Time for the thread title to be changed too. He's now outright leader.

The greatest midfielder ever.
Pendlebury and selwood are zero chance of getting anywhere near ablett. Danger is an outside chance.FYI, the updated list. In real / adjusted terms, Ablett is 29.5 votes ahead of Dempsey. Of the current crop, only Selwood, Dangerfield and Pendelebury are an outside chance to surpass Ablett. Dusty Martin is on 153 votes.

Pendles and Danger have both broken into the top 10 all time now. Ablett has cracked 260 which seems massive but Dangerfield is still just 29 years old so you could easily argue he's a big chance to overtake Ablett by the end of his career. Pendles and Selwood are both 31yo now and are probably too far behind to catch Ablett. Still unbelievable to think 3 of the top 8 Brownlow vote getters of all time played in the same team this year.Pendlebury and selwood are zero chance of getting anywhere near ablett. I find it boring also. They should have a bunch of awards -The umps turned the Brownlow into a joke by just chucking 3 votes everytime a big name mid has an ok game
I find it boring also. They should have a bunch of awards -
Most effective possessions
Fairest player (least amount of whinging, throwing arms out)
Best shut down of opposition star
Most electrifying half back play maker etc etc
Each individual still only has 22 games a season in which to poll.Saw it pointed out that there are also a lot more games now with the extra teams. So there is more votes going around as well

It sort of matters though - they still play the same amount of games but a lot more players are playing that many games. Plus they are playing against each other less often (less double ups). I'm pretty sure the averages for the top 5 or so place-getters is higher than it was 10-20 years agoEach individual still only has 22 games a season in which to poll.
To get so many votes/get so close but never win it - Selwood is the St Kilda of players. At least he has 3 flags.
Like Buddha Hocking minus the 3 flags. To get so many votes/get so close but never win it - Selwood is the St Kilda of players. At least he has 3 flags.
Fyfe and Martin are young enough to end up sitting 1/2 at the completion of their careersJust in case anyone is wondering, here's the updated top 10 list:
Active players in bold above. It's worth mentioning Dustin Martin (16th/176 votes), Nat Fyfe (18th/174 votes) and Lance Franklin (20th/170 votes) are also players which sit in the top 20 all-time Brownlow votes getters. It's probably fair to suggest 29-year-old Dangerfield is going to eventually break Gary Ablett Jr's Brownlow vote record given Gary will be retiring this year and Danger really only needs 2-3 more good seasons to catch him and he isn't even 30 yet.
- Gary Ablett Jr (Gee/GC) - 261 votes
- Gary Dempsey (WB/NM) - 246 votes
- Sam Mitchell (Haw/WC) - 227 votes
- Robert Harvey (StK) - 215 votes
- Chris Judd (WC/Car) - 210 votes
- Patrick Dangerfield (Ade/Gee) - 209 votes
- Leigh Matthews (Haw) - 202 votes
- Joel Selwood (Gee) - 198 votes
- Scott Pendlebury (Col) - 194 votes
- Brent Harvey (NM) - 191 votes
To be fair he said ‘equal or better’. I think Selwood sits about equal with Mitchell, Black etc. He’s been very consistent and had a few years where he was a consistent match winner, especially in crucial stages of big games. Reckon he’s underrated by many because he’s a bit of a flog and DuckwoodHaha bullshit. Not a single non geelong supporter would come close to agreeing with you.
Brent Harvey and Dane Swan are the only 2 you could argue. However Swan at his best was unstoppable and put up 40+ disposal games with goals.
Selwood doesn't even deserve to be mentioned alongside Sam Mitchell Simon Black Rob Harvey.
Judd was the best in the game for a few seasons. Selwood has arguably never been top 10 in his career for a single season
