In football, it is obvious that the weather conditions play a part in how the game is played. For example, scores of 8.13-61 to 5.9-39 would suggest a wet weather game due to the low aggregate; scores of 28.16-184 to 24.13-157 would probably take place in fine weather; while a scoreline of 14.22-106 to 10.24-84 would suggest that a strong cross breeze had caused the inaccuracy.
But sometimes, a game will seem to defy the weather conditions in which it is played. One such game I remember from 1996 was the West Coast Eagles defeating St Kilda 22.9-141 to 17.6-108 in teeming rain at Subiaco Oval. While such high scoring and accuracy seldomn occur at any rain-soaked game, it is made even more unusual by the fact that the West Coast Eagles in this area would very rarely defeat a team by engaging in a shoot out; usually they would wear down an opponent by restricting the forwards and midfield, which was not friendly to either high scoring or accuracy, even in fine weather.
Can anyone name other games they have watched where teams kicked straight in a howling breeze or frittered away chance after chance on a still autumn day; any low scoring slogs in fine, warm weather and good grounds; or any shoot-outs in driving rain and mud?
(Obviously, games played under the roof at Docklands do not count).
