I am not a great fan of Lyon's, but I don't know him so can't really say with certainty. Strikes me as a bit fairweather. However we need to realise not everyone can be a Board member or coach - both requiring high level skills at AFL level. I do think he sits on the fence publicly and that does not help his cause in the debate on this board. But give him credit if he does not believe he can coach or contribute on a board. He may also have unknown issues that disqualify him. Also known as 'Dermott Brereton' syndrome.
2009 was extremely compromised. The only draft in history to have an 8 month draft window instead of 12.What about the 12 goal quarter against GWS??? The 12 goal quarter against GWS!
The real difference between Melbourne and the Dogs is that people expect Melbourne to have improved by now. They went to the draft 3 years in a row - before GC & GWS came in. Not only did they get three goes at uncompromised drafts, they did so when the Dogs were still playing prelims. The expectation (obviously not the reality) is that the Dees should have a core of top young players who are a few years ahead of the development curve as their red, blue & white counterparts.
6 bottom 6 finishes in a row, and currently sitting 2nd last only because they have played GWS. If the Dogs are in this sort of poop in 3 years time expect all manner of shit to be flung in their direction.

I'd say four times the wins, and a much larger percentage is a bit of a difference. We've scored 200 more points than you and conceded 100 less.
I know being better than Melbourne is no achievement but I still can't believe Garry is trying to drag us down to the mire that is the MFC.Bravo!
Just tried to use Schwartz's comments on Open Mike (that he doesn't believe that Neeld is the right man for the job) to prove that having a prominent position in both a football club and the media is untenable.
Funny how there was no mention of Dunstall or Eddie.
He has a point in that it limits what you are able to say and get away with without it contradicting one of your jobs. I seem to remember a few people getting upset when Eddie started saying Malthouse would be great for Carlton midway through last season (though it's funny how that turned out in hindsight). There is no way that Schwartz could take a senior position at Melbourne if he was going to say that he believes the coach isn't the right man for the job in his media role.
It is definitely not untenable though. It was an oversight from Schwartz to allow the answer to be asked, let alone go to air.
Eddie handled his Open Mike interview fine earlier this year.
Schwartz didn't say Neeld isn't the right man for the job. He just said he didn't believe he would be coach in 2014. There is a difference.
He said he doesn't know Neeld as a coach so he can't comment on Neelds suitability for Melb other than how the team appears to play. Still no big deal. I thought it was a well considered comment. He said he didn't think the group was playing for him.
I agree its certainly a position you could hold, it would just limit your ability to do one job over the other. I'm not too sure whether Schwartz is actually going to gain an official role at the MFC. I remember him offering his services but since then nothing.
