The best match I've ever seen was Cats v Bombers at the MCG. I think it was 93. He kicked 14.

Salmon kicked 10 at the other end. We lost the game but Ablett dominated in a pulsating game.

1989 Grand Final
1989 Prelim
1989 vs Collingwood
The game against the Tigers where he kicked 14 off the wing
1993 vs Essendon when he kicked 14
1993 vs North when he kicked 10
1992 vs West Coast - his 150th when he had 36 touches and kicked 5 goals from the centre
1994 vs St.Kilda, when we were down by 5 goals and he single-handedly pulled us over the line with a huge last quarter

Don't know if they have SOO games, but apparently he blitzed in 1984 vs WA

1996 vs Melbourne....kicked 9.6 when Melbourne kicked 8.8.

They're the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

That 1984 State of Origin game v WA would be the one to get! Gazza at his best against the cream of WA and outshining established Victorian stars

In Ken Piesse's book, apparently Gazza was a controversial selection by the great EJ Whitten. You can imagine if BigFooty was around back then how Hawthorn fans would have reacted!!

However, as Teddy had obviously seen gazza up close as the 3GL commentator, and he knew a thing or 2 more about footy than most, Teddy knew exactly what was going to happen

Partridges list is almost complete but there was also a night match vs Carlton in 1985 (or maybe 86?). Gazza was unstoppable even though they ended up playing 3 defenders on him!!

Please don't forget. Regular season 1995. Versus Essendon Geelong had been pretty well down all day. Ablett kicks 4 (atleast two were miraculous for memory) in last quarter and Cats get up. One of my favorite ever games.

Was at that game and it also had a Ben Graham 90 metre ball burster in it as well.

the 1989 game against collingwood in the mud at the MCG is the game i'll remember
The following week was the real mud game, against Essendon.

The Collingwood game was special though. Still can remember Sandy Roberts' call when he kicked the goal of the year, "He's alight Gary Ablett, look at this. Here is the magician at work, he shoots towards goal, what more can you say!?"

The goal in the 89 prelim where marks 60 out, goes to play on, then fakes Paul Hamilton then runs around him with an unbelievable burst of speed then drills it post high from 45m.

Both still send shivers up the spine when I see them.

Looking back now, I consider myself pretty fortunate that I witnessed live most of his career. Made going to the footy a lot of fun, even when we were a less than brilliant side.

Still the best player I've ever seen by a long, long way.

It was 87 night series - pretty sure he kicked 7. The Ablett bootleg video shows just about all of them. He seemed to be able to roost the yellow sherrin further, for some reason.

^^ Agree totally. :thumbsu:

That was my first match ever, as well as my first visit to the MCG. Brilliant. Didnt he kick like 14 out of 18 goals all up? And we lost by 24 points.

First match ever? Jeez Shell, you know how to pick them, I'll give you that. Hope you didn't expect Ablett to do that every week after that!
