Opinion Garry Lyon

Yeah I wouldn't actually deny that he had depression, even though I implied it by saying he pulled the mental health card.

What I did say directly is that he seems to have a habit of evading responsibility. I think he did want to root his mate's ex and avoid the consequences. The severity of his depression may well have been because a level of responsibilty was forced upon him - certainly by external forces (backlash amongst friends and media etc), and possibly by the internal forces of his own conscience - and he wasn't prepared for that, and struggled to deal with it. Who knows? Maybe it's made him a better person. Sometimes suffering can create more empathy in a person.
Avoiding responsibility is a very human thing. So is focusing on others' foibles to avoid looking at one's own. That's avoiding responsibility too. I know I do that shit from time to time.

Lyon always seemed to have a bit of an issue with accountability.

Wanted to be a coach but didn't want the responsibility, and sort of chiselled his way in to coaching Australia once.

Wanted to fix Melbourne but didn't want the responsibility, and sort of got Neeld in as coach but then disappeared and put it onto Stynes.

Wanted to route his best mate's missus but didn't want the responsibility, so pulled the mental health card and disappeared for a year until the hubub had died down.

Wasn't his dad a second-hand car salesman in the country? Explains a lot. Gazza presents himself as a salf of the earth, down to earth bloke who is unimpressed by hype and hoopla, but deep down he is the son of a dodgy second car salesman and, like the bombs his old man used to flog, deep down he is a bit dodgy and unreliable.

Yeah he is shifty as. Not genuine at all.

But if Melbourne want him for this role, that's their decision. A few posters underselling him as a player though, he was very good.

100% - in his peak years he was an absolute match winner.

Who kicks 10 goals in a final lol

He’s a stain of a human.

Get with your best friends missus and then claim mental health to escape the criticism, then come back after just enough time hoping people will forget.

He's near the top of the list of guys I wouldn't bother saying hello to if I happened to be standing next to him at a bar, but come on. There's worse things that a person can do. The heat he copped for that was ridiculous, with a sizable portion of it due to Mark Robinson and the Herald-Sun mistaking themselves for Women's Day and putting it on the front page.

Brownless consistently gave me the impression that his pain was in large part due to the hit to his ego as much as any heartbreak. When he decided to break his silence with "You're don't touch a man's wallet and you don't touch a man's woman" it was a great "Wow he didn't really just say that, did he?" moment.

I quite like Garry Lyon in the media. I don't really understand all the hate. He's not the most illuminating footy analyst around, but he's okay and he can string a few sentences together. For an ex-AFL player, he has a pretty good brain and a strong enough personality to stay employed by radio and TV stations after 20 years.

I see people labelling him as a "shit bloke" and making continual references to him hooking up with Nicky Brownless
  1. it's nobody's f**kin business. Who the hell is anyone on here to pass judgment on Lyon about this? It's between them.
  2. they've now been together for over 5 years, so they obviously love each other. Even more reason for everyone else to STFU
  3. people who do make judgmental cracks about Lyon over this reveal more about themselves than anyone else. Grade A cretins. Probably fans of JB & Billy weekdays on Triple M (at least, the ones at the lower end of the IQ scale who listen to that crap)

As for the OP about Lyon's prominence as the "Melbourne guy"... He works for Fox Footy and he is right there, the johnny-on-the-spot in Perth.
It would be no different if St Kilda was in the Grand Final and Nick Riewoldt was over there, or if it was the Brisbane Lions and Jonathan Brown.

Moreover, the league is historically notorious for boof-head womanizers! I could easily name half a dozen past high profile players and coaches, including a few Brownlow medalists, that make Garry Lyon's so-called indiscretion pale in comparison..!
Adulteress affairs, long term mistress's, illegitimate children and most of these players or coaches remained and/or are still with their wives..?

If social media was around during Jack Dyer or Ted Whitten's eras, I doubt the scribes of the day would even have time to write about actual football - and during the 80's and 90's, you were an exception to rule as a high profile player if you didn't have 'a bit on the side'...

Garry Lyon would be lucky to make the top 100 if you were listing former players with morally corrupt life choices. For example, I could be standing in bar next to Sam Newman or Wayne Johnston and casually drop a few names from their 'colourful off-field pasts' - and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be standing for much longer..!

I think Gary is ok …and good luck to him if Melbourne wins the cup … I say he should lap it up … he also saved a woman from a life sentence with that buffoon brownless … … the fall out from that was ridiculous … happens every day …. There are worst Footy media spokespersons than Lyon
