I think years back he actually coached a perfect season (no losses), which is pretty crazy, and now he beat a team full of AFL players. Winning record at both Geelong and Adelaide too, I don't think he wants to be an assistant. Too bad there's probably a stigma against him coming back after all these years.

Always thought he was a coach at Geelong. Was not popular there, but I think we (GFC)were too immature for his style and discipline. Even now some of our supporters decry him, but they do that with CS too.
(Imagine if he became assistant to CS. I reckon we'd lose a bit of supporter base, but it could well work.
We know that's not going to happen.)
GC would be an excellent match.

Ports flag the other year was the result of a very unsettled opposition.
This year though they had a full compliment.
Don’t think he is AFL standard coach, but wouldn’t be surprised if clubs chase him to at least coach their 2nds
Don't be daft, it was down to them literally not losing a game all year.

The other side is that there's plenty of players who are great at VFL (and other state leagues) level, but don't quite make the standard at AFL - surely there's coaches who would be the same. The time/commitment at AFL level is ten-fold greater.

If Ayres gets a Gold Coast gig next year you can guarantee Gazza will leave. His father will make sure about that.
Has Ablett Snr had an opinion worth considering in the last thirty years?

Jnr will be at Geelong in '18.

Ayres will have something to contribute at AFL level, but I doubt he'll get the chance.

I don't think any AFL club would consider him as senior coach - he's had 2 shots at that and not many coaches get a 3rd chance. (Rodney Eade the exception)

However I think they could possibly at least consider him to their football department in a lesser role.

Fairly significant gulf between VFL and AFL. I tend to think the better AFL assistants are well and truly entrenched in the system and I think it'd be great if he was reappointed from a grass roots level, but i highly doubt it with the way the game is played these days.
He has already proved he can handle AFL footy IMHO., but not what the Suns need ?
