Yep, as close to the base as you can.

If it’s dead wood it’s dead weight and can get in the way of new basal shoots coming up from the graft.

Also, the reason I get rid of as much of that hard wood or bark off the graft is that if it’s all left there and covering the graft, there’s basically no way any new growth will come up from there, as it will be too soft to penetrate through all that hard wood.

I’d say that’s why really old roses don’t send up fresh new canes from the base. There’s no chance of them penetrating through the hard bark to come out.

When I do my winter prune I also look for bark that I can peel off the graft, because again, if the graft is covered in bark (which happens eventually with all roses) there’s pretty much zero chance of any fresh new basal shoots coming through.

Some people do it with sandpaper, while others use wire. And you definitely want to cut any dead canes back as close to the graft as you can. Basically put the blade of the secateurs flat on the graft and cut it off. Otherwise it can get in the way of new basal shoots.

I got new growth out of that stump a few weeks later.

It’s good info to know, cheers, at least roses won’t look so gnarly in winter when you’re removing all the dead stuff. I don’t grow roses anymore as I’m a native plant nut but they are still one of my favourite flowers.

I’ve lost a few new plantings in the last few weeks. So dry out my way if you forget to water just for one week the plants suffer. We’ve probably only had 200mm of rain this years.

Got a peanut cactus as well .
Not growing at the rate I want it to grow at.

Heaps of others with pups growing around them .

Put some large ish rocks in the garden for plants to grown around.
Plants said we're growing over the rocks .
Plants with attitude.

They are awesome but as a cut flower the smell in your home can be really strong.

Noticed one of the monkey/rats tail super dry , hopefully I got to it before to late..hope a good drink helps it.
Potted up some cactus...few more to go to clean up all the plants I needed to re-pot.

Mowed lawns , seasol garden ,put in some new flowers in .
Brought a hose reel to keep my over priced (130$) big hose tidy..

Garden looking alot different than 2 years ago alot more plants and good cover across the garden beds.

Still abit more to do tho.

Cactus ok to look after just need to keep a eye on them....can be lots of work if wanna sell bits of them.

But in the heat out front it's all that will grow there...some seem to love it there.
Others struggle I need to move a few around.
Have limited about of space for all the plants I have.
But the cactus place out the road for sale and thier stuff is half price.
Got a few spare pots ..I guess you got no space...you got a little spare space..lol .

Lots of like sun and not alot of water...
I've found some can't handle the sun I get on those hot summer days .

Nah only chickens and dogs, I share farm about 20 acres, this season we had a canola crop. I generally only plant Australian natives and specifically low rainfall sa and wa species that grown on limestone soils.
