Very difficult to compare era's and players... watching highlights of GAsr in his 150'th game V WC ..it gave one an insight into him playing as a midfield player.. I could probably say Jr had him covered in that role.. but with Sr it was the total package.Yeah never did unfortunatelyGAJ is the GOAT for me but never saw Ablett Snr or Carey play (seen highlights of course).
They call Stringer the package , its really just empty shell with brown paper bag on it...

GAS has him covered.
An entirely different breed. Not a slight on GAJ, more applause for GAS.
GO Catters
Gary Snr was something else entirely. Had speed, brute power, was equally adept on the left or right foot and could roost it 60+. Sublimely marking skills either on the ground or in the air and his physical prowess was unmatched.Yeah never did unfortunatelyGAJ is the GOAT for me but never saw Ablett Snr or Carey play (seen highlights of course).
But T McGrath always had Careys number just like Lonergan at his best has Franklin. I remember one day at KP when the commentators who were in love with Carey were shouting " and Careys got the ball and he is racing down the field" (or something like that) . Only problem was that McGrath had the ball and was going in the opposite direction And if Ayres had put McGrath on Carey in that 1997 Q final we would have won and not been in Adelaide the next week.Gaz Snr and Carey both had an aura when they played.. I felt fear when playing North and Carey.
There's plenty of YouTube footage of him. Like his dropped mark of the centuryI missed out![]()

He was the complete package.
The greatest player this game has ever seen and comfortably.
That's a tough call LMcCarthy. I did not see much of Polly but saw a lot of GAS.We are all so fortunate to have been graced by his brilliance. May he and or nathan bring us another generation before we drop away.
Best geelong players of my memory
1. G Ablett snr
2. G Farmer
3. G Ablett jnr
4. C Enright
5. M Scarlett
Nor me. The AFL threw millions at him. What is he going to do with the rest of his family in the shit? There are plenty of people on here who have a deep seeded hate for him due to his defection, im not one of them myself.
Both better IMHO, not by muchYeah never did unfortunatelyGAJ is the GOAT for me but never saw Ablett Snr or Carey play (seen highlights of course).
Anyone who has not seen GAS should watch the highlights of that state game on youtubeVery difficult to compare era's and players... watching highlights of GAsr in his 150'th game V WC ..it gave one an insight into him playing as a midfield player.. I could probably say Jr had him covered in that role.. but with Sr it was the total package.
There were guys who could kick as far as him , maybe on both feet , run as fast , hit as hard , jump as high , mark as well... but very few if any had the package. They call Stringer the package , its really just empty shell with brown paper bag on it.. Sr was the real package. And the physical side to him , to most of the greats should not be underestimated. He actually ruined players. I don't think Johnson was ever the same after Ablet went thru him like the Indian Pacific at max speed. Sr was superior overhead as well , there was time in 84,85 that he was taking Howe type marks most weeks when playing on the wing. He was picked for the state after 6-8 games of footy and kicked 8 goals V WA. It was like watching Roy Hobbs play footy.
Not really close to my top 5What about Stevie johnson?

McGrath didnt have Carey's number. Not even close. But T McGrath always had Careys number just like Lonergan at his best has Franklin. Both those guys are definitely in my top 10. We could do with both of them right now. That's a tough call LMcCarthy. I did not see much of Polly but saw a lot of GAS.
Personally I think Buddha is up there in the top few, but who do you leave out. Might be a good (repeat) thread.
Wadie was always my favourite back in the (wayback) day. Met him a few years ago via business and he was such an awesome guy to deal with. I told him he was my hero as a kid and he got all shy one me.
They probably come out even over the journey.McGrath didnt have Carey's number. Not even close.
Go and rewatch the 1994 prelim if you think McGrath had Carey's number. It is actually a very good excuse to rewatch that fantastic game. Might do it myself.
Watch this;Yeah never did unfortunatelyGAJ is the GOAT for me but never saw Ablett Snr or Carey play (seen highlights of course).
Fair call but he'd be up there imo.Not really close to my top 5
