Science/Environment Gary Ablett disputes evolution

I find it offensive that a bloke who gave enough smack to a young girl to kill her has the gall to moralise about the " a very serious decline in morals and values in our community." Fair dinkum, what would Alisha Horan's parents and friends think of this hypocritical garbage.

Bingo. It's like Chopper delivering the sermon on the mount.

"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth when they harden the **** up"

You know, I think you might have the makings of a good comedy sketch here.

Thank you Mr Hawthorn fan. The "young girl" was an adult, right? She made a choice, just as many others have.

I do not condone Ablett's actions, but for you to put all the blame on him is completely narrow minded.

Hahaha what a joke. The Herald Sun is possibly the worst newspaper in the world. Except for the actual S*n.

It's also hardly surprising a man named God does not believe in evolution; but more surprising that a man named God can apparently know so little.

Perhaps you need a little refresher course:

Revealed: what took place in the hotel room
March 1 2003

Gary Ablett and Alisha Horan.

Gary Ablett explains what happened the night a 20-year-old fan died.

Gary Ablett empties the plastic bag of heroin onto the table in room 1265 at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Melbourne.

He lays out four or five lines - including a "big, long one" for himself - and rolls up a bank note to snort them with. At this moment, Alisha Horan comes out of the bathroom.

"Basically she caught me with it," says the former football champion. "She asked what it was. I didn't really want her knowing that it was what it was.

"And I told her it was cocaine. And she wanted some."

Ablett and Ms Horan, 20, an infatuated fan, are already "wasted" from a day and night-long binge of alcohol and ecstasy. He was, he says, drunk and tired and not thinking straight, but he didn't want Ms Horan to use heroin. "I only gave her a very tiny amount."

Afterwards, she sits on the bed while Ablett has "six or eight times" the amount she had consumed. Hours later she is dead.

This is the man now preaching morality to us in the newspaper. I-R-O-N-Y.

Oh No! Someone with different beliefs! Let's Belittle him because we are obviously superior to him! Har Har!

It was only what 500 years ago that creation was a fact and to suggest otherwise was stupid. A short amount of time, Maybe in 200 years aliens will show up, tell us that they had created the earth 70,000 years ago and tell us how stupid and blindsided we were to believe in evolution?

This Argument is just stupid, Incredibly stupid, and anyone who bickers or decides to try to argue is as ******ed as the whole debate and whoever is going to make snide comments at either side are just w***ers.

He can believe in whatever he wants to believe. It doesnt make him any less intelligent since the enviroment you grew up in has more to do with the evolution/creation argument then intelligence ever will.
Of course Ablett is entitled to believe whatever he wants.

My issue is with the Hun's decision to publish his views.

Next week: Brendan Fevola on global warming.

Absolutely agree.

I am baffled by their decision to run it.

Why the hell would they think that Ablett's views on this matter are authoritative enough to be published?

He just comes across as a village idiot.

Really? Its the Hun. Owned by Murdoch.

Already this thread is vindication for running it.

Its creating debate, noise, brou ha ha. It in itself becomes a story. The Hun gets mentioned more. More people buy the Hun. People talk about the Hun on radio. More people buy the Hun etc etc.

The public controversy about evolution only survives in the minds those who don't understand what it says or the abundant evidence that supports it.
OH GEEZ YOU GOT ME!!!

because you know, right now our technology is soo advanced that we couldnt never ever find any more evidence to either prove or disprove evolution could we? It's an Open and shut case, you know, Except that time we believed that god did it, but that will never ever happen again, we've truly learned our lesson and will never be proven wrong on anything again!

Again, I bet 500 years ago there was some guy chopping the heads of blokes who believed the earth was round saying the exact same thing/

Actually, she made a choice to snort cocaine because that's what Ablett told her the heroin was.

If he'd been honest and told her it was smack, she may have chosen differently.

And before you say it, yes Wayne Carey blah blah blah.

Future articles in the Herald Sun:

Brendon Fevola on privacy and the rights of women in a free society
Wayne Carey on the causes and effects of domestic violence
Matthew Stokes on the prevention of substance abuse among disaffected youth

I don't buy that logic.

I mean, if the Hun ran naked pictures of old ladies on every page, it would create debate and noise. Would that vindicate their decision? Surely criticism of their editorial policies, even if it generates attention, is not to be desired.

And even in a shit paper, surely someone has to meet a threshold of authority before their views get published. You don't just pull a celebrity in and get them to write about global politics or bioethics. Even in a shit paper, you don't expect to read the opinions of someone who, though well-known, doesn't really know anything about the subject they're expressing a view on. What is Gary Ablett's authority on the origin of the universe and the species?

You're kidding me right?

Anything Ablett says in Victoria is huge news.

If it is a bit wacky and out there, all the better.

This will shift units.

Pictures of naked old ladies wouldn't. It might create an outcry but it wouldn't shift units as people don't want to see that.

For the record, Gary Ablett's authority on the origin of the universe etc is every bit as valid as that of Archbishops etc who get printed in broadsheets too:

some bearded bloke who lives in the sky told him

Hey, delirious1, 500 years ago, the scientific method didn't exist. There is now a rigorous process by which people establish scientific facts/theories. "Well, people have been wrong before, you should believe what you want to believe" doesn't cut it anymore. If someone wants to argue against the scientific consensus about evolution, they'll need to provide a structured, coherent argument as to why the mountain of evidence of gradual evolutionary processes is insufficient/invalid, and provide evidence to support an alternative theory for the development of life.

In the mean time, please don't build any bridges, just in case you take issue with the idea of gravity.

You're kidding me right?

I think that's over-stating it.

His making a garbled argument for intelligent design is not "huge news".

And the other bizarre part is how badly written it is. Why did the Hun agree to run that unedited? It's almost as though they're trying to make him sound as nutty as possible.

For the record, Gary Ablett's authority on the origin of the universe etc is every bit as valid as that of Archbishops etc who get printed in broadsheets too.
Not really.

Archbishops are speaking as theologians. You could argue that doesn't mean anything, but that's ostensibly where their authority derives from.

On the topic Ablett speaks of, no-one really knows for certain what happened to create man. Aboriginies can talk about the dream time, Arabs can talk about Allah and Christians can talk about Jesus Christ. Its all just a game of Chinese whispers played over a period of time spanning 40,000+ years at the very minimum.

Everyone's beliefs are just as ridiculous and likely as the next persons. You can subscribe to a theory of a very intelligent person or belief what your parents brought you up to believe. In the end none of us will ever know and judging other peoples beliefs and slagging them off about it just divides people further.

For me, religious beliefs are something that help comfort an intelligent and largely insecure species, that need guidance and hope provided by something or someone larger than themselves. People seek comfort from religion as it helps them to create the best mindset for themselves that will get them through the journey of life and give them the best opportunity to be successful and happy.

One things for sure - ill never be one of these people who spends their whole life trying to get others to join their religion or take up their beliefs. Id rather just live for what it is, because you can question sh*t until your blue in the face but youll never be any closer to the real answer.

Peace :)

Science, based on evidence, is not "just as ridiculous" as a belief in God, based on guesswork and ignorance.

This kind of relativism borders on anti-intellectual. Sounds like something Sarah Palin would say.

If mankind had always taken that view, we'd still be hiding in caves afraid of the sun.

The story of mankind's advancement is the story of questioning stuff and trying to figure out answers.

If we just bailed on all of that, we'd never have put a man on the moon and we'd never have figured out DNA. In order to acquire knowledge and to expand our understanding of our environment and the natural order, man has been required to find answers through reason and evidence.

Gazza is pimping his latest crutch, no biggie. Next decade it will be buddhism or nihilism or back onto coke/smack/gear. The fact it is in the paper is shameful, but par for course these days. See Bingle/Clarke.

I don't understand why you bring the team I support into this argument. I didn't mention that the Cats had a drug culture, As it happens I don't to think that Stokes and Ablett's troubles with narcotics is a reflection on GFC at all.

At no stage did I put "all the blame " on Ablett. On the other hand the Coroner did state that Ablett was at least partially responsible for the young lady's death. Are you suggesting that the Coroner is completely *****ing narrow minded?

I don't have much of an issue with the Herald-sun running that article, afterall they gave a fair bit of print space to the Atheists convention. Although, If I was a creationist I would be pissed off that that Gary Ablett has made himself a spokeman, surely there are people who can make a better fist if intelligent design than him.

Big deal, they also tell us about celebs buying new houses and cats being rescued from drains, FLUFF pieces.

I did find the wording here a tad inapporpriate given his most infamous off field incident involved a death.

People know and remember me because of my success on the football field. People also know and remember me because of some of my off-field moments, which were not so successful.

Actually there's a bit of the old "Hi I'm Troy McClure" about that. "You might know me from such matches as the 89 premiership or from my run ins with pizza delivery guys".

Evolution is a fact as good as any we have got. Each new discovery since Darwin has confirmed it, including the whole new field of genetics. How likely is it that we will find evidence that might show continental drift wrong? The answer is zilch because of the abundant evidence written in the rocks. In the same way we can see the historic evidence for evolution in animal morphology, genes and fossil record.

If you think your cherished beliefs are in conflict with evolution you would do well to modify them, as have the Catholic Church.

Gary Ablett, a true hero on & off the field. Many said it would be scientifically impossible for a man of Ablett's size to fly so high, yet he proved the old paradigm that white men can't jump as false every weekend he put on the jumper.

Fantastic to see Gazza questioning conventional wisdom in an insightful and intriguing way. The man has defied the laws of nature time and time again, so I think you doubters would do well in taking his claim seriously.

Peter Daicos, through his feats with the ball, also challenged our understandings of physics so I'd like the HUN to get his take.
