God that guy was bad..... remember round one a few years back and Brisbane rolled us by 10 goals thereabouts? At the G. You just put your head in your hands and muttered 'take me to the end of the year'.....
Yep and that was his first game in charge

This will pretty much be a midfielders award, standard. Really depends on who plays the most finals games. I'll go;

Hannebery
Dangerfield
Sloane
Kelly
Cotchin

One of those kents

Surprised Kennedy won it. If you had asked me best player of the final series I would have said Picken. Was basically the man in every Bulldogs game if their finals campaign
Picken was by far the best. I remember watching him play and I said 'who is this guy? Never heard of him before' low and behold he had been playing for about 8 years!

Do we really need another AFL award named after a VFL player? Do we really need another award? Nope.
Well it wouldn't make sense to name it after a player from another league. Probably too early to strike a medal in honour of someone who played exclusively in the AFL era.
Also, yes, it's rather a stupid idea for an official medal.

So there hasn't been a proven finals player in the last 30 years?

I didn't say that. Andrew Macleod from your mob certainly springs to mind, for example. Two Norm Smiths, non-Vic player, honouring an indigenous player. Ticks a lot of boxes. Chris Judd, Adam Goodes, Sam Mitchell, James Hird, or Gary junior would all be worthy choices to name a medal after - eventually. All excellent finals performers, and they're far from alone. I just believe that time ought to pass a while before someone is honoured with their name on a medal or trophy.

Ayres retired at the end of 1993.

Should probably be capped at your best three games (although last year oddly featured two Grand Finalists who played the four weeks). That said, the difference between 3 and 4 games is likely to be negligible, and players from winning sides will mostly tend to get notice.

JP Kennedy since joining the Swans is as consistently excellent a finals player as we've seen, but with the Swans already in cutthroat final mode, you have to back in someone like Matt Crouch or a Cat/Tiger.

Funny a workmate of mine said the same thing after the eagles game and thought he was a draftee!! This guy knows his footy pretty well too. He was shocked when I told him he was one of our few players who have played finals from back in 09.

Understandable as he was a tagger/back pocket before Bevo took over but a shame as he has always been a good player and great team player even without getting the ball.

A lot of people bagging the award but it may gain some pedigree in time or at least help us footy nerds argue over who is/was a better finals player in time to come.

On the second point, I'm annoyed it was introduced in 2016 as Sam Mitchell was an absolute shoe in for 2014 and 2015 and I feel he will end up being (more) underrated in years to come after being runner up in so many awards (2 x Norm Smith, Brownlow, AA's, B&F's) leaving his award tally short of the career he produced. 'Finals player of the year' every other year would've helped - even JPK (a similarly finals dominant player) is getting more finals recognition after his win last year.

Some stats in the Herald Sun yesterday prove how ridiculously good JPK has been in finals for a long time:

Since 2010, Kennedy ranks No.1 in the competition in finals for disposals (29.4 per game). He is also No.1 for contested possessions (16.8), groundball gets (12.4) and clearances (7.3).
