Game plans are overrated, all sides play the same what stands out is skill levels, work rate & being selfless most games are won by a team with a dominant ruckman it instilled confidence in the midfield which in turn gives confidence around the ground.

Most dominant sides have skill to execute the ball going forward we rarely go into the center going forward which shows a lack of confidence from the coaches on our skill & delivery.

Agree with most of that apart from the dominate ruckman.

Don't think you can be further from the truth. Team structures play a large part in how teams can actually move the ball from one end of the ground to another. If your playing a table that's all over the shop in positioning etc, then it's easier to hit targets as there is more room for players to lead into etc. If the team set up and don't allow you space to kick it into then you end up bombing the ball long which we seem to be doing.

The perfect example of this is last year and the Hawks. They had to change the way the approached the game in terms of stactics as it clearly wasn't working for them at the start. Same set of players and I'm pretty sure Clarko even said that they changed the gameplan as it wasn't working at the start of the year and were on track to win the wooden spoon. Fast forward 12 weeks later, and they end up on the same amount of points as us. Big difference.

Richardson talks about stats and pressure.
Pressure gameplans are old school and taxing. We have little leadership in the field and we dont play to our strengths.
We have 3 big gun forwards. Move the ball quickly, dont hold on to the ball and create stoppages. So wrong for us.

The alarm bells for me were when richo felt round 1 was good and “positive”

We will not go anywhere with Richardson. Needs to go ASAP.

Then theres MOTIVATION. Would you want to play for Alan Richardson compared to other coaches. He reeks of Mark Neeld. Im sure he knows he stuff of course but a coach is simply there to teach, lead and head a technical board of coaches. Richo makes a GREAT ASSISTANT. Not head coach.

Which again we dont have! Jamie Cox and co are not afl experienced yet lead an afl club.

Reiwoldt and Montagna were doing more for this club than we realised.

We have the talent but we need gun coaches before we ruin the talent or piss off the talent (dunstan, battle, white, mckenzie)

We are too cautious and afraid of turnovers is defence.
This leads to overuse in the backline, takes us too long to get fwd, by the time we get to the wing the Oppo have set up their defence, blocking leads and we just bomb.
Need to take more chances R50.
I don't think I have ever seen a side be so conservative from deep in defence. We are too scared to turn it over, and therefore are so predictable, that the opposition know where we are going, get the numbers to that spot, and then the turnover happens. Kangaroos were very good at starting out with low numbers in their forward line (often lining up at centre bounces with 3 forwards, and the rest starting on the wing and half back. We had many spare numbers in the same spot. Then once the ball came forward, Kangaroos streamed down in numbers, and our players were too often flat footed in the same general area.

It really stands out that defensively we are not gelling. To have many spare numbers when the ball is not in the area, but to then get caught out with Kangaroo players in a huge amount of space simply shows the team defence is failing at present. When this fails, confidence is sapped.

This is without even commenting on clearance work, and forward work.

Reiwoldt and Montagna were doing more for this club than we realised.
I for one now think their on field leadership was of immense importance....I am also a little guilty of under estimating that once they retired.

Pre season I often wondered what impact their absence from an on field leadership role .......at the back and front of the field....would have on us.....a lot it would now appear.

The big issue I have with Richo is that I don’t believe he is a good match day coach. He lacks a tactical mind to anticipate things occurring in games. He lacks mental agility to make moves. He basically relies on the players executing the game plan/set structures to a tee, & if they don’t, the coach cannot be relied upon to make a few positional/structural moves to influence the game. You do not often see Richo place a hard tag on an opposition player throughout the game. Sure, he may plan for a hard tag such as Ross going to Dangerfield. But what if some other bloke is off the chain? Rarely do we see Richo make a change once the first ball is bounced. Numbers behind the ball...rarely see it...Billings getting tagged out of the game. Why don’t we put him behind the ball? Getting killed out of the middle. Let’s throw in the GOAT. Mental agility, richo lacks imho.

I'll agree with you on Richo's issues, at the moment I see the failings as being two fold.
1- the players I feel have been drinking their own bath water. How many are waiting for someone else to influence the course of the game?
2- Is it McPhee, Kingsley or both? We've been smashed in the middle two games in a row. The core of the midfield are simply better than they are delivering, why is it as bad as it is? This year will be a moment of truth for a lot of us.

Hard to know the exact reasons why. The only personal change to the centre bounce is Armo. This has meant Dunstan has been dropped, Steele goes to a flank, Acres moves from flank to wing & Sinclair from wing to fwd pocket. As you can see, that one personal change has compounded the problem & impacted other areas on the ground. Do we go back to Seb, Steven & either Dunstan/Steele at the centre bounce?

But, our formline is nothing new. We were poor in the JLT, lucky to beat Brisbane & smacked by the wooden spoon favourites. Now this is alarming from Darren Parkin’s Twitter:

“In Round 16 2017 St.kilda beat Richmond by 67 points. Both sides were 9-6 and seperated by just 1 per cent and 1 ladder position.
Since then
Richmond 10 wins, St.Kilda 3
Quarters won. Richmond 32, St.Kilda 13
Saints percentage 82.8
Tigers percentage 163.1”

Big issues for mine:

- lack fast, agile players
This is compounded by the fact we then don't train all summer long against these types either, so we get a shock to the system coming up against a handful of C - B players who can keep their feet and take off in numbers and use space like we can't

Leads to second point:
- we harass and apply pressure like we are playing against slow movers and slow decision makers like ourselves. Jack Steele might not be able to twist and turn around 2-3 fast approaching tacklers and flick the ball to a free man in space out the back, but a dozen no name players for the opposition can do it like clockwork

Leads to third point:
- Game/contest IQ
Our players, good and bad, don't know how to manipulate contests to our advantage. We're not only behind the ball with player types, but we also don't know how to arm wrestle with these types. We have to rely on the opposition not clicking to be even a remote chance, because they are a step ahead of us in regards to manipulating contests, extracting the pill, using numbers, player movement, and so on.

- player motivation
We're behind the curve with our list and collective footy IQ. It's hard to get pumped up when you're stuck in the mud, burning yourself out for nothing time and time again.

Fits in with the last good game roo played. He was always going to be huge loss. Much more than we all realised. And it has a 2 fold effect. He got the best forward no the good backs don’t even really worry about our forwards

Win vs loss, yes it does explain a lot. However it still doesn’t explain why we are getting smacked out of the centre by bottom four teams. We were okay in that area last year. This year we’ve been schooled by Carlton & Melbourne (understandably) in the JLT & Brisbane & North in the real season who finished 18th & 15th last year.

Longer has been useless in the centre bounce. That hasn’t helped. Steele hasn’t really gone in there. Ross has been quieter. And then there the other issue. I don’t really know why.

Kicking long to a contest, or bombing, is a symptom of the gameplay breaking down up the ground. It’s not the intent of the coaches or players. It happens when the oppo is putting heavy pressure on the ball carrier, we’re not running in numbers (effort) or oppo have flooded back and with little options the bomb becomes the best choice.
Our transition from back to forward is quick and aggressive and relies on effort and excellent execution of skills.
I’m hoping that the scrappy early season skills are hurting our ability to execute the plan. Something that we will be able to rectify.
When it works it’s sublime - ref tigers game.

The way I see it - our plan is to play on fast, Give the corridor priority, favour kick over handball (high oppo pressure flips this mix) and have an aggressive back line that isn’t afraid to leave their man in transition.
When this plan fails we get burnt badly because it’s aggressive and attacking hence easy to open us up on rebound. You would’ve heard the conmentators commenting that north could raffle the options on rebound there were that many.

Skills critical.

If I’m Richo and I’m thinking about changes in personnel this week I’d look at two things - 1. Effort 2. Disposal efficiency

Mav and Gilbo bring 1 but not 2.
Coff brings 2 but doesn’t have the tank yet to fully deliver the required four qtr effort.

Lonie and Dunstan bring 1 and 2.
White falls down on 1.

Also - bringing back Arno has caused a shuffle that now has Steele and Sincs playing out of the positions they were building a great body of work in.

We will bounce back. It’s a matter of time.

I am so off our supporters right now. The North game is the only game in the past 2 years of home and away games where we’ve dropped a game we were expected to win. Seriously...it’s tough to watch of course but iwinning a premiership is not a formula and rebuild to flag is not a 7-10year guarantee. Give them a break. They are literally doing everything they possibly can...
Okay fair enough. But as fans we bought the 5 year plan. Now as the final year is panning out, right now what is the club doing? Instituting a brand new defensive structure? WTF. Giving the coach another two years? Really? So is this 5 year plan actually a 7 year plan? And will it turn into a 9 year plan?

A gameplan is a plan to win a game- that's it. The style of play etc is another thing. To have a good season we need a few players to have breakout seasons, or a much improved season. The only player who seems to be giving it a real go is Acres, but needs a few of his mates to stop looking in the mirror.

It's damning isn't it?
Is it worth ask(ick)ing, what happened at or near round 16?
Because Richo hasn't got worse as a coach since then, all the problems he has are the same, did other clubs all of a sudden start to take notice of us and pull the game plan apart? I have no idea and The In The Knows probably won't tell us, even if they do know.

One thing that might be happening whether it is Richo or one of the line coaches is that the "coach" has lost the players? Even then Buckley hasn't lost the players at Collingwood, the players can love the coach but can still play crap, maybe we have the same issues as Richmond did with Dimma and Wiliams. Again without being on the inside it's hard to know what's going on.

While the best view of a burning house is rarely from the inside, just running commentary on it isn't helping.

Gee....I didn't realise we were Even Steven at that point.

That's a depressing set of stats.

i'm just so over being a shit club. literally every club bar melbourne, GC, GWS and Freo have gone past us. financially, premierships etc. some of those even have the potential to go past us this season or next.

yet we continue to be precious at the mere thought that we might not be that great. i mean like, wtf are you getting upset about, its ALREADY HAPPENED!!!! the moment the dogs and then richmond won a flag should have been the moment saints fans grew some balls and accepted whats occurring right under their nose

It’s awful & makes me want to vomit just thinking about it. What’s worse, is that there doesn’t appear to be an answer from the club anytime soon. It’s like it’s just been accepted that that’s where we sit (I’m sure it’s not btw but that’s the external perception imo).

What’s pretty clear is many players have lost confidence. Whether that is to do with themselves individually or to do with the teams output & gameplan is anyone’s guess. Probably a bit of both tbh.

Imo the game against the Blues last year was the blueprint on how to beat us. Bolton had his players pressure our ball carriers, which caused us to bomb it long & he sat a couple of extras behind the ball. Then Sydney did similar & flogged us. With the exception of the Tigers game we never quite recovered from that point.

We are all waiting for the players & coach to respond. So far they haven’t shown anything to suggest they will. I think we are a long way back & the season is a compete write off.

Don't have any actual experience in tactics so this is just from observing our games and every game each weekend
From.my point of view, the plan seems to be clear in intention, but definitely not in execution

In offence, it looks like are trying to use handballs to break through congestion Como g out from stoppages until we are free, and then try to get it forward if over lapping running in order to get to one on ones inside 50. We also seem to try to use a switch when we get free but can't find any overlapping run, the problem is our skills can be so atrocious for whatever reason, and we start losing ground and give the opponents time to reset their structure.

When we lose a clearance or possession, our game looks to be to pressure and harass the opponents ball users in order for them to panic kick the ball so that our zone defence can sweep it up. All of it falls apart though if we fail to pressure the ball carriers, or the opponents play a simple kick and Mark game, leaving us exposed due to not being man-on-man

Haven't a clue what we are trying to do when we kick it out of our defensive 50. Been a long time since I saw a coast to coast goal from us

Maybe we just don't have the skills yet?

I do have another alternative. Support the club because there is no other choice. It’s round friggin 2.
