Yeah never did unfortunately :'( GAJ is the GOAT for me but never saw Ablett Snr or Carey play (seen highlights of course).
Ive seen both... and GAJ is just brilliant....

GAS has him covered.

An entirely different breed. Not a slight on GAJ, more applause for GAS.

Onya Little Gaz! Glad someone else posted up the "Cometh the moment, cometh the man" goal in the 2007 prelim (Collingwood seems to have been our most consistent opponent during our 2007-2011 run - 2007 prelim, 2009 NAB Grand Final, 2009 prelim, 2010 prelim, 2011 Grand Final).

Saved me the effort!

Very difficult to compare era's and players... watching highlights of GAsr in his 150'th game V WC ..it gave one an insight into him playing as a midfield player.. I could probably say Jr had him covered in that role.. but with Sr it was the total package.
There were guys who could kick as far as him , maybe on both feet , run as fast , hit as hard , jump as high , mark as well... but very few if any had the package. They call Stringer the package , its really just empty shell with brown paper bag on it.. Sr was the real package. And the physical side to him , to most of the greats should not be underestimated. He actually ruined players. I don't think Johnson was ever the same after Ablet went thru him like the Indian Pacific at max speed. Sr was superior overhead as well , there was time in 84,85 that he was taking Howe type marks most weeks when playing on the wing. He was picked for the state after 6-8 games of footy and kicked 8 goals V WA. It was like watching Roy Hobbs play footy.

I think Stringer's copped 'The Package' more because a brown paper package is tied up with string rather than the opinion of his all-rounder skills.

Either that or he has a really big penis.

Gary Snr was something else entirely. Had speed, brute power, was equally adept on the left or right foot and could roost it 60+. Sublimely marking skills either on the ground or in the air and his physical prowess was unmatched.

He was the complete package.

The greatest player this game has ever seen and comfortably.

Gaz Snr and Carey both had an aura when they played.. I felt fear when playing North and Carey.
But T McGrath always had Careys number just like Lonergan at his best has Franklin. I remember one day at KP when the commentators who were in love with Carey were shouting " and Careys got the ball and he is racing down the field" (or something like that) . Only problem was that McGrath had the ball and was going in the opposite direction And if Ayres had put McGrath on Carey in that 1997 Q final we would have won and not been in Adelaide the next week.

And I think that is the one thing that separates him.

Not saying that its the best thing he brought, but that ability to be uniquely spectacular one moment, a devastating and oft concussing wrecking ball the next
and then use that hulk like strength and mass to then enable the brilliance to flow just put him in a different league.

Ive seen skills, ive seen brute strength..but that combo to put it all together left you each week wondering when it was going to happen.

And again, its not a slight in GAJ. He has the same attributes IMO just not the same level... but damn its close.

We are all so fortunate to have been graced by his brilliance. May he and or nathan bring us another generation before we drop away.

G Farmer
3. G Ablett jnr
4.
C Enright

That's a tough call LMcCarthy. I did not see much of Polly but saw a lot of GAS.

Personally I think Buddha is up there in the top few, but who do you leave out. Might be a good (repeat) thread.

Wadie was always my favourite back in the (wayback) day. Met him a few years ago via business and he was such an awesome guy to deal with. I told him he was my hero as a kid and he got all shy one me.

Anyone who has not seen GAS should watch the highlights of that state game on youtube

McGrath didnt have Carey's number. Not even close.

Go and rewatch the 1994 prelim if you think McGrath had Carey's number. It is actually a very good excuse to rewatch that fantastic game. Might do it myself.

Both those guys are definitely in my top 10. We could do with both of them right now.
Polly was a game changer.
Ablett snr had every thing the game asks for
Junior for me doesnt come near those two regardless of his genius.
Buddha was a toss up for me for top 5.
Wade was my hero along with Polly as a kid.

They probably come out even over the journey.
