Just reading through the story from the Sunday Herald Sun:

Cash-strapped star sells gear

I began to wonder what would the one piece of memorabillia of Garys that I would want if i could choose it. Couldn't choose only one so here are my top 3:

My top 3
Boots and Jumper from 89 GF
Full kit from 1000 goals match
Signed photo of Senior, Junior and Nathan

Why does there need to be a reference to this in the article. It is well in the past, i wont go in to my opinions on the issue suffice to say i am in Garys court, but really Scot Palmer has been around long enough to know that this sort of thing does not need to be mentioned in an article like this. Shame on you Scot!!!!

But since he retired in early 1997, he has battled drug problems and depression.

But the family of Alisha Horan, the teenager who died after a drink and drugs binge with Ablett, said the auction was another painful reminder of the hurt the footballer had caused the family.

"Whenever there's something about him, I think we've just had enough, we've just been through the wringer," a family member said.

"Each time I see his face, I just don't want to know."

COULDNT AGREE MORE.

And secondly I am SICK of the people smearing his name about it. The guy took some XTC with another ADULT who CHOOSE of her own free will to also partake. Then she died, which everyone who has every taken ILLEGAL drugs or for that matter legal ones like Fags and Booze KNOWS it a risk, but one they are willing to take at the time for a bit of fun. SO lets smear her name around for a while. Grrrrrr the media are ********ING DOGS.

It was a sad event. NOBODY was to blame aside from the girl who overdosed and the people who MADE an imported the drugs.

Well said! Everyone knows what has occured.

I think it is very Sad that Gaz senior has to sell these items to get by?

If i were GAJ, i would purchase them at the auction without my father knowing and hand them back to him.

I think the club might. Also this has happened in the past with other sports people selling things like Olympic Gold medals and places have brought them to put on public view

This has been my opinion about this from the very start.. and those people who come out with the argument "she was infatuated with him... he had this control over her", etc etc is an absolute load of c-rap. I was totally infatuated by the man too, but there would be no way in hell id go out on a drug n drinking bing with him, let alone anybody else. It was her own choice and unfortunately she paid the ultimate price.

Thankyou Scottydeewah. My opinion as well.

She was an adult and she chose to take drugs.

I know it would be hard for the family to deal with a drug related death, but maybe they should think long and hard about it, and realise that it was actually their daughter's fault.

Once you become an adult, you're responsible for your own actions.

Nice!!!

I might get some money together and try and buy a BIG V Jumper. If not I suppose its what I can afford.

I think one thing the club could do in the future is see if Gaz would like any role at the club as a mentor to the young kids or as a speaker. I understand he may not as he is reclusive but...

They don't want to, they rather spend the money to secure the club future rather than buy items that will just hang in the hall of fame. See here
Considering Geelongs place in the history of football , the GFC should have a long hard look at what the Bombers have done with their Hall of Fame. We should have something equally as good if not better than their HOF but to do it they might have dig into their pockets if they really want to create an attraction that could pull patronage.

So many good things have been lost over the years , 1963 win on film being one of them. Lets hope that if private people do buy them that they are generious enough to display the/store them at Kardina.

The other thing is that its a shame that Gary AS feels he has to sell these objects to get some cash.Im sure its the result of him not being able to stand up and represent himself for past misjudgements. Yes everything said above is true , and nothing will ease the resulting hurt of the family but if Gary could only standup, face his demons, give a few interviews demonstrate some sort contrition in a positive mannor to public , I feel sure he could again avail himself some sort of living related to footy.

Round two, 1996 at Kardinia Park?

Kristian Bardsley was the man Ablett gave a beauty to - five week holiday too.
