Don't get me wrog, I wish we'd hired him. But saying he interviewed us is just bs. He had a shit reputation by the time Essendon sacked him, and for good reaosn.

Excuse me but he made a recommendation to the Melbourne Board that they hire Mark Neeld. It's called a conflict of interest to actually adjudicate on Neeld's performance in those circumstances. In normal circumstances, most people would feel a responsibility to give Neeld a break, if they selected him. However, in Lyon's case, he obviously doesn't feel that Neeld deserves his support, even though he picked the guy. In either case, whether he supports or criticises Neeld, Lyon's work as a journalist is compromised.

So if he did support Neeld, Lyon would at least be backing up his choice, even if his work as a journalist is compromised.

The fact that Lyon doesn't support Neeld doesnt help him. His work is still compromised but he also ends up looking like a gutless wimp.
All people who wear 2 hats (eg McGuire, Brayshaw) have similar conflicts, conflicts that people are more than aware of.

If Lyon has criticised Neeld, despite help appoint him as coach, it's not as if he's making comments that sheds a better light on the decision Lyon previously made. If he were to come out and laud him as being a supercoach in the face of ordinary performances by the Dees, that would be more questionable.

Damned if you, and damned if you don't with some people. Or are you suggesting he should say "no comment" in his role in the football media for forever and a day?

Eddie was behind the handover from Malthouse to Buckley. Should he not say anything about that when asked?

Yes, Eddie does have conflicts of interest when there are stories about Collingwood players. In fact, he needs to stay clear of much of the stuff that Caroline Wilson and the bald guy indulge in, with regards to speculation etc, because he is a President of an AFL club and has a responsibility to the League. Eddie's employers at Nine and Fox understand that under their contractual relationship with him.

In contrast, the Collingwood members believe that, when push comes to shove, Eddie will be loyal to the Collingwood Football club, ahead of his other relationships. He has stated just that. It would seem to me that it's because of this that fans from other clubs have forced the Nine network in the past to withdraw Eddie from commentating on Collingwood games, even if he is one of the better callers around. I would argue that Jason Dunstall and Dermott Brereton have demonstrated significant bias towards Hawthorn ( or a similar conflict of interest) in their commentaries, but the Fox network hasn't been required to act because there isn't a similar anti-Hawthorn feeling in that case to the anti-Collingwood feeling that stops Eddie from commentating.

So getting back to Lyon, the same holds true for him. He can't have input into the coaching choice and then critique it afterwards. He has no credibility as a "journalist" if he does. The conflict of interest should be the concern of his employer at Nine. It doesn't have anything to do with the fans, unless they choose to tell Nine that they no longer believe Lyon when he talks about Melbourne. In fact, I haven't believe Lyon on that issue for a number of years.

Independent of this whole conflict of interest thing, it was gutless for Lyon to appoint Neeld and then to criticise him.

No idea why people want Garry Lyon? No idea? Can't recall he's ever said he wanted to coach Melbourne. I think he may have said if anything it would've always been a bit of a dream but that's it. Why do people believe he's the only person who can fix the MFC? It seems to get more and more ridiculous each time there's a problem with that club. Knee jerk reaction from most media outlets and some MFC supporters.

ever since he retired playing he gave up on his full time commitment to the Dees, and will not return to it, people should respect that

I didn't watch footy classified but heard Garry was back up to old form last night.

One Demons win against a team of kids, after trailing for three quarters and suddenly they are ok while he feels the need to rip into the Bulldogs.

Like clockwork, Garry.

They really just compared the stats of both coaches careers. Which are glaringly similar, it seemed more likely he was just making a point that Melbourne's coach has perhaps being targeted unfairly in his second year in tenure.

This. Just dumbfounded that his name keeps coming up in these situations and that he was involved with appointing Neeld. Why is he seen as some kind of answer? Isn't he just a commentator/footy media personality who happened to play with Melbourne with as much idea about the modern game as most footy commentators ie not much?

Teams other than GC/GWS Macca has beaten - with a side deemed bottom four certs: Melbourne, Brisbane, Port Adelaide, North Melbourne.

Teams other than GC/GWS Neeld has beaten - with a full of quality youth that was tipped for finals in 2012: Essendon (by 6 points).

Also, half of the Bulldogs' senior players have been injured in that time.

The main difference is that the Bulldogs have been rebuilding for 2 years and the Demons have for 10 years.
So compare how many first round draft picks the demons have had compared to the bulldogs.

People tend to forget the difference between Lyon and McGuire; McGuire has the marbles to take on multiple commitments and make them work.

Bulldogs haven't been beaten by 148 points yet this year. That's why the heat is on Melbourne's coach. No conspiracy here.

Bulldogs have been gunning for a flag in the past five years, including several preliminary final appearances. They have an excuse to be bottom.

Melbourne have been bottom for what seems like forever and have gained countless top draft picks. They have no excuse to still be absolutely shit.

Comparing Neeld and McCartney is completely pointless without context.

Lyon has said countless times he is not interested. Now I dislike him as much as anybody, but if he doesnt want to take on a role at Melbourne FOR WHATEVER REASON then thats his entitlement.

I cannot believe how much shit has been thrown at a guy who is not remotely involved with Melbournes current dilemma. I can only imagine how much shit he would cop if he did take a role on.

But you didnt watch it?

I didnt see it either so I wont jump to conclusions until I do.

Is doesn't neccessarily have anything to do with marbles. I wouldn't take on a role at another organisation as I'm busy enough at my current one and I value my time with friends and family more highly.

He has been 'involved' with Melbourne ever since he retired, he's just never been committed.

Bacon & eggs breakfast - Lyon is the chook, not the pig.

Melbourne's wins: GWS*3, GC, Essendon
Bulldog's wins: GWS, GC, Port, North, Brisbane, Melbourne

It is glaringly similar because Melbourne has had the opportunity to boost its percentage with games against expansion sides.

Did Lyon address the margins? Looking at the W/L columns don't explain the manner of the wins or losses.

he did address margins through comparing percentages but it is still quite meaningless as a side like North is harder to beat by 50+ points than say GWS.
