The man is an enigma. I must have seen him kick 500 goals with the games I saw him play. I was there at KP when he kicked his 1000th goal (twice) and saw him kick 3 of his tonnes.

I lived near Geelong as a kid and saw him train a hell of a lot. I can't agree that the guy wasn't a hard trainer. He inspired me to play great footy from his training more than his game day brilliance.

Don't compare him to Carey, Judd, Matthews etc. They are all legends of the game and it is a disservice to all of them to compare.

I know that I love footy so much becuase I loved Gary so much as a kid. All I want every time I go or watch each game of footy is to be in awe as much as I was when Gary Senior was on the ground. It was the only time I really believed in magic.

Thanx Gary!
Maybe confused? If you're talking about when everyone ran on after he just missed, that was actually for his 100th against Sydney in 1995. Or did it happen both times?

Gaz played 6 games and kicked 9 goals for Hawthorn, so he would have had the milestone of 1000 career goals, and 1000 goals for the Catters.

So technically he would have had two 'serves' of 1000 goal celebrations. I tell you what, i would be most surprised if anyone...(Maybe Tomahawk in 12 years) will ever achieve that feat for the Cats again.

As mentioned by many before, watching Gary Sr was a joy that any Cats fan aged between say late teens onwards would cherish for life. For me seeing the whole journey, as others in their late 30's could also say, it was just awesome. Truly he brought people to the grounds to watch him, and he gave Geelong the club and the city, an exposure and profile undreamed of by late 70's early 80's standards.

Now you have me thinking. I was sure it happened against Freo for the 1000th. I was at that Sydney game as well. Come to think of it, you maybe right. My bad.

Ablett more was than just the freak who rarely trained but delivered weekly.

He was a player who loved football as a kid, and developed his skills by playing almost daily with his brothers, father and uncles etc. As he grew up, his passion for football was still alight, his desire to step into the unknown of the city was not his utmost priority. However, when he accepted the terrritory, he trained harder than what people think, and delivered some of the greatest efforts seen by a sportsmen.

He had exceptional pace, brute strength, magnificent skills and awareness, as well as the ability to entertain the crowd - qualities that all cannot be god-given.

He is the best footballer to ever play. Easily.

That is my take, anyway.

Sorry but I saw both Ablett and Polly Farmer play and I have to say Polly was THE BEST EVER. It was very rare he was beaten and if he was down he just worked harder. He changed the game for ever with his attacking handball. He inspired all his team mates with his talent and ability.

Gazza was great but Polly won a flag for us and it should have been more.

Way too much emphasis is placed on the fact that certain players have won Premierships. Ablett is the best player to ever play the game, and obviously becomes the best player not to win a Premiership. Although superstars in their own right, players such as Michael Voss do not even come close to Ablett - even if they have won a handful of Premiership medals.

In forty years watching a lot of sport I've seen four blokes I consider freaks in their various sports.
Shane Warne
Michael Jordan
Edwin Moses
And...
Ablett.

I feel privileged to have seen them.

Farmer must have been a brilliant player, but let's keep things in perspective. He only played 101 games for Geelong. Roughly 5 years' worth. Ablett played 242 games for Geelong and was there 13 years. Performing at the same standard for almost 3 times the duration must count for something.

Two elite stars. It's not like comparing them to, pfft, Tony Modra. :D

Ablett might have played longer however Polly wasn't just a great player he was an inspiration to his team mates. He lifted them up when they were down and truley led them, he was team captain for most of his time at the club. He came to Geelong very late in his career imagine how great he would have been if he came to us at 20.

Polly not only won a Flag but he changed the game for ever. Ablett was a great football and I loved watching him play but for me Polly is number one allways. Read his biography and wonder how he could have been such a marvel. Lok at the old footage and see him hit a running player on the chest from 30 meters with a handball.

Truly amazing.

I am the cult leader of my own Gary Ablett Sr. That guy was my hero growing up. As far as I was concerned what he did on the footy field was the equivalent of walking on water. As a young kid following Geelong through the late 80s and early 90s, my life was a roller coaster ride, and Ablett Sr. led the way. My bookshelf is full of Gary Ablett biographies. He is more than a man. He is God.

Let us fall down and give praise unto the God Of Football. :D

Comments on the money. I saw the great man at Subiaco in, I think from memory, Rd 4 1992 (yes, that year!) where he played up the ground for 36 touches and 6 goals. We were up by 10 goals early in the last qtr before the breakes went on and pulled up to win by 4. SUBLIME!

Football is turning into basketball, probably as a result of digital technology making possible the kind of statistical analysis that kills creative play. Players wearing GPS for gawssakes.

Yes, stats do suck.

It doesn't matter about the touches, but how the ball is used.

I reckon there was a bit of Gary snr in tonights score against the tiges...He always enjoyed playing against Richmond....Interesting to see young Nathan mention the same to Colby in post match interview on Fox

I know that song. I taped it but mum taped over it at the time. I was shattered. I'd love to have that song and the footage that went with it again.

I remember these lines:

"It must be the game of the gods, when a man can leap for the sky"

"I want to ask you something, I want you to make the call - are we seeing today, the greatest of them all?"
By the biggest coincidence, I happened to stumble upon this today.

I have seen Farmer (superstar} and all the other stars mentioned on this thread.
However, an earlier comment rings true to me.
It suggested that you could almost hear the crowd hold it's breath when the ball was anywhere near him.
That is exactly what it was like when the guy was at his peak.
That peak lasted for quite a while.
Many of us have seen many great players, but how many of them could consistently take your breath away?

hey cat fans, and yes this thread is about the great Gary Ablett.. I used to love watching the big guy play, probly why i chose geelong as my team.. i think i was about 11 when he retired.. but anyway, because i was that small, i never used to know about his training and all that. And i had recently heard from a good source that he never used to train as much as the other players, because he was just a freak, and just used to kill the rest of the team in 100m sprints and all that. And when they would go to the gym for a work out, he did everything with ease, and his teammates used to just think he was abnormal, probly why he was the greatest player to ever play AFL..
Best player I ever saw. People talk about the hawks stuffing up with the judd draft but god imagine how good the hawks would of been with ablett. Top bloke to boot forgetting about his recent problems
