He was pretty much the only player trying to get some run out of the backline tonight. I guess when he's the only one trying, then he needs to go the 1-2-1-2-3-1-3-1-2-1 as the teammates aren't helping.

Interesting theory this one. So can we say that Geelong never ever have any run from their backline? Hmmm next theory please.

Re: Stats and Gazza.

Agreed. And to help his Brownlow chances. No other explanation for the cheap 1-2's in the back half when he's under no pressure

It was really over the top tonight.
Great player but smells of accolades. :o

Not that it bothered me, had him as my supercoach captain. I was having supercoach orgasms every time he had cheap 1-2's. :p

FWIW, Ablett is second for contested possessions - 5 behind Judd, although Ablett has played 3 less games...

Code:

Scarlett was good at rebounding tonight.

The second quarter was shocking from us tonight. We couldn't get the ball out of our backline the whole quarter, everyone was standing still.

As the other poster said he gets so many possessions because he runs his arse off. With everyone standing still in the second quarter, Ablett pretty much has to hand the ball off to someone then get it back and then run it to the next teammate, etc etc, drawing opponents.

And yes Aussie Gun Scarlett was good at it tonight, he would have been the main man in the second half. Obviously the rebounding and running was much better after half time so it must have got a fair mention in the rooms

He's starting to be measured pretty hard, to get the ball 40 times (no matter how) is a great game. However, most are handballs or short kicks. He seems to have lost that burst running and rarely kicks long. Maybe the effect of the hard tags or might be carrying an injury that limits his explosiveness.

They're not cheap when it's the way footy is played today, running the ball out of the backline with handballs to weave through a zone.

Just so happens to be that Ablett works the hardest so he's down there doing more than his fair share of work.

Also looked more noticeable tonight with the rest of the side standing still in the first half, Ablett really had no options to run and link handballs with, he needed a clone out there.

Re: Stats and Gazza.

Its official that Ablett is the king of cheap possessions. Cheap possession whore as the OP put it. Dismal way to play football. Team game you chump:thumbsd:

Re: Stats and Gazza.

certainly doesnt mind a few nothing handballs in the back half

Saw 3 possessions in 10 seconds via handballs that went nowhere and did nothing.

As I said on another thread, September, back up the Kleenex truck...

.
You are an absolute idiot. Have you ever played sport at an elite or semi elite level? When you put so much into something, Dedicate years off your life to achieve a goal and fall at the last hurdle it hurts. Bagging Gazza out because he had a cry is very basic. You must have goals in life otherwise you'll never get anywhere. Don't knock someone because they have you covered in life achievements. It takes a ****head like you to sit behind your computer and bag people that are having a go in life. I pity you.

The issue is with the footy watching public who are becoming more and more obsessed by stats, mand use that as a measure of performance, rather than impact on the game.

As an example, Ablett got 40 touches against my mob but i though Byrnes was better.

Peter Matera had 15 touches in his Norm Smith GF

Touches don't mean squat on their own

I think everyone has this misconception that 40 touches is always better than 30. However i saw Kerr rack up 40+ against the hawks last year - and his game was poor.

I get upset by cheap touches as well, Kane Cornes is becoming a master, however the game is all about keeping the ball moving - so if he does rack up 40 touches, with 20 of them being cheapies - who cares - as long as he isn't giving them to the opposition, judge what he does with the other 20.

that is absolute cr@p!

Useless. How about kicking the football long, Gabby? His selfish football makes me happy to know he just failed in winning the Brownlow and Norm Smith:)

As apposed to yourself bagging someone out from behind your keyboard?

And only footballers can achieve something useful in life?

He actually had 18, with 5 goals and 3 behinds. Very damaging game from a midfielder, no matter how you look at it.

That's the point some are making - for the sheer number of touches Ablett gets, he doesn't seem to do enough with them to justify the status that the media and some supporters give him. There's no doubt that Ablett is a great player who works as hard as anyone out there, and I don't entirely agree with this criticisms of Ablett, but I can see where people are coming from - for someone who is averaging 34.4 disposals per game this season, people expect him to have more impact on the scoreboard than he appears to.

then judge the ones that do have impact. it's the obsession of equating touches to performance

if he has 20 cheap touches - it isn't a negative impact on his team, just not a positive one.

if the other 20 are damaging - then treat him as having 20 good touches

it's one of the reason Judd who may get 25 touches would be better than Priddis with 40

So how about when we play you in the first final you let him go free...

Any Collingwood supporter that claims Gary Ablett gets cheap possessions is having a laugh, you have the king of those at the helm in Swan.

Exactly. Ablett's cheapies are just a bonus on top of his damaging possessions, of which he probably has more than most other players anyway.

They aren't a bonus - they are just irrelevant - however you are right - you just count the good ones.

And DIFC - Ablett does get cheap possessions whether you like it or not. Doesn't mean he doesn't have impact on the game - just that those possessions are nought more than a penstroke on the stat sheet
