for her next episode.
  • Theon: He has come full circle and is back at Winterfell and attempting to repay the Starks and regain his honour. Nothing more for him to do other than die honourably. Has put his hand up to protect Bran and will likely die doing so.

Next episode is going to be 82 minutes long... I know we all know already but this is going to mass slaughter. I can't wait for the battle and I am of the view they've set it up perfectly.
Source? People were giving long numbers for episodes 1 and 2 which turned out to be total bullshit.

Great post!

Brienne. Has she really protected S and A when the dead are on the doorstop? In terms of they can still die.
Theon. like your theory a lot. He's ready to go.

As far as battle tactics

Jorah Mormont.

I get the feeling that after his talk with Little Bear and Sam giving him his family sword he's going to go down valiantly.

Bring him back in from the outer with the Mormont family and go from a zero to a hero in the families history.

Although if Little Bear and the 62 die there's no Mormont Army left.
