Lyon "A Servicable Villain".
He may be the Walrus, too.

It would really burn up many threads if Mr PAUL ROOS, the PART TIME coaching consultant, was chosen for the big day. Geewizz, that sounds better and better.

Lyon was a pretty good player. A champion? Who knows.. every retired player ends up being a champion.
Who else?
Their 2 iconic players of recent decades Stynes & Flower have passed.
Their iconic coach, N Daniher too ill.
Their greatest living legend with 6 Dees flags, Barassi can’t travel.
Brownlow winners? Woewodin… Peter Moore, Brian Wilson. No way.
I’d have Nath Jones hand it over in a role a la Bob Murphy… but he’s home having twins!
Melbourne just haven’t had success for decades and sadly their most fitting individuals are no longer with and others just can’t get there.
I’m no fan of Lyon, and I don’t see how he is the embodiment of 60 years of waiting. But if it’s him, then it’s him.

Was sort of undecided who I wanted to win the GF, more so just wanting a good close contest .......... then I read that Garry ****** Lyon would be presenting the Cup to Melbourne if they win ....... that instantaneously changed who I wanted to win the 2021 Premiership.

Now firmly in the Dogs Camp.

Lyon is a dead set tosser, cuts his best mates grass behind his back, but what I despise him most for is the way he racially vilified and racially abused Chris Lewis when Melbourne played West Coast, now thats something that I can neither forget nor forgive him for.

The blokes moral compass is as whacked out as they come.

Go Doggies. :thumbsu:

What about The Whizz - was a pretty handy contributor for the Dees, kicked 6 in a prelim? And an indigenous player doing the presentation would be a pretty good thing to see.

Pleaded guilty to belting his partner amongst other assault convictions, no thanks.

Should have been Neitz. Club games record holder, longest serving captain.

In the unsavoury outcome of a dees win, I hope everyone listens to gary as he hands over the cup and makes an impassioned plea about the importnace to recognise temporary mental health issues which remain largely an inexplicable phenomenon to the layperson.
Hate how he has pulled the mental health card after clipping his best mates mrs and disappearing before coming back and getting on with it.

Lyon always seemed to have a bit of an issue with accountability.

Wanted to be a coach but didn't want the responsibility, and sort of chiselled his way in to coaching Australia once.

Wanted to fix Melbourne but didn't want the responsibility, and sort of got Neeld in as coach but then disappeared and put it onto Stynes.

Wanted to route his best mate's missus but didn't want the responsibility, so pulled the mental health card and disappeared for a year until the hubub had died down.

Wasn't his dad a second-hand car salesman in the country? Explains a lot. Gazza presents himself as a salf of the earth, down to earth bloke who is unimpressed by hype and hoopla, but deep down he is the son of a dodgy second car salesman and, like the bombs his old man used to flog, deep down he is a bit dodgy and unreliable.

I don’t know if second hand car salesman are all dodgy, I mean I bought a great Ford laser from one of these types and it was my best car!

On all your points though (bar his old man as I know nothing about that) I tend to agree. I was really annoyed at him claiming mental health after getting on with Billy’s mrs and then disappearing. Just own it. Say you and her are really into one another and have always really been that way. Just seemed a cheap way to gloss over it.

People that have mental health issues don’t typically always go around swording their best mates mrs.

Have you watched Neitz's interview on Open Mike?

Seems like a cracking bloke, carried the Dees through some dark days, and went from being one of the best CHBs in the league to leading the Dees' goal-kicking 7 times, but I reckon the AFL big whigs are worried he might get on the mic with his Fozzy Bear/Yoda sounding voice!

Exactly. Being depressed does not normally equal unsheathing the veal dagger.
It is usually the reverse. Depression damages libido, ability to form an erection, interest in partners, family, appetite etc. Worse cases, death injury to self or others close to them. Pretty heavy shiite. Gary's depression may have been real, I don't think anyone apart from himself and his doctor can know. His depression could have been caused by feelings of guilt and confusion over his actions, that's possible, but denying the depression is foundationless. Who knows what he was doing during the 12 months...he may have been on the precipice. I wouldn't wish spending time there on anyone.

I think he's a flog and I dislike pretty much everything he does and has done as a media person. Don't rate him at all.

BUT

He clearly has close ties to Melbourne still, and it's a choice for/on behalf of Melbourne. Most Dees fans would enjoy his commentary and still support him, which is what matters.

I'm not a big fan of Lyon, find him a bit smug and an air of arrogance. However there's no doubt he's built a hugely successful media career and of course that means he's going to a prominent figure when Melbourne are in the spotlight.

A bit smug? An air of arrogance?

Understatements, that's for sure!

Yeah I wouldn't actually deny that he had depression, even though I implied it by saying he pulled the mental health card.

What I did say directly is that he seems to have a habit of evading responsibility. I think he did want to root his mate's ex and avoid the consequences. The severity of his depression may well have been because a level of responsibilty was forced upon him - certainly by external forces (backlash amongst friends and media etc), and possibly by the internal forces of his own conscience - and he wasn't prepared for that, and struggled to deal with it. Who knows? Maybe it's made him a better person. Sometimes suffering can create more empathy in a person.
