Opinion Game plan changes for 2013

kersten is SJ size. SJ just plays his game a bit oddly so its a strange comparison. he is that medium marking forward like Gunston is being at the Hawks at present, and like we hoped Gamble would be a few years ago.

I think a HFF for him, a FP for Menzel, a FP for Chapman and the other flank can be raffled off between stokes, SJ, Varcoe, Christensen, Motlop etc. who can all go through the midfield.

Not saying for the whole season, but i think you can fit him in with that sort of line up without dropping Pod or Hawk and see how he goes for a few games, especially against weak defences like GC or GWS so he gets a bit of experience.

To those that think Kersten will get a good run next year: which two player from this year's forward line won't be in the side next year, assuming Menzel is back and fit too?

I don't think it's two players getting dropped per se, like this year I wouldn't mind betting Scott will rotate some players in and out of the side. For instance I doubt very much that Chapman will play every game. You would think if we could get 20 games and 30 goals out of him that would be a fantastic return. Menzel will be back but also no doubt will take time to find his feet again at senior level. You're right, because you can't fit all of Chapman, Menzel, Smedts, Motlop and Stokes all in the team. Plus Brown and Kersten, as well as Hawkins and Pods. Going to be an interesting year.

A few random points to be addressed.

What the hell happened to our disposal this year? How many grubbers and fumbles did we do? Need a better way to pass it.

Also we are becoming Hawkins centric. Need more midfielders to kick goals that was our strength before. Missing, Vacroe, Menzel and SJ to the midfield is too much firepower missing. So bombing it in hoping for Hawkins isn't a valid tactic, I mean look at Saints and Pies.. they do the same this year and struggle..2-3 goals a game from Hawk is fine.. rest needs to be spread among the players...

Remember the days we have 10+ individual goal kickers? We used to find free people in the fwd 50 like Hawks do now.. this has gone long gone....

Another one.. Disicpline! We gave away guaranteed goals in every game.. you know why? We gave away stupid 50s.. from round 1 all the way to the Finals! WTF!!!!

1 Last thing... Please play a guy further back when we press up.. how many times is either A) a Vacant goal square and they kick it from 50 and it casually rolls through and B) a player beats our defenders in a footrace from the other end inside the 50, picks up the lose ball and runs into an open goal!

/end rant

P.S did not smash any team by more the 65 which was GWS... please bring back the old 100+ points beltings!

what we need to do is not try and dispose of the ball, that is the tactic these days. Pick it up, wait for the tackle, then drop it and keep doing that until someone can clear it out.

Where we have gone wrong is disposing of the ball under pressure, which leads to a turn over. Our opposition dont try and get a handpass or kick away they just drop it when tackled so they or a team mate can pick it up again and get the clearance as holding the ball doesn't exist any more....
Ross Lyon tactic numero uno...
I noticed Freo players doing out in EXACTLY the way Saints did a couple of years back. Umpires need to call it.

The players we missed most last week were Menzel, Varcoe, SJ and Wojinski.
All players who either though pace or sheer brilliance, make the unexpected happen. Our EF team was shown up for flair and run early. Clearly Wojo is out of the picture, but SJ was a massive loss up forward and in the MF.
I see Menzel and SJ virtually rotating with each other next year with SJ maybe spending 60% in the MF, Menzel 25-30%.
Varcoe will be on the wing/HFF breaking lines with Guthrie and T. Hunt pushing back then breaking forward.
The game plan is sound imo. It stood up to all the main contenders but we were blind-sided by the Freo press. As we have seen in the past, those game plans get figured out very quickly and become ineffective.

Until another very good mid comes into the side - or Duncan, THunt and / or Bundy excel in the midfield - SJ will be predominantly a mid player. We need him to pick up 25 plus possessions and add some bite to the midfield - especially with our ruck situation not being that good at present.
