Disputes, or defies?

comedy gold :D good work

Evolution is a fact as good as any we have got. Each new discovery since Darwin has confirmed it, including the whole new field of genetics. How likely is it that we will find evidence that might show continental drift wrong? The answer is zilch because of the abundant evidence written in the rocks. In the same way we can see the historic evidence for evolution in animal morphology, genes and fossil record.

If you think your cherished beliefs are in conflict with evolution you would do well to modify them, as have the Catholic Church.

Gee that's a great way to look at things. Evolution is fact because it's the best we can come up with.

Your Mixing up Theory and Fact.

Back 200 years ago Religion was fact because it was the best we could come up with, Now who's to say in 200 years we wont further progress and discover new evidence to either prove or disprove?

The Big bang is not a fact because "its the best we can come up with" Either, i cant emphasis how silly that statement is.

And WHEN in all of this have i said i DONT believe in evolution?

Delirious, I don't think that your position makes much sense. There's a quote from Asimov that sums this up nicely
[W]hen people thought the Earth was flat, they were wrong. When people thought the Earth was spherical they were wrong. But if you think that thinking the Earth is spherical is just as wrong as thinking the Earth is flat, then your view is wronger than both of them put together.

Now for some more depth. Do you believe that there is a reality which we inhabit and interact with? If you answer no to that, then there's not much discussion to be had. I'll continue on assuming that you do.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that you are saying that as any belief 'could' be true, it's reasonable to hold any belief. ie We 'could' all be in the matrix right now, noone can disprove that, so it is reasonable for me to believe this.

A problem with this belief is that is not consistent with the way that anyone who holds it goes about their life. If I shot a friend of yours, and claimed that they were an agent when I shot them (to continue with the matrix hypothesis), I doubt that you would say "Well I can't disprove that, so it's reasonable. You're free to go." Instead you wouldn't believe that unless I provided some positive evidence for it. The best form of evidence is in the form of a prediction that would not occur if the alternative hypothesis were true, but would occur if I was right. In this case something along the lines of "Watch me dodge bullets".

For evolution, there have been many such predictions, from "By constantly treating this bacteria with an antibiotic, it will develop resistance" to "The number of genetic differences between these two populations which diverged x years ago should be y" to "Species can only change incrementally, so large changes should take a long time".

Unless a new hypothesis explains these things and predicts stuff that evolution does not and is correct about these predictions, evolution remains the reasonable thing to believe.

Gary Ablett, a true hero on & off the field. Many said it would be scientifically impossible for a man of Ablett's size to fly so high, yet he proved the old paradigm that white men can't jump as false every weekend he put on the jumper.

Fantastic to see Gazza questioning conventional wisdom in an insightful and intriguing way. The man has defied the laws of nature time and time again, so I think you doubters would do well in taking his claim seriously.

Like Carey, always want to read what he has to say about footy. Like Carey, usually disregard what he has to say about virtually anything else.

So he admits he's no scientist then goes on to tell us that the science is wrong. Just embarrassing.

I couldn't be bothered reading it all, but if I recall the latest scientific beliefs correctly........Ablett is right, we didn't descend/evolve from apes, we share a common ancestor.

duh this is common knowledge.

I found the article profoundly interesting! Cheers to HUN for publishing it:thumbsu:

It highlights the moral superiority, bigotry, self elevated pretence created by the elitism of religion.

Instead of acknowledging that despite his much earlier conversion to religion he also THEN STILL failed badly demonstrating an act near the pinnacle of THE moral deparavity he condemns and laments! Without apology other than admitting "not so good successful " (actions).

It provides the evidence of the effect of brainwashing and acceptance of religious dogma and teaching.

Such that a man well known to be of very poor education and inability to even balance his own cheque book (see his biography) is lecturing on 10^300 mathematic probability and astronomical observations and its consequences

Then the audacity of challenging a PHD fellow& head of faculty of Oxford University on biology! on his very specialised subject. Presumably because.. his preacher and a non scientific ancient book tells him so!

Maybe it seems he believes the truly scientific  Genesis 1 account of creation? Where "God" creates plants and trees long before "it" created the SUN!?:o

For those interested just replace "Dr. Thaddeus " with "Gary Ablett Snr"

The Theologians Nightmare

By Bertrand Russell 1961

I think this short brilliant essay is very relevant, especially the punchline!;)

Actually we are apes. Even our ancestor only one generation back (our parents) were apes so it's entirely accurate to say we're decended from apes.

Yes, we are descended from what is for all intents and purposes, an ape. But not from modern apes.

Peter Daicos, through his feats with the ball, also challenged our understandings of physics so I'd like the HUN to get his take.
Daic's did nothing magical, he was just one of the first to study the physics of the oval shaped ball in any great detail. I'm sure you would have seen him running experiments at training on how the ball moved when being kicked in different places from different heights and at different angles to the surface with differing amounts of force.

He was even able to come up with a football with instructions how to do some of his feats from the notes he took.

Ablett goes into stuff like this a bit in his Icons of Australian Sport book as well. I've exercised my right as a secular humanist by reading those bits and disagreeing with most of what he's said.:thumbsu:

Seiously, he's every right to his views and I don't mind him trying to share them in a non-forceful way. I just can't agree with what he's saying. Hope he didn't drill his kids with it too much...

That evolution has happened is a scientific fact. There are several theories as to how it happened, the main one being the natural selection theory. As for your apparent radical scepticism, see Nasma’s excellent post.
