This one’s a positive for Richmond. Although Gold Coast are 18th, the Richmond vs Gold Coast halftime score of 103-19 this year shocked me.

Up until that point, Gold Coast were pretty competitive at home and didn’t allow big scores with the exception of the Brisbane game in Round 6. Even away, the only teams that really obliterated them were GWS and Adelaide. Hence, I expected it to be a sub-100 scoreline for both teams in a low-scoring slog considering it was raining too.

Suddenly, Richmond kicked 56 points in the first quarter and continued on with the romping after the break, giving us a score of 89 points 13 minutes into the second quarter. Crazy stuff considering that Richmond isn’t really a side that obliterates other teams like that very often

I am sure it had variables such as how many players would be future tennis coaches, AFL club coaches, players that would have sons be drafted to club lists and how many K's in the names of both clubs, how many interchanges would be made by both teams and divided by age of six youngest players on each team.
Glad I could help...

Over time, I've discovered that the best predictor of the final winning margin is the final winning margin. No matter how many other variables I include in my model, that one is far and away the most reliable.

One that stands out as a Dogs fan is Round 9, 2011 against the Eagles in Perth.

We had made preliminary finals in 2008-10 and in 2011 had made an unconvincing start, it looked doubtful we could be a contender again, but the week before the Eagles we had a convincing win so there was some glimmer of hope that maybe we’d be in amongst it again.

Against the Eagles that notion was slammed shut - we got thrashed, mauled, humiliated by 123 points. The Eagles were great but we were beyond awful.

It was depressing and a major shock, not just the margin of the loss but watching just how far we had fallen, that the premiership window we’d been in was officially gone, how old, slow and tired the squad now was and the depressing reality of being back in rebuild mode.

The best part was that I rated us in the 2011 pre-season (didn't think we were terrible by spoon standards and had scope), and a doggies fan on another forum was massively trolling for me even suggesting we'd be a chance at finals. I made sure to remind him about it after the "easy as 1 2 3" win rofl.

That first no-way-back mauling post-contention is always a hard pill to swallow, I feel you.

For us, trouncing Adelaide in Rnd 17 2006 definitely stands out. Our chances of winning the flag that year doubled in that game, and it also gave hope to the rest of the competition given how supreme the Crowbots had played up to that point.

Genuinely interested...how were you the best?

Comfortably beaten in the GF. In addition, Hawks were comfortably better during the entire month of September.

Which leaves...?
Average home and away losing margin of 86 points.

One for me was our Elimination Final loss against the Dogs in 2006. I went into that game expecting that there was no way known we could drop it.

We then produced an absolutely appalling effort which is now only remembered for Brodie Holland’s thuggery.

Gold Coast beating Sydney at the SCG by 4 goals last year.

Where the actual fu** did that come from? Game looked over at QT then Sydney went to sleep. 6-0 second quarter, 2-0 second quarter, 3-2 last quarter in terms of goals scored.

Swans have often been crap at home, even GC beat them, yet we still can't beat them at the SCG. It's been 20 years. Must be some mental barrier.

Even if I knew what you were talking about, what conceivable metric would be in any way relevant?

They were comfortably beaten on GF day, and were outplayed throughout September. Nothing else even borders on relevant.

Outplayed during September. Guess we just fell into the grand final

The 2005 GF, not because it was unexpected, but we'd never played in such a close grand final before, and we'd never put so much into cheering for the boys to get over the line. Obviously very disappointing.

2016 EF against the Dogs was the obvious upset. Almost no one gave the Dogs a chance, but they pulled our daks down. Weren't happy but had to respect them. In hindsight I don't mind that they won given they went on to win it all, and we were no chance to win the flag that year.

Last year against the Dees at home rnd 22 was it? They were impressive, but it almost felt like your home had been burgled lol.

Huh? Did I say that, or imply anything of the sort?

But in the context of Hawks vs Cats during September '08, you were outplayed during that month. Outplayed on GF day, plus the Hawks & Cats played the same 3 clubs during September with the Hawks having about a +9 goal differential from memory.

2017 GF loss.. Took us 20 years to get back on the big stage and fot us to fall apart like that left me numb... will never get over it cos we will never win another flag.
2017 Elim final Port v WC.. West Coast winning it.. i was over the moon with joy but shocked that it happened.
2013.. North v Crows at Docklands.. to be so far down in the 3rd term to watch North fall apart and to win by a point with 17 secs on the clock left us all shocked.

So you don't think you could win 4 away finals in September like the 1998 Crows? haha joking.

2014 Elimination Final.

After driving ~700km from Melbourne and thinking we were a realistic chance on the back of nine straight wins, I read the daily paper over lunch at Glenelg and was dismayed that our prospects were being dismissed by the local journo's. That was nothing compared to the impact of being down seven goals to nil halfway through the first quarter. Wanted to leave, but there was nowhere to go. The rest of the game was humdrum but the shock of those first ~15 minutes was something else.

Last year's prelim is probably a distant second, but not in the same ballpark. Would've been much tougher without the previous year's flag.

Probably the game I realised that Richmond were able to win the premiership

We'd been convincingly beaten at Geelong the previous week and I was pretty nervous about this game. Freo came out hard and physical as they usually do against us and the first quarter was pretty even. After that it was showtime.

If any part of that is incorrect, feel free to correct me. Otherwise, those windows won't lick themselves!

Lol yes its me banging my head against a brick wall - they beat the Saints in the finals by more than your Bradburying mob did - sheesh :$

wow, you are seriously not playing with a full deck.

Your post would be relevant...if I'd said they didn't beat the St's by more than us. But I didn't say that - at all.

I'll break it down as simply as I can. Hawks and Cats both played St Kilda, Bulldogs and each other during September...Hawks ended up + 131pts (final margins), Cats ended up +61pts. I don't know how to make it any simpler. And the only reason I even mention the above was in response to the inference that it was only GF day that the Hawks were better. Although even if it was (only GF day), we'd still be the team of 2008. :thumbsu:
