I've seen media bashing the Gold Coast's recruiting, management, coaching, fitness staff and yet you're just cherry picking the Ablett stuff because you're clearly emotional about him. Yet again you've totally ignored the key point to spew out the same "best player in the comp" argument which is totally irrelevant when you are talking about LEGAL CONTRACTS. Ablett CHOSE to go there, he CHOSE to STAY there and yet you have some inability to accept that peoples actions have consequences, Ablett made his decision there was no one forcing him.
Good grief, i must be speaking Swahili. I have acknowledged several times that the deal was impossible to refuse, he then played four of the greatest seasons ever seen by an individual player paying back the "Bums" in full. (yes, indeed he was the best player in the competition with a lot of daylight before number 2) The club let him down by not keeping his replacements. He then cops a serious injury and the fortunes of Gold Coast all fall flat, Ablett gets all the criticism for it.
Don't talk to me about Legal contracts, you know as well as i do, they mean jack shit. You can do whatever you want in this world of ours if you have the money and representation to change things. Circumstances in life change every year for people, nothing ever stays the same. If Ablett was working with a huge multi national company he would be gone by now. However, nobody gives a fat rats tossbag about multi national companies. Football on the other hand is an emotional game and football fans have little to NO common sense when talking about it.

I have no idea if Ablett will return to Geelong, (personally i think it would be a huge slap in the face to Johnson, Chapman, Kelly and Bartel). The Geelong marketing department will disagree with me, the theatre and romance of it all would ensure increased membership and huge home crowds in 2018 if it were to happen. Yes Ablett chose to go there (who wouldn't?) yes, he chose to stay there ( who else could afford him?) Yes, nobody forced him, but major life changes happen to each and every one of us and sometimes your employment is part of that change? Anytime you change roles, or maybe you’re changing jobs, going back to work, or doing something completely different, your identity can feel threatened, which can disrupt your view of yourself. Getting married is another big game changer, even if it is something you wanted, it still can create big changes in your life and sense of self, as does starting a new life with a new person. It's a huge friggin' step, made even bigger when you are living away from your comfort zone! People's actions? What about his employers actions?

Gold Coast have had more time than GWS yet are light years away from their development stage! Ablett jr was sold a lemon and now that he's arking up about it people point the finger at him. My bet is he will retire at the end of the year and that is a tragedy for footy. So much for his 2018 contract.

It's easy to refuse, but Ablett obviously didn't want to, that argument is BEYOND absurd. For what it's worth you are so very wrong about legal contracts, it's a topic I know a little bit about given it's my job.

I can see your point as far as the legal side of things go, but what about his "personal issues" that he wants to deal with back home?

On compassionate grounds I would have thought there's a reasonable case to at least look at allowing him to go back to Geelong. I don't think the main reason he wants to go back is because of homesickness or because he wants to play with GFC again, though that will probably be the outcome if he plays beyond this season at all.

Surely family must come first. It can't be having a positive effect on his match-day efforts so why prolong the agony? Just let him go is my thought.

Respectfully.

P.S. I'm assuming some here know what the "issue" is believed to be.

I agree that it's sad situation and a shame but to be honest I find it a little bemusing that these issues are by his own words "more important than football" but he wouldn't pull the trigger, retire and move home or seek a compassionate leave if that's truly necessary, it seems just a little contradictory to me. I'm not saying for a minute there is no personal issues just I'm a little unsure if they aren't being used more so to justify his desire to leave the club more so than necessity. Morally however you are right, clubs should let players go if there's valid personal reasons the trouble is with agents, lawyers etc these days they'll jump all over that to get their clients out of contracts left right and center if clubs set a precedent too often don't enforce contracts. It's all a complex situation and sadly there's no real winners in this, all parties are damned if they do, damned if they don't.

The Bryce gibbs situation is not that different, he wanted to go home for personal reasons and I can empathise with him and his partner but at the same time I think both Carlton and Adelaide did the right thing. Carlton had the right to demand a high payment for the trade and Adelaide made the right decision to pass on him rather than get carried away in the expectation of securing him. Unfortunately it's Bryce and his partner who got the shaft in many respects but that's just the nature of a business where you are signing long term contracts, it's the situation players knowingly put themselves in and are compensated by being paid well for it.

Personal issues can't be that bad if he only wants to go to the Cats. There is a little place just up the road where I'm sure most of the 9 clubs would be happy to pay for his services

There's no guarantee that he's going back to Geelong, but that would be the most logical thing to do wouldn't it? And I guess he wants to be as close to home as possible.

As far as his "personal issues" go, I'm in no position to judge how bad they are for him.

Sports stars, actors and musicians frequently find themselves bound to viciously unfair contracts that amount to well-paid indentured servitude. Plenty of AFL players have changed clubs while still under contract in recent years. Ablett obviously has personalissues that need to be addressed immediatley, not in 2019.
Us mere mortals sign away our life every week, we all do it. How many user agreements have you clicked through in your life without reading them? I'm going to guess it's one for every single piece of software you've ever used, and every gadget, and frig knows what else. You've probably signed off on hundreds of pages of dense, unread legal jargon in your life. I know i have, who reads all that shit? Well, guess what, we've all but signed away our soul. Now if you are a major celebrity you can get out of anything. During his contract feud with Warners Prince became another person. "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince," of course this is not how contract law works. It does seem like somebody should have told Prince that, somewhere along the way. Over time it worked. Crazy stunts like that always work out in the end. If you're Prince!

Contracts? You can get out of anything you want too, if you try hard enough. Particularly if you are a sports star!
I suspect Gold Coast will hold their ground, although shouldn't they be shooting for the stars with another "much younger" prospect in mind?

Wow now you're comparing a playing contract to signing up to an app?? Really?? Talk about clutching at straws with no relevance what so ever. In any case we will simply have to agree to disagree on this one. It'll play out however it does, hopefully Ablett fronts up and plays a blinder today.

You are kidding right. His standard of footy may have been ok but his captaincy has been very poor with the Suns having the worst culture in the league.

His record has been tarnished not enhanced. Like Judd, great player, poor leader.
This post is probably the most rational and logical I've read.

What Gary brings as a player is elite, seriously elite, but at the door he leaves all leadership skills. Has not been able to develop a good leadership imprint at the club despite being there for 7 years. That's why a Hodge, Voss, Hayes, Ling etc are all guys that are exceptional 'footballers' as a package because they lift their teammates and are just great leaders.

With the multi million dollar wage comes being a great player, but also being a leader. Look at the success of Hawthorn after losing Franklin, another elite player, back to back flags. Geelong also won a flag the year Ablett left.

They also put sub par senior players into that club when it was established.

Ablett is better just being Ablett, selfish and dominant in a good side, Geelong for example. I've no doubt they'd have challenged again and again for premierships with him there post 11.

I for one want him to go around again. Has been good this game without being over used from teammates, going and winning some hard balls.

I want him to get somewhere near his best at the same time as players like Dangerfield and Fyfe and have some head to head match ups that will be worth watching.

I hope he wins another Brownlow this year and jams it right up Caro's clacker.
Jon Ralph lowered his colours too.
Suggesting he only appeared on the footy show for money.
We all know the footyshow is the biggest mouthpiece to the masses.
The only way to get his message explained.
Happy for the guy.
Shoved it up a few today.
Not for the first or the last time.

Wrong. Leadership starts at the very top. It's easy to be a great captain when you are at a well-run club. All the Hodges and Lingy's in the world ain't ever gonna help the Suns.
