Quarter by quarter review:

First quarter report done by nickgrant69:
Overall a pleasing quarter for the dees
The teams transition from the back half was excellent aided by poor fwd pressure from the power, almost a signature of our season when we are able to run in out easily we score heavily

Are kicking efficency around the ground was good and there was plenty of run from behind
The team looked far more dangerous with petterd and maric crumbing as opposed to the usually oversized fwd half we go in with
the fwd pressure was also impressive

Notes on specific players, nath jones started forward and did some good things including a nice goal and green played mainly on ball
jack trengove imo was melbs hardest worker this kid oozes class, tapscott slotted straight back in nicely giving us another good kick, and petterds kick up the ass has really shone through as he is gettin back towards career best form

Stef martin continues to be really impressive and smart with the footy, Lj was attacking it in the air

the negatives were garland was really loose almost zoning and let his opponent get some easy uncontested footy, and tom scully on occasions looked seriously disinterested ... howe as the sub confused me

second quarter:

By High Flying Flag

After a first quarter where the boys didn't take their chances against what looked like a lazy Port, there were concerns that the heat was getting to them already. Primus was clearly frustrated, but it looked as if the Port players were setting themselves up for a big end to the game, looking to storm home at the end. Up by about 4 goals at the start, we began to turn it over consistently with Jordan Gysberts an unfortunate case as he spilt it again and again. The heat was getting to him, as it was to Jones, Watts and McKenzie who were missing in action Jamie Bennell style. We lacked run, although Sylvia had his own wing and was consistent in setting up chances, and Jack Trengove didn't stop running and looked worse for wear half time. The cool room became a haven for the players as Port kicked back, coming within 14 points as the likes of Pearce and Hartlett displayed their class. Luke Tapscott got a lot of the ball for us but was just a bit rusty in disposal and Liam Jurrah still looked out of touch, but after an embarassing first quarter miss, he lifted to kick a few. Maric bobbed up when needed while Jamar consistently gave Lobbe a lesson in the ruck.

Need to: Improve Run, Use the Break

Must Improve: Watts, Gysberts, Jones, McKenzie, Garland

Third quarter review:

CowboyFromHell:

I wasn’t sure what to make of the first half. On one hand we played some very good football, especially through the corridor, yet on the other hand we turned the ball over a bit and gifted Port some goals to keep them in the contest. I was quietly confident we could push on in the third term but Port have shown they can play some good football up in Darwin so I was still a little worried. Here is what I enjoyed in the third term:

Good:
- We DID kick on in the third term, even if it took a little bit of time to accomplish. One thing that has impressed me about our side this year is that when we take a few risks and move the ball quickly we look like a fantastic side. When we play like this you can see what Bailey is trying to achieve with this team. When it works, it WORKS. We kicked 3-4 goals in the space of around 10 minutes that pretty much killed the game as a contest, although I reserve the right to retract that statement if we have a last quarter like we did last year.
- The third term, for me, showcased how good our backline is going to be. I’ll talk about Chip in a moment but out three small backmen were all terrific. I know we have Jack Grimes to eventually return but Tapscott, Nicholson and Strauss hold us in very good stead down there for the future. All 3 showed the ability to not only find and dispose of the ball well but also provide a good one on one contest. I know they still turn it over occasionally but that’s to be expected.
- Frawley is a gun. Murdered Shulz in that term and, with Garland and Rivers, makes a formidable tall back three.
- Ricky Petterd showed some real class playing as a high half forward. Knows how to find the footy and used it well.
- Some of our senior players really stood up for us during the third term. Moloney, Sylvia and Green in particular got their hands on the ball and had an impact which was crucial to us taking what looks to be an unassailable lead.
- I LOVE Stef Martin. I think his third term was fantastic and he just gives us such a great alternative to Jamar as he does things a little differently. He may not be as tall but he is athletic and can take marks. Not only that but he can find the footy as well. For small parts of the term he also spent time down back and down forward, further proof of his versatility.
- It was also good to see Maric kick his third and put a bit of forward pressure on. If he could do that every week then he would keep his spot in the side. There is a spot there for a small crumbing forward and his name is written all over it... in pencil. He needs to cement it in pen.
It was a good term of footy and a term we needed to have against a side we should be beating.

Bad:
- Turnovers in our back half. We still make them and we still allow teams like Port to have a sniff. We did it a few times, particularly early in the term, where we were just overwhelmed a little and we didn’t dispose of the ball well which resulted in Port Adelaide goals.
- Centre clearances. Port had plenty of these and, while we get first hand to the hit out, they just seemed to want it more.
- Cale Morton. Enough said.
- Cameron Hitchcock. I hate this prick, a try hard tip rate who loves himself a bit. The fact he played at all goes in to the bad category.

Overall I thought the third term was the term we NEEDED to have. After allowing Port to stay within arms reach we did what we should have been doing, and that’s play attacking football through the corridor to give our forwards the opportunity to kick us in to a winning margin. We still need to use the ball better from deep in defence, from both marks and kick ins from behinds, but we played the style of football that we know we are capable of. A very good third term from the Dees.

Third quarter review by Bond:

Q3:
Jurrah the only player not sweating, because he is “in his natural habitat.” Luke Darcy, you are a w***er and I hate you.
So we are 20 points up, the commentators try to talk up the Rabble but surely we aren’t losing this one. Good chance for the lads to pump in a good quarter and put it beyond doubt.
Petterd delivers a beautiful blind turn, and hits up Jurrah like a ho. Jurrah ****s up, sends it to Watts and the pill goes out. This passage made me chub up. It is all about the x-factor!
Ten have not exactly brought their A team, with Lane, Darcy, Chrisitan and Underwood. Yuck.
The Rabble act all rabble like in their forward 50 twice in a minute, and we get away with what should have been a couple of goals.
I am really hating the commentators. Stop pumping up Port, they have no heart. They are not coming back. You should be spraying them for being a pathetic club.
Port’s Trengove looks like a few pieces of meat arranged into vaguely human form.
Scully, Maric, Sylvia, Watts, Gysberts, goal. Wet dreams are made of this, who am I to disagree? I travelled the world and the seven seas, everybody, looking for something…
Sweat turns our pink v into a red v.
When Port goal, they get pumped up for being in it, looking fresher than Melbourne, etc, etc. Melbourne goal, and Darcey bags Sylvia’s handball. **** off, surely Darcy won’t get employed next year. He is the worst.
Petterd spins again. LIKE A HO MOTHER****ERS!
Sylvia slots his standard awesomesauce running goal from 45. Good shit Col, he is looking a lot fresher after the bye.
Port have done very well with their jumpers, especially considering the white, teal and Soaring Securities logo handicaps.
Half way through Q3 and I want Trengove to lift and deliver a searching run. I would do unspeakable things if this guy wanted me to.
Scully takes a nice grab and hits up Green. Don’t you dare go to GWS.
Green marks, kicks, goals. Twice. Bad for my dream team, looks like I am going to lose this week.
After Green’s first goal, Christian and Darcy shut the **** up. Yeah that’s right, Port aren’t going to win. I hope I will never hear these buffoons again.
Morton tries to unleash a bomb and gets smothered. Seen that before. That wind up is too big.
Trengove goes long to Sylvia, who cuts through the middle. It looked exciting, but his kick let him down.
Lane points out that Frawley has smashed Schulz, but that was to be expected. It is like Superman defending a piece of constipated shit.
Lots of Demon players in red boots tonight. I remember the Reverend making the Wiz change his red boots back in the day. How times have changed.
Petterd slots his third and gets some love from the commentators. I love his work.
10 goal win is on here.

Fourth Quarter:

By The puppet master

Ah, how I wish I had gotten in early and been able to review the 'premiership quarter'.

Anyway here is my take on the fourth.

We entered the 3/4 time break with a very comforting 39 point lead, controlling the play after a brief Port resurgence.

The players were obviously spent, on both sides, and this was made all the more obvious by the way the game opened up in the last quarter. There was a distinct lack of defensive running from either team, the odds were that if you created a turnover off half back you would be able to rebound quickly and effectively.

Although at 28 degrees and 70%+ humidity I can't blame the players.

Anyway back to the game.

I'll start off with a brief summary of what I thought was the turning point in this quarter.

It was early in the third quarter and Port had just kicked four goals in quick succession (courtesy of Cornes, Cassisi, Hartlett and Banner), much to the joy of my non-Melbourne supporting mates (the ****'s). From my point of view our presence in the clearance department was lacking, when we weren't getting first hands on the ball it seemed Port had time and space to clear the ball to great effect.

It was all one way traffic. We rebounded the ball and Sylvia (iirc) sent it long inside our forward 50, Port were defending deep and intercepted easily... the ball went out to Hartlett on the back flank... who promptly ****ed the kick, gave us a free kick, goal and a lifeline. The ball was delivered to Martin, who finished and virtually secured our victory.

After that we played the percentages, if a ball was there to be contested we would find a way to get it to the boundary, if a tackle had to be made there would be 2-3 of us around that player.

The Good and Bad of that last quarter are as follows.

Good:
- Stefan Martin; 8 touches a goal and he was a constant presence at aerial contests around the ground. He may well have won it for us.
- Petterd; 5 touches and a presence around the clinches
- Jamar; some fantastic ruckwork from the Russian (although he is looking slightly out of sorts at centre bounces currently)
- Our resilience, luckily we didn't lie down this time ala the infamous North game... and the Eagles game... and against Carlton in the last... so that was pleasing.
- Frawley; COULD NOT BE BEATEN
- Rivers; provided a cool head in defense, was sure by foot.

Bad:
(Not necessarily all 'bad' but it contributed to our last quarter semi-slump)
- Gysberts, Nicholson, Strauss and McKenzie really struggled with the heat and conditions IMO. They looked tired and unsure of themselves. I completely understand the reasons for this (I'm not intending to grill them), but that doesn't make it less true.
- Howe as sub; didn't suit our needs in the last quarter, look at how Rodan influenced the game. An Evans would have been useful, a bit of foresight is needed in this role (horses for courses as well)
- Watts' miss, it was understandable and he was exhausted... but he needs to learn to kick goals like that, especially when he had struggled to get involved
- Jurrah and Green going missing (0 and 1 disposals respectively)
