Science/Environment Gary Ablett disputes evolution

I'm an ex-fundamentalist Christian. Fundamentalists believe in a literal word of the Bible, including a 6x24 hour day creation 6000-10000 years ago. Now I'm an atheist free thinker.

The problem is Gary gets caught up with fundamentalist Churches hiding him away from reality. I don't have a problem with people going to church or having a belief, but when it comes to disputing WITHOUT ANY CREDENTIALS because their holy book written by bronze aged goat herders disagrees that's where I feel I have to speak up.

How god damn arrogant are people to try dribble bullshit by claming evolution never happened etc. Different scientific from their research including geology, biology, archaeology, astronomy all agree on the scientific results of the age of the earth, the universe and the time when the early humans became bi-pedal primates.

It's extremely arrogant to deny years and years of research, time, effort. Claiming a DEVILS CONSPIRACY just because their f****** bible says otherwise.

I like how pieces like this always say "I'm not a scientist, but..." or "I'm no expert, but..." as though that somehow gives them more credibility.

Talk about a decline in society.

When people started talking like this in the past, they were treated with compassion and rescued from the cult that got its hooks into them.

Now it seems we put them in the paper.

Today, our newspapers, televisions and computer screens are full of shocking and horrible crimes, detailing a very serious decline in morals and values in our community.

This would be the decline in morals and values that has seen major crime decrease decade by decade?

For instance, recent ABS stats:

In 2008, the Australian victimisation rates for selected personal offence categories were:

* Murder, 1.2 victims per 100,000 persons, no change from 1.2 victims in 2007 (Down from 1.57 in 2000)
* Attempted murder, 1.1 victims per 100,000 persons, down from 1.2 victims in 2007
* Kidnapping/abduction, 3.7 victims per 100,000 persons, up from 3.5 victims in 2007 (Perhaps religious cults are getting more bold?)
* Robbery, 77.2 victims per 100,000 persons, down from 85.6 victims in 2007
* Blackmail/extortion, 2.0 victims per 100,000 persons, no change from 2.0 victims in 2007 (table 2.1)

Where is this shocking increase Gary?

In fact from what I can see we're in a bit of a lull for crime. I think I know why:

However, over recent years we have shifted further and further away from the inclusion of anything godly in our planning, decision-making and policy-setting

So he can never have an opinion again because he's made mistakes in his life?

Cool :thumbsu: He is wrong, there's nothing wrong with humanity at all.

I thank Gary and the Herald Sun for this powerful article. Our society is spiralling out of control, and at last someone has had the courage to speak the truth about why peanut butter doesn't mutate into new species.

It's hilarious isn't it? :D

I really can't read all of this in one go. Embarrassment (and slight boredom) mean I have to keep flicking to another screen
The very reason food is sealed is to keep information out, it's only if and when the seal is broken that a contamination can occur because information has got inside the jar!
Gahh!!! Information!!! Get it off me!!!

LOL.
I really wonder where Gaz gets his info?
I was so shattered to discover that the rise of life on this planet hinged on the correct handling of a condiment.
But it begs the question...who created this condiment which has such a pivotal role in the development of life as we know it?
The only answer I can come up with is God. Who else could not only created the bush which grew the first peanut, but a mechanism which brings about the spontaneous coming into existence of glass jars and lids?

God might is obviously on a par with Gaz's understanding of the theory of evolution.

How terribly embarrassing he has become.
A poster child for the education of AFL footballers so they can at least be valuable members of society after their sporting prowess has waned.

LOL.

If you look at the quality of churches he attends, then you'd know. They're fundamentalist churches. You know what they're like in exaggerating claims? I should know I used to be a fundie:spade:

Can you explain something to me?

What were you thinking when you were a fundamentalist Christian? How did you ever believe that? What kind of leaps of logic are required to swallow all that?

I mean, did you then just wake up one day and decide that you cared about evidence and common sense?

The angry reaction one man gets from voicing his opinion about society is, frankly staggering.

Sure some stuff man be extreme but it's not much worse than the leftist scare tactic green drivel you read in all Newspapers, esp The Age.

It's an opinion piece, no need to go ape sh!t over it.

I'm all for him expressing his opinion, whether I agree with it or not. I just wish it was his opinion and not something he cut and pasted :(

Scientific fact is an oxymoron.

No Science is 'fact' just theory. Hence why Relativity isnt the 'fact' of relativity, and Gravity isnt the 'fact' of gravity. Both theories, both impossible (according to the scientific method) to ever be proven as 'facts.'

All Science must retain the element of falsifiability (the ability to be proven wrong at any time).

Ergo, and logically, science can never be 100% 'fact.' Its impossible. Any scientist will tell you this.

Intrestingly the belief that a universe exists at all can only be accepted on faith. You can never be sure it really exists at all, or in what form (Cogito ergo sum).

Even though I personally discount creationism as about as credible as any other fairy tale, those in this thread that seek to discount faith as a vauluable (and indeed neccessary) cogonative device are both very foolish and very naive.

My only real critique of Ablett in this peice is where he claims society has become devalued. From a former (admitted) druggie who was clearly implicated in the death of a groupie by the coroner, this is a bit rich for him to claim.

I guess he's reformed now though. Still reeks of hypocricy.

It takes some talent for that. Thought it impossible to plagiarize the bible anyway? JW's take what suits them and run with it.

I can't see any kind of religion as a necessity. This seems to be a common "call" though.
Any evidence at all that it is necessary?
