He also said he's not interested in doing it.

Right or wrong it's his choice, and Melbourne need people who are willing to commit a significant amount of time towards fixing the club. Gary doesn't want to. It's hard work and it could damage his reputation and standing in the game.

He prefers being a respected member of the media and mucking around on TFS with his best mate JB on a Thursday night.

Your argument collapses at this point.

and what do people want Gary Lyon to actually do that he is capable of doing to help Melbourne become competitive? Pull on the boots? Coach them after being out of the game for far too long? Become president or a member of their board? Click his fingers and make it all go away?

Is that you, Gary?

Seriously, Lyon is the sort of guy who would infuriate me if I supported Melbourne. He's in one minute, out the next. He's bagging them out, but then goes on to say he can't help them. The sickening thing is that he's got an exceptional football brain and would be a far better coach that what most would think. But no, Gary's too wonderful to be associated with the current train wreck. He can't take time out of his busy schedule of working 6 hours a week on TV to help the club that made him what he is.

Agree with this.

It is Garry's choice to do what the hell he wants in life, but I don't buy into the 'too busy to help' line he keeps going down. Brayshaw and Eddie would arguably be busier than Garry, and yet hold down important roles at there clubs. Garry simply is either too afraid to fail, or just doesn't give a sh*t. Probably both. It's hard watching the likes of Buckley, Hird and Voss all with the desire and passion to improve and coach there beloved clubs, and put there knackers on the line. All Garry has to do is cop a few jibes from Sammy on the Footy Show. Good on him if that's what he wants in life, but as a Melbourne supporter we know he could offer a lot more than what he does. He simply chooses not to. We need to move on...

It has been plainly obvious for years that he's afraid of failure. It's why he's never coached at AFL level.
1 Million % spot on. Take a bow. Probably the most accurate comment ever posted on this forum.
Way to egotistical to ever take the risk of failing. Much to hard a caper for Lyon. Kudos to every bloke who has put his orchestra stalls on the line and coached regardless of being good or bad.

Why would they want lyon, what does he know about winning flags or success? They need someone from the outside with a firm hand to come in and take charge not another melbourne person.

If anything lyon is doing the best thing for the dees, why take a job you are not keen on and obviously do not believe you are the right person for

Gary Lyon and Dermott Brereton both put the riches of the media instead of coaching, which is fine.

As Bomb stated Lyon had done enough damage.

They're very similar. Both way too attached to their own ego, their pay packets, and the mythical glorification of their playing careers to maintain their status as football demigods.

Both played on too long when they knew they were broken down as well. I'm guessing neither gave their pay packets back.

The real problem is the football world's perception of Garry Lyon being a football expert. If you listen to his 'special comments' during a game, they are rarely more advanced than "team X has got to go in harder".

He took an advisory role for the Bailey/Neeld coaching appointments and gave his input, that is all. This is not uncommon. Robert Walls and David Parkin have done this over the years, as well as Tom Harley at the Bulldogs (no doubt as a reference for Brendan McCartney).

It's not his fault that the Melbourne FC took it up and ran with it, but anyone with a decent level of competence in their football department would have picked up that Lyon gave a ringing endorsement for old team mate Peter Rohde to the Bulldogs back in 2003. Surely that was enough to scare anyone off.

The fish rots at the head.

Be fair, he used that incredible football brain of his to predict Geelong to win the wooden spoon in 2007. He was only slightly out with that prediction.

Hmm, one glance at how he managed his own life and you'd keep him away from managing a multi-million dollar organisation. Next.
I heard Schwartz on SEN tonight say something to the effect of (paraphrasing here) "Garry needs to sort his own life out/get his house in order". Does anyone know what he was referring to?

Or he just prioritises his family over making his work life even busier...

I can't stand Gary but ultimately it's the administration's decision on what he does and doesn't do. If they allow him to half commit, they are liable, not Gary. Gary's merely providing help in good faith I'd assume.

Schwartz things Gary's house is messy perhaps?

Frank Costa found the time and I imagine he is a lot busier than GL

I don't know. I can see Gary's point. But couldn't he at the very least just sit on the board?? Surely attending a few meetings etc won't kill his diary

Who are we to judge Lyon's life balance? Personally, outside of work my family keep me very busy. Adding further to work commitments would be the last thing I'd want to do. Hell, I struggle just finding time to get to the gym.

Can someone please explain to me what secret talent Gary Lyon has that everyone seems to think will save Melbourne? If Neeld & Craig are having trouble getting the players to have a go then I can't see Gary Lyon doing any better.

Using Kosta as an example as for why Lyon should step up is flawed too. Kosta is very rich business man who had people who could run his empire while he put time into Geelong. Lyon is a media presenter whose main income is from that. So if he stops being in hte media to help Melb how does he make money? I think the Lyon fairytale is just that, a fairytale.

Look, I said I think he's entitled to say no. But weighing everything up, I don't think sitting on the board would be asking too much. Can anyone out there in BF land tell me how much time you would need to commit just to sit on the board (not chair) ?

I've always thought of Gary Lyon as a fence sitter. Always neutral when discussing any AFL issue to avoid getting his nose out of joint with people within the AFL circles. The only responsibility he seems to enjoy is carrying on like a buffoon on the footy show and triple m commentary. JB, Eddie, Dunstall are some examples who have been capable of juggling their roles.

These men also have a conflict of interest in being AFL media commentators which is something I find frustrating when I listen to them and how they inevitably make everything about their club. At least Lyon has integrity on that issue.

Gary Lyon for one could sit on the board and give efforts in terms of membership and direction.
He could become the list manager or heaven forbid a part-time development coach.

The administrative side is not a problem for Melb. They have cut their debt back a lot and financially are on a firm footing. So they don't really need anyone to give them direction.

Melb's probs in the football department. Do you really want a guy who hasn't played footy in over ten years to be a development coach? Really get a grip.

I find Brayshaw and Dunstall to be objective commentators, but not so much with Eddie.

Brayshaw I can sort of agree with but Dunstall is all about Hawthorn all the time. But the problem is that if something is going on at their club and they are bound to keep it quiet inevitably that means they have to lie about it on TV and they are all guilty of doing that at various times.
