My post was in response to the OP talking about the ‘big 4’ all hitting form during the same season.

By the way, nice trophy. I have one too. Can we be friends?
It is nice isn't it, just making note that we have done our bit to get the big 4 up the top, 4 out of the last 5 finals series, I would say in the next 2 or 3 years we might see all of them in the finals, although Carlton are a worry.

Hawthorn is officially a new member of the Big 4!

Welcome!

Richmond vs Hawthorn should open the season - why do we need to support these minnows?

I'd have to agree. Pounding out Carlton is a good way to kickstart the season but it's getting a bit tiresome.

It’s like that one year when we opened with Gold Coast. It didn’t feel like the season started until Round 2.

Give us Hawhorn for Round 1!

Everyone is going to pick their own team in that poll.. .. putting port in there is laughable.. look at the decline the past 3 years from 2014 when Adelaide oval was a novelty.
Common sense is Hawthorn has overtaken the Blues.
The AFL need to put the Blues in the same class NM, St Kilda, Dees etc. Fans are sick to death of Carlton opening up the season against Richmond... make it Richmond vs Hawthorn or Richmond vs Collingwood.

Richmond will be the biggest club for the first half of 2018.. so many bandwagonrs that weren't there from 1983-2016 will jump back on now but will also drop off as fast if they have a bulldogs of 2017 season.

Over the past 10 years
On Field - big 3 Hawks, Swans, Cats
FInancial - big 3 Hawks, Pies, Eagles
MEmberships - Big 6 HAwks, Pies, Tigers, WCE, Crows, Bombers
crowds - Big 4 Tigers, Pies, Bombers, Crows

Either is Essendon

Without this years flag Richmond wouldn't be either.
well said. Given Collingwoods last 5 years they're not either. None of those 4 are based on playing football. Tigers as you mentioned because of this years flag are but before that, what the * did they do for 3 and a half decades.

Big 4 was never about on-field success, but more around supporter bases & financial stability.

Richmond, Essendon and Collingwood are still in there.
Top 3 for Vic home attendances (focusing this on Vic since it's a concept of the state. It opens up wider if Adelaide, Sydney and West Coast are considered)
All 3 in the top 4 for memberships and are top 3 for attendances by members.

4th spot is up for debate though.
In defence of Blues fans, it's been a tough slog, and a year where their up and about should see them back.

But crowd attendances & membership numbers don't support their claim anymore.
Hawks could make this claim.
But they aren't historically a well backed club.
a three-peat and 4 flags in a decade helps get the punters to sign up and come to games.
But the first year they drop in performance and the numbers don't look great.
in 2016 they were the 3rd highest Vic club for home attendances. In 2017, 7th.
