Agreed, so many handballs off to a player, gets it back, handballs off again, gets it back, and kicks it, in the space of five metres. He is an amazing player at getting out of traffic, beyond that he's nothing special.

I guess you've shut out the last term of the Geelong-Sydney game from Round 5 last year then. Wouldn't surprise me considering you're a Swans fan, and he put you guys to the sword in 30 minutes of brilliance.

On this occasion, it appears to have been one of the least effective 40 possession games you'll see:

Possessions
Gary Ablett - 40
Joel Selwood - 33
Adam Cooney - 29
Matthew Boyd - 25

Champion Data Player Ranking
Gary Ablett - 122
Joel Selwood - 122
Adam Cooney - 123
Matthew Boyd - 122

They might look cheap but he has the best hands in the game. No player in the league can dispose of the ball by hand at his pace. He sets up every clearance with his hands.

You said you braced for it so, YOUR A NOOB!

i lol'ed

he does have very quick hands, i'll give him that

God this thread is IDIOTIC!

Seriously the guy is a total freak of nature and I don't care what anyone says you know that you want him in your side.

Ablett >>>> Swan by a mile.

Why do you care?

If you think Ablett does nothing with his posessions it should not worry you how many times he gets the ball in a game.

Because it's a football forum and things like this are generally discussed?

One thing i have noticed is that there is often a runner on the outside waiting for the ball but Gazza does the old 1,2 and the opportunity is gone. Get it out to the runner straight away and the ball is moved forward quicker = more chance of scoring.

I often have wondered if Gazza is a stats whore.

Hmm, like I said, he can get himself out of traffic with ease (goal at the start of the 4th quarter last week) and against the Swans that means a lot. By nothing special BEYOND that ability he's still up there, but guys like Corey, Selwood, Bartel, Cooney, Cross, Swan, Goodes, O'Keefe, McVeigh, Watson, Mitchell, etc. are all in the same class disposal wise.

i agree the whole 40 possies aura is bullsh!t with him. His 40 are like a lot of players' 30. But there is no denying he had a big impact on the game.

He was as good as untackleable in a game with huge defensive pressure. and his cool head was very useful for the Cats.

I wouldn't say he was BOG. But i'd say he was definitely in the top 5 or 6 on the ground.

So i wouldn't knock him. I'd knock people who uses possie stats as a measure of worth.

I don't care how many possessions he gets to be honest. It's what kind of possession he gets.

Clearances - 3 (poor)
goal assists - 2 (good)
inside 50s - 5 (good)

Re: Stats and Gazza.

Hmm after watching tonights game i am becoming more certain that the OP has merit.

Yeah, he must have made himself captain of his Supercoach team

I love the Ablett bashing around here. He works his arse off to get 40 touches, regularly gets 10-15 contested possessions a game, if not more, and works to make space. Now not all of his give and gets work, but that's usually because he is placed under heavy pressure every time he touches the ball out of a pack. The fact that he gets 35-40 touches on a regular basis is indicative of his work rate.

Good to see plenty of Hawthorn fans in here, they're always such a positive bunch :thumbsu:

Don't know why, but Hawthorn supporters love Geelong supporters....

Whenever I meet one face to face, their shoulders always seem to slump...

normally 1-2's are good for creating space as it draws an opponent but i remember there was a passage of play in the back line where there was no bulldogs player that could get close to ablett yet he 1-2'ed it, i think he is thinking about sc :O. (someone get kissStepahanie on the case)

I'm over bagging Ablett about the 1-2's. He is still a gun and has had to change the way he plays this year but there is no doubt he was just as effective last year with 25 touches as he is this year with 40 touches.

And I am quite certain that anyone who would agree is a fool.

Actually, no, I agree with you. I am sure now that he plays just so he can his name in the paper with "Possessions - 40" next to his name, not because he actually wants work to hard, win the ball and try to dispose of the ball to advantage of Geelong. It has to be because he wants to be in first place on the Herald Sun 'Disposals' leaderboard.
