Pretty disappointing result really, i thought we played just OK, but when it boils down to it, were beaten by the better side on the day...who were prepared to run, carry and take the game on. Thought Pendles was great, davis good, Medders good in patches, swanny not bad. This game highlighted the fact, that when a team pushes numbers back, and zones...we struggle...big time! Then, when we inevitably give the ball up, we are smashed on the counter-attack. We saw it last week against the cats, when sides look to the play the middle of the ground, we either arent disciplined enough to cotton onto it, or just cant implement a plan to counteract it...i find myself asking...every bloody time they go through the guts...HOW HARD IS IT TO WORK OUT! If we dont fix that, sides will continualy dance through the middle and spot up targets inside f50 at will. Further, how the hell can Macleod be allowed so much space and time!!?

Side note: Thought the umpires were absolutely atrocious, and the holding the ball rule/interpretation needs clarifying...becasue it was the opposite to HAW V GEEL. Petrenko for their mob looks like a gun.

All in all, would have rathered a win, but it is RD 1, and we will be fine, just didnt go our way today. Adelaide are a lot better than some pundits are suggesting too.

I'll make it quick -

Thomas was good - his brilliance kept us in the game

Pendlebury was good - his skills helped us alot around the stoppages

John Anthony - Jebus can this guy take a contested mark - superb in front of goals - he beat Rutten IMHO

Cox - his dash and rebound out of half back was very good - needs to learn to shack a tag as it kept him relatively quiet in the second half

Leon - he was fantastic in the second half - why didn't MM play him in the middle from the first bounce?

Cloke - His kicking for goal was very good but needs to do more

Game style - why did we handpass so often in the first half of the match?

Another 2nd 1/4 win after a flat effort in the first.
Is there any reason Mick can't stay on the ground up to the bounce then run for the Coaches box, they seem to do so much better when he has had the "last minute pump up."
Since Bryan is fairly limited skills wise shouldn't he just bash the ball forward like Brisbane used to.
We seemed to over posses by hand in the first 1/4 and parts of the rest of the game, but I thought significantly on occassions it was pretty effective. More time for it to become second nature and be the more Modern game.

I almost regret having foxtel now LOL. I may not have watched a delayed telecast Knowing we had lost.
Very disappointed to go down in the first game and blow four points it could come back to bite us again.
But lots to like about the season ahead.

- we need a decent ruckman
- We need one of Beams/Cook/Stanley/Sidebottom to be given a go
- We need to work on playing 4 quarters of footy
- That number 15 in the green from the opposition will be a gun kicked 3 goals when they looked gone

But lots to like about the season ahead.

yep hopefully malthouse gets sacked very soon and someone like buckley who actually cares about the club can implement a modern gameplan without hacks such as toovey, johnson and bryan playing. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Pendles, Marty, Swan, Thomas, Cox and leon were our best imo.

Our first quarter was horrible, we looked good in the 2nd and 3rd quarters when we moved the ball quickly but we lost all of our run at the end of the 3rd and never got it back.

Vince, Mcleod, Goodwin and Edwards were v good for the crows.

Here are Mine:

  • Reid is still not AFL Level
  • Goldsack is not much better then Racer in Dispoal
  • Good to see some Straight Kicking for goal
  • Clarke was Good
  • Dids had a Shocker
  • Why Beams did not play I don't know
  • Bryan is Usless
  • Too Many TO
  • We are Not That bad
  • Hard to beat the Umps as Well

True should of Played Beams instead of Johnson

It's Round 1 and we had a narrow loss to a side that looks better than many of us thought it would be, so it's not time to get carried away by any means. I still think we'll be top 6 and have enormous scope for improvement.

But I would have to agree with the above. BJ's kicking is not and will never ever be up to AFL standard. For every long goal on the run there will be two or three rubbish kicks inside 50. There was more than one today. He's probably a top bloke and he's trying his guts out this season, but for me his disposal doesn't cut it.

There are young blokes waiting for a game that are decidedly better kicks and have shown enough to get a game. It's a long season and I reckon we'll see them soon enough.

The forward line is looking sweet as a nut, now with added "Jack's sticky palms" and his incredible kicking... he has a technique that will see him play a huge amount of footy for Collingwood. Will be a weapon.

And the backline is solid with huge upside. Hard to dispute that Harry O is a gun... he's like an eel when he gets the ball in his hands.

But O'Bree can't get the pill out of the middle all on his own all day, so it'll be interesting to see the side next week.

Oh, and the umpires were bloody awful in their "interpretation" of the holding the ball and throwing rule. Edwards dropped the footy when he was tackled and GOT A FREE KICK FOR IT. I mean, in all seriousness, that was a pathetic decision. *

Quite often when a side plays a few debutantes the sides enthusiasm goes up a little where as instead of giving Beams a game we go the other route and play Johnson.

Myke Cook looked the goods for the crows.

We did, but you know what happened...

we did after quarter time and only from then looked competitive.

btw, how Johnson gets a game before Beams is a ****ing disgrace and quite possibly cost us the game.

p.s. both Pendles and Daisy are guns.

just another inconsistent performance, until we get that consistency of effort we'll always get 12-13 wins a season. Need to be a 16 win club to be in it.
Really, the best way to beat the zone is hold the corridor through the middle since it relies on turnovers to score. Hold that you force them out wide (re: 2009 GF)
Poor Cloke, he'll get murdered until Ant comes back, they're just going to smother him every week, and we'll kill him

True we are to often Hot and Cold during the game where we should just stay hot

I wasn't sure at the start, but Cox is starting to grow on me.

Ah hell, I like Cox.

And by the way, we need to chose our backup ruckman and go with it. I don't want to see Wood and Bryan replacing each other all the time.

I reckon it's time to go with Wood for good now and see if he has what it takes.

If not move him on.

Some stats from the game -

John Anthony - 3 contested marks, 4 inside 50's, 4 marks inside 50 and 2.1 goals playing on Rutten

Dale Thomas - 4 inside 50's, 3 goal assists (most for Collingwood) and four 1%rs

Leon Davis - 3 inside 50's, 5 rebound 50's, 7 contested possessions, 4 tackles and 4 clearances (played behind the ball, IIRC)

Scott Pendlebury - 7 clearances (our best around the stoppages), 1 goal and 29 possessions at 90% efficiency (our best player, IMO)

Shannon Cox - 6 rebound 50's

put you hand up if your sick of BJ butchering another kick

im sorry but with this possesion football he does not have a spot any more

he has also lost any flair he had, as well as his ability to be one touch. The game has gone past Ben Johnson.
