Gameplan against the Eagles

I like Carn the cattas thinking. Selwood to go with Judd or Kerr. That frees up others in the middle to win clearances. We will not beat West Coast trying to beat them at their own game.

Selwood will do OK and learn plenty as well.

I fail to see how Selwood tagging Judd or Kerr frees up other midfielders any more than Ling tagging them does.

I'd much rather Selwood running free than Ling running free.

Eagles wont flood which will favour our gameplan.

Concise, I like it. The other issue is the Eagles' main strength of running/breaking the lines is hampered somewhat by the narrower dimensions of Skilled as opposed to Subiaco for instance.

Physicality to their mids to stop their natural run at Skilled has worked before against them and can again. If Rooke is available he will and should play for this reason. Lots of body on body contests first half. If the Eagles cant get the ball to their forwards at their usual rate which they have often struggled to do at Skilled we will win as their forward line is not as flash as you would think for a reigning premier.

We need to be very focused and single minded to do it but the rewards will be worth it.

Well, this will be an interesting test of our supposed superior fitness to last season.

The physicality and winning the contested ball is one thing, but running as hard as the Eagles do is another. Their pace is one thing, but their hard running is the other. Subiaco or Skilled Stadium, you can bet the latter element won't change all too much.

I have full confidence in Bomber to come up with a complex winning gameplan. It will be something along the lines of "kick a bigger score....it worked last week"

I liked what the doggies did, when the eagles had the ball it was one on one/man on man then try and run off them when they got the ball. It nearly worked too.
Yep we are not very accountable when it comes to sticking man-on-man when the opposition has the ball, has caused us problems this year.

My Match ups
Ling - Kerr
Scarlett - Big Q
Egan/Harley - Hansen
Corey - Judd
Will Scarlett still play on Lynch if he roams up the ground, because that what he has been doing this year? Got 11 inside 50's last week, 21 possessions playing mostly up the ground, kicked 2.4 as well.

I would love to see Lingy keep Kerr to under 20 possies and have him playing FB at some stage. He has done it to almost everyone else he has tagged this year!

DF have some positive reflections about your team, give it a go. You may amaze yourself.

i am positive, im just not going to start dancing a jig after smashing the bottom team and our other two wins being against the bottom placed teams.

a bit of pressure from decent sides and we melt. i hope this changes but have supported this club for way too long to be over confident.

Start Chapman, G Ablett & Bartel in the middle and try and win the clearances.

Ling to run with Kerr after the ball ups.

Play Hawkins and Mooney out of the goal square and let them lead to opposite sides of the gound and kick it to the one that Glass is not playing on. Must keep Glass out of the play and as deep as possible.

N Ablett, S Johnson and Varcoe across half forward.

Good plan, but we've damn well lost Chappie. Very bad news.

Corey needs to be in there. He is hard at it and at least gets clearances (when he is not we usually get smashed). It is one of his saving graces - so let him do what he does best - ball out of the middle to runners or on the boot quickly into the forward line.

That may work against a kindergarten team, but not against a team on top of the ladder, with the best defence. Pin point passes from defence and hit a leading target inside 50. WC are great at getting men up when the ball comes in long.
In my opinion, the above and "long and direct" aren't mutually exclusive.

I don't agree there, Ling would be great if he is just a tagger and pick up disposals every now and again. Unfortunately due to really poor form (i.e. Kelly), injuries (i.e. Jnr last year), and no one else seemingly not having the engine big enough to run around the middle, Ling had to try to win the ball.

This isn't one of his strong suits, but I can tell you, being a tagger is. He should have been beaten for pace against Deledio, but wasn't. So I think he has been told to get back to what he does best.

I'm sure if he took on Judd or Kerr (favour Kerr over Judd), then we will do ok.

totally agree,

i have no doubt at all ling will get either judd or kerr , ling is the number one tagger at Geelong, so why would that change ?? ling isn't quick, so he gives away leg speed to his opponent every week, i'm not his biggest fan but his form has been solid all year. he gets first crack for mine.

judd and kerr...wanted two taggers; ling ( not quick but will run all day ) and who else? priz and rooke would be nice if rook is right to go...

i could be proven wrong and hope i am but ling will be eaten alive by either kerr or judd. especially the way the umpires have been favouring judd with frees of late.

Two tough, crazy bastards... neither of whom will back out of a contest. A cracker match up in no mistake :D
Mooney up forward, Hunter down back - Geelong outscore West Coast by nine goals.

Why do people think the eagles flood? They dont, Wooshas game plan is pure man on man.

I reckon our gameplan should be to get numbers behind the ball. Shock....Horror!

Tagging Judd or Kerr will obviously take place but the problem with the WCE is that they rotate so many through their midfields. Kerr, Judd, Embley, Braun, Waters, Rosa, Selwood, Stenglein....even Staker.

If we try and have 5 players do the same work as 8 or 9 eagles, the Bartell, Ling or whoever will be gone and we'll be criticising engines and fitness and pace etc on monday.

Everyone will need to run through, including Chappy and G.Abblett.
