Sometimes I wonder if we have just drafted really dumb players. Now I say this because of the dumb shit that just keeps happening year in and year out. The dumb zone stuff has had me scratching my head with disbelief for over 10 years. We are on our 5th coach in that time and you can still se various examples every week. The coaches and the list have turned over in time but the same shit keeps happening. It is almost like one of our questions pre draft is "what is your IQ " if it is over 100 we do not select them.

Hopefully last night gave you a better indication of the way we want to move the ball ant555?

Just need to tidy up and polish up how we finish inside 50 and we’ll be ok I think.

It was not all that different to what we tried to do last year other than we turned the ball over less and the "team" defense stood up. I went to the game and watched from the top level behind the goals. I was 80% happy with how we defended the whole ground. One thing that stood out for me was how much better we controlled the game having a few blokes who could mark the footy. Hell we even had a few kick ins where we actually marked the ball and did not just concede another inside 50.

We appear to have a gameplan now

Having Jones with sticky mitts really helps with that

The first 5-10mins of the game wasn’t good.

Our defence was like Swiss cheese and reminiscent of a Matthew Knights type philosophy of push forward in a chaotic manner through the middle and then get burned on the snap back when the ball rebounded from a turnover.

It was unbelievably promising to see the team tighten that up after those initial 5-10mins though and not allow the ball to transfer from our attack to their attack without resistance.

I disagree with the first 5 to 10 minutes. Yes Geelong got 2 easy goals including the the first but it was not as bad as it looked.

Hit outs 41 to 12

I think by memory we had 35 to 15 or something inside 50s at halftime

Amazing what an effective ruckman can do for a team.

Caldwell is a welcome injection of pace and quick hands around the stoppages and centre bounces
To be fair we were rucking against a kid and a mostly worn out Josh Jenkins. Draper won't get his way like that in many games this year.

The points per possession over that period of time would negate how it might have looked to your eyes.

Review the stats: How many possessions it took for them to score Vs how many possessions it took for us to score over that period of time.

They were able to move the ball freely and dissected our defence without resistance.

Heck, just look at the time of possession over that period of time. That stat alone tells you what it looked like to you was not representative of what actually happened.

Look at how they scored the two goals in that period.
We had the first inside 50 but it went to Geelong.
First goal was a direct result of a missed spoil from Francis and the ball getting out the back. It was not a result of the team defense being bad. In fact it came from a slow down the line kick to a contested play from Dangerfield.
In the next 3 minutes we have the ball and the inside 50 4 times for 1 behind and two direct turnovers.
The next Geelong goal was a result of a mistake from the defenders with both Stewart and Ridley being at the contest allowing Hawkins to be inside 50 by himself.
I have reviewed the stats and watched the replay twice to go with my recollection of what I saw live. The two early Geelong goals where a direct result of a couple of individual errors and not because our team defense . The points per possession where skewed because we missed 4 times in the same period with a couple of those shots not scoring.
Time is possession was also misleading as we held them up at half back.
I always base my views based on game review and stats. Reading champion data stats is not the be all and end all.
If you want me to give you a ball by ball description I can.

I will clarify what I meant when I said the game plan was not all that different as you can look at last year and last night and they certainly would look totally different.
How we played last night was not all that different to the second half of the Hawks game and periods of the early games last year. Forward running handball through the middle mixed with shorter kicks on the 45 or forward before going longish inside 50. That is still the basis. The biggest difference was the fact that we defended well as a team for much longer periods across 4 quarters. Second to that there where less midfield turnovers. The basics of our game plan is there and has been there to see in patches last year but like any game plan if you do not defend well as a team then it unwinds and you look really bad.
The next part is how much you can control the game if you can mark the ball. Last year against Geelong they simply out marked us all night through the middle . A great percentage of kicks coming out of out back half where marked by them. Saturday night we had Draper , Jones , Wright , Cox , Ridley all combine to take 10 or so marks from kicks coming out of defense in the mid zone of the ground.
We will have to have the same level of team defense to make things work week in and week out. That will be the key to getting the game plan how we want it.

Should also add the work rate of the players to get into space was very good. There will be games that will get congested and we will have to rely on marks down the line but lets hope that work rate does not drop off too often.

But thats still a major problem isn't it? And hast been fixed yet as far as I can see. At this level this long held shortcoming will get exposed again more often then not. We have some kids in years to come that could but until then I think this team will be aiming for 50/50 contests out of bounds on the wings.

It was one game re the Cats game, but the game plan seemed more organised and have more cohesion. There was better spacing and thought going in to being in the right spots at the right time. The build up to our first goal for instance was terrific. And we seemed to hold Geelong up re their ball movement well at times. Time will tell if there is meaningful improvement and we dont have the cattle to make the 8 or more to the point, the experience into the cattle to develop them yet. But going to be interesting to see how we develop.

Not totally fixed but Saturday night the combination of Draper , Jones , Wright , Ridley , Heppell and Cox gave us a lot of relief in that area compared to previously. If that can combo can provide 15 marks it works.

Wait, you're not suggesting our game plan from kick ins is to retain possession of the ball are you?

I know it sounds hard to believe but we actually marked a few kick ins last week. In fact we most likely marked more last week than we did last year.

You know what is comforting.
The thought of two options in Ridley or Reid taking the kick ins. The other being outfield along with the mits of Draper, Jones, Cox and Langford to kick to.

This is also where i wish Francis would come on this year as stronger marking player.

Francis hit up Ridley once during the game coming out of the back half. A few more of those would nice.

About half way through Q2 Francis sent a bullet on to the chest of Langford who goaled.

He’s a fantastic user, with a bit of pressure on the ball having him sit in the quarterback role a kick behind play that Goddard used to do, he’s lethal.

Could well happen. If sides get a decent amount of run from the new man on the mark rule then coaches will look at 7 man defense.
