Re: Respect for Gazza....

No I haven't lost any respect. My heart breaks for him, choosing between the team he loves and an AFL monied team that offers him a pay package because he is the best player going around.
So you wouldn't take a new job if you were offered a pay increase? Rubbish. Your family, friends and colleagues would say well done when you did, you deserve it. Why do footballers have to carry our emotional feelings about the game on their backs.
We love him, he will always be ours and we wish him well.

How long does one take to make a decision, and how much must the other players accept a pay slash while one makes up his mind?

In a situation where others were losing potential earnings while they waited for my decision, I would hasten my verdict out of respect for them.

That's precisely the feeling that I am talking about...I feel it drifting away. One good friend of mine is alredy saying "good riddance" about this. Will the good will turn sour for others?

The fact that he's taking so long to decide makes me think he is staying. How many people do you see get millions of dollars thrown at them, and not take the cash as soon as it's offered? To quote from a Scribe song, not many, if any. That fact alone suggests to me he's staying.

I know people have suggested he decided long ago he's heading north, but look at what has happened over the last six weeks or so. Selwood re-signed with Geelong, and the Gold Coast then upped the ante on Ablett. Why would they increase their offer later on down the track if they'd already landed their man?

I know people think having Nathan up there is a good lure to try and attract Gaz. As others have said, it's no certainty that Nathan will stay there. You just need to look at his track history to see that. Here's a guy who walked off during a game for Modewarre because he saw a journo and cameraman turn up. Here's a guy who said he'd lost passion for AFL football because he didn't like to be in the limelight. Here's a guy who went missing during a pre-match warm-up for Southport, and was found having a swim in the pool next door. Here's a guy who walked out on a building apprenticeship about a year into it. To say Nathan is not reliable is an understatement. Besides, he's not exactly setting the world on fire in the VFL at the moment. I think he's kicked 2 goals in 6-7 games playing at full forward. Who's to say the Gold Coast will keep him on the list past this year? Judging by his performances thus far this year, I know I wouldn't be.

You talk about others potentially losing earnings while Gary's busy weighing up his options, but I've heard that Selwood has an "Ablett" clause in his contract, in that if Gaz does go, Selwood would get some extra money. Don't know if that's true or not, but it does sound plausible.

I still have the utmost respect for Gaz, but he painted himself into a corner before the season started when he said he only plays to be in premiership sides, and Bomber rightfully picked him up on it IMO. If he stays, he's a man of his word, as our side is still strong enough to contest again next year, and maybe even the year after. If he goes, then he's obviously after the money, as I can't see the Gold Coast being in premiership contention in the 5-6 years he'll be there.

Really? I think you're reaching a little there.

Sure, that's possible I guess. But the point is, the alternative makes a hell of a lot more sense. There are few 'facts' we are privy to, but the facts we have, make a much more compelling case for him leaving than staying.

If we all accept for a second that he is definitely going (I have), then him delaying negotiations until the end of the year, suddenly makes more sense in that context. Come the end of the year, he can simply say thanks but no thanks and leave. Thus saving himself the awkward situation of being the first player contracted to one side, while playing for another.

On the other hand, if we accept he's staying, then it's difficult to reconcile his decision to delay the talks. There is very little to be gained for either him or the club.

My personal opinion is that he IS under contract @ the GC, whether that be conventional, verbal, or an 'understanding'.... And that contract has some type of confidentiality clause, creating the situation where he is unable to tell Geelong that he is actually leaving.

The big problem I have with this, is that Ablett & Pickering have agreed to/created a situation that requires actively lying to Geelong. I've said this before, but by saying negotiations have been put off, suggests there is something to negotiate. And if we accept he's definitely leaving, then that's a lie.

I want Gary to stay and was hopeful that he would. But now the only logical argument is one that suggests he's leaving.:(

Re: Respect for Gazza....

I don't think money is a huge factor because he will obviously get paid very well if he stays, plus he's playing in one the greatest sides of all time; Why would you want to go and play for a club that's going to be terrible for the rest of Abletts Career, just for a bit of extra money?

I think FAMILY is the main reason why he is undecided.

If Ablett decides to leave, I will have no ill feel towards him; Nathan however, who I think misses his older brother cause he's a little bitch, will not get off so easily:thumbsd:

This should be a sticky.

Re: Respect for Gazza....

i'll lose respect for him if and when he announces the decision to leave. although the chance of him staying seems to get smaller every day. i remember the disdain for leigh colbert when he walked out on us, and i don't think ablett leaving should be treated any differently

until then, he has a contract that expires on a certain date and has every right to use that time to make a decision

should he be left out of the team? or course not. we want another premiership. there would also be legal ramifications of that. andrew lovett is trying to sue because he can't apply his trade and he's a guy who is facing criminal action. i don't think he has a case, but if gary ablett wants to switch clubs in a manner that is lawful in society and lawful in the rules of the AFL, we can't drop him for that

Re: Respect for Gazza....

Probably Signed up, Took the free Holiday, GONE.... :thumbsd:

If this is true, and he and Pickering are lying... He deserves NO RESPECT

They, and the GC,are not allowed to reveal if they've signed. The AFL need to fix that rule as we're going to have this same crap next year with GWS.

Agreed....there either should be no loophole to sign 12 months early, or it should be announced (I prefer the former because I don't like the way they do the latter in the NRL)...in an age of 24 hour media stauration coverage, this halfway house simply gives jurnos so much to prognosticate about, without being accountable (because of course if no one can reveal anything, then they can't be shown to be wrong) and just creates a circus. Should be changed for next year so no other club has to go through it.

Gary is well liked and respected by his teammates, whatever BS the media try to paint. Note how the guys were bouncing off Adam Selwood to free Gary up, and Cory will probably miss a week taking Adam out (again to free Gary up). And when put his body on the line and took out those two WEagles, lots of his team mates went up to him.

The Geelong football Team have their eyes on September and this GC BS doesn't seem to be affecting them. (maybe we should follow their lead!)

Gary is a gun, even on an 'off' night like last night, is worst is much better than many player's best.:thumbsu:

On a different note, I quite like the cut of Adam Selwood's jib! What chance him coming over to play with Joel when Linga retires?

Ablett is a once-in-a-generation player.... and we've been fortunate enough to have had two of them.
I think Junior owes us nothing and he has handled himself honourably - keeping his mouth tightly closed as is required of him, in spite of the storm of comment that continually surrounds him. We'd all like the answer to be in the affirmative, but recent events make me suspect it may not be.
Hoody and Winty have obviously thought a lot about it, too, and (with many others) offered some worthy ideas about Junior.
Stay or go, he has been a delight to watch in the hoops. And I concur with Hoody - he ranks at least alongside Farmer, Gaz, Davis and Goggin, et al. All different, all special and always recalled with a glow of pride and satisfaction that we had them - if only for what seems a brief, shining moment.

Great post corio bay and well said , he is pure joy to watch. We should just sit back and enjoy the ride with him.

I wonder if Bomber has a sneaking suspicion he's gone, and as a result is playing Gaz forward a lot more than usual, knowing full well that Gaz hates playing there.

I thought that on Saturday night.
Swap roles with Chapman and voila...Chappy BOG with 36 possessions!
Maybe a message from Bomber to Gaz that he's not the only superstar in the side?
GAJ is far and away the best player in the AFL, but GFC has "allowed" him to become that by careful nurturing and incredible protection from other MF players who create space for him to work in.
Life would be infinitely tougher at GC.
I still am hopeful that when the decision is finally made it will be in our favour.
It is one thing to entertain such a life changing move, but it is another thing completely to actually do it.

Gary is between a rock and hard place really.

From a team perspective, if he goes he'll be derided as disloyal and money hungry, and if he stays for about half what he's worth it still might be enough to shunt one or two good players (like James Kelly perhaps) out of the club for salary cap reasons.

On a personal note, he can't go wrong. He'll either stay and have continued on-field success or go and earn a salary commensurate with his true value.

Having said all that, he needs to come clean with Thompson. Their relationship is threatening to spiral downwards. Gary was behaving like a drama queen on Saturday against the Eagles and it doesn't do him any justice. He's too good a player and person for it to come to all that.

Maybe a toast the Geelong Football Club thread would have been the shot. You know, for all the club has done for him over the years and how well they've coped with the frustration of a player who won't declare after eight months what his intentions are. Maybe!;)

Yep the club has been very good at tippy toeing around the Abletts! ;)

The fact of the matter is that something's gotta give. The pressure the media are putting on the Ablett story combined with his on field antics Saturday which has led to greater media pressure means that sooner or later, like it did with Aker, something's gotta give.

I am now expecting something to blow up well before the end of the season. This can't go on until then I suspect. I hope and pray that nothing implodes the team, but sports being sports, it could happen.
