and we shouldn't be catering for a shit for brains footballer.
Football excellence should be the only criterion; entry should not be refused for ulterior motives (such as fear of bad publicity) using the excuse of some nebulous concept such as "character" or "integrity" or "sportsmanship*" when it is applied to one player and not to others who have already been admitted.

* Leigh Matthews, anyone?

you're joking right, there have been many on field incidents like Leigh Matthews but he's the only one to be charged, something I have a problem getting my head around, and here you are wanting him out but Ablett in.

Never said I wanted him out (and you must be kiddingb if you are suggesting bthat incident was the only case which called his "sportsmanship" into question).

It's simply a case of the integrity of the selection process; apply the 3 optional criteria equally to all or none, don't use them selectively as a transparent excuse to rule out one player simply for fear of bad publicity.

Can't wait to hear the mental convolutions when and if they delay GAJ's admission; the twisting and pretzel logic will be even more interesting if they admit him before his father.

He's the best player I've seen and I hope - and believe - he will one day be a Legend. However, when the calls are close and there are limitations placed on the numbers to be elevated it's understandable that other matters - rightly or wrongly - come into play.

Playing the Devil's Advocate, he has lapsed more than once when it comes to adherence to his faith. And to the best of my knowledge he hasn't really warmed the cockles of the hearts of those who decide by 'putting back' in football terms. Seem to recall the Cats offering him mentoring and community roles early on and him rejecting them.
All fair points. But he retired before Carey, and since retirement they have both erred. Both should be legends, Ablett ahead chronologically on all grounds.

Maybe what-ifs can come into it here, while we are discussing incidents and charges.
What if Lethal's punch was a centimetre or 2 higher and hit Bruns in the temple- he would have been killed? That's what his facio-maxillary surgeon told him and the media.
What if Alicia Horan had also survived the cocktail of drugs they both took?

Alicia's parents think the AFL are doing the right thing, would like to see how you viewed it if it was your daughter.
Again, Ablett was not guilty of murder in this case. It is a horrendous thought losing a child- I have 2 adult daughters and you always worry about their health and welfare - but they were in it together. Who knows why...If Ablett was a recurrent drug dealer, user, offender... but, he isn't

Absolutely horrible to see any young life snuffed out for any reason, and the family would have been devastated, they'd probably have blamed them selves,Ablett and maybe even others who knows, but the one thing that is missing here is personal responsibility by Alisha,we are all first and foremost answerable for our own actions as adults.

Yeah and if my aunty had balls she'd be my uncle.

He is no longer a footballer. He is not getting any legend status for his brains, but for his contribution to football. He has stuffed up big time, but is paying his penance life-long. Doesn't need your assessment of the status of his intellect.
In reality, his intellect as a footballer was uncanny. What he has done since, only he and his family know. he was certainly not the first or last player to have dealt with mental health and drug usage issues. Whether you ever forgive him or not, the important issues are what he is doing now to stay clean.

Only a few Geelong supporters see like you do, the people that matter see it differently and that's why he hasn't got legend status.

You have made up your mind and that's it.
He may well be a turd of a bloke, who knows, but he has taken responsibility for his actions

Matter of time.
Time dilutes many things.
Not the greatness of his feats as a footballer though.
Let me pose this hypothetical- with all we know about GAS, do you think Frank Costa would say he would still have supported recruiting him if he had his time over? Would you?

She was barely out of her teens and someone who'd led a sheltered life. Senor was twice her age with much more experience. The coroner even went so far as to tell him to grow up. To place the blame squarely at her feet is an example of blind loyalty.

Back to the issue of legend selection. A superbly talented player but a selfish one. Both on and off the field. To suggest the selection committee will turn a blind eye to his behaviour when there are restrictions on the numbers to be elevated and close calls are to be made is naive. It may be an argument. However I tried to move to utopia but couldn't find the passport.

I somehow think some people here are way more preoccupied with Senior becoming a legend than the man himself.

I take offence at that re. bias because he's Gary Ablett. My opinion on drugs is a very simple one- its a huge risk that you take every time you take them and I have very little sympathy for those who overdose (and no i am not a hypocrite- never taken an illegal drug in my life). Gary himself is lucky af he didnt die as well.

/please note i have sympathy for people with drug addiction and they should have access to all the help they want/need.

Tbh, I never think about this til reading the posts on this thread. He would be pretty honoured- who wouldn't, but also possible he would not show up.
Something to talk about during preseason.

Very good points. Gary was lucky he did not also die--I wonder what this thread would be like if he had.. And if Alicia had also survived. These are possibilities because as you say, those who dabble with drugs take massive risks. We all know of those people who have described the bliss of some ICE usage, and on other occasions, death or near death because of what is in the ICE. Like you, I personally would never touch drugs, and I would hope my 3 kids don't, but this society we are in, I am not naive enough to believe that there have never been occasions of dabbling. We encourage, educate our kids, but what they do with peers is often very important in their lives.

I couldn't care if he becomes a legend, and yeah either would Ablett, the HOF thing is a load of shit to me, I'm pretty sure Barry Hall got in it last year.
It does piss me off though how everything works.
I can see Carey getting in, in the next 10 years cause he's "sorry" and on TV.
Ablett wont get in until after he's dead because everyone turns into top blokes when they're dead and it will make it more palatable to the AFL.
Also how many true "Legends" are there?
They're gonna run out eventually.

I've never even touched a cigarette- because my next door neighbours father drank and smoked himself into an early grave, iirc when I was about eight years old. My whole family were never smokers, etc, only light drinkers, so i had a good (relaxed) upbringing re. alcohol as well.

But I guess im lucky in that regard, not every child gets that of course.

.
Gary was probably the best player to play the game.
He deserves recognition for this.

His personal life is his own and not our business. .
So you're saying if a good player murders or rapes someone because it's his personal life he should still get recognition?

never saw that referenced but nice reach. :thumbsu:

Lets stick to the topic here and keep the fantasy land Law and Order SVU stuff for the media and entertainment thread.

And if it really bothers you that much, the Social Justice thread is just next door to it.
