He doesn't want to do it, what's the problem? Not every politico wants to be PM.

My view is that Melbourne needed to slap down media titilation through a strong president. They've only just got Misson, Neeld and Craig, there is a time lag. They needed to be strong and have faith in their vision, not jump at shadows and buckle under to outside speculation.

Bailey did pretty well in my view, like Ratten, but the club suffered from grandiosity. Bailey developed the team well enough. But having made one error in sacking Bailey, they compound it by looking to purge the whole dept.

Now it has a nasty inertia of its own. The only coach who can break the log-jam is an established coach. That will set the club back another 2 years.

Problem is, we got too rich too quick.

We figured that because everything was going so well off field, that by nature it would translate to a premiership. But Schwab had the idea that youth = premiership and he forced it on Bailey. He turned a lot of people off with that rationalisation.

REVERED Melbourne identity Garry Lyon has dismissed calls to step in and help fix the Demons, saying he does not have the time.

But what if he thinks he isn't qualified to be the man to lead them out of the doldrums?

Better to know your limitations and stay out of it than go in their acting like you're the messiah only to end up doing more harm than good.

I'd say he'd be 100% correct - but that he should then stay the **** away from the Club in any kind of management/admin or decision making capacity.

If I was a Melbourne supporter, I'd be filthy with the way he acts; floating in and out of the Club, seemingly always making it about himself. Happy to be involved when it suits him, but not taking any responsibility or being held to account when it goes to shit.

He obviously cares about the Club, be a supporter and ex-player and love the joint, but stay out of the management functions.

If he is a media man, then he should stick to the media and not help select the coach. When I saw that he had made negative comments about Neeld's coaching, I shook my head. How gutless is that. He talks the talk but he's not too keen on the walking side of it. Cardboard cut-out and Melbourne should forget about him.

Lyon is part of the problem, not the solution
I'm sure Lyon provides many services to the Melbourne Football Club. Unfortunately, the substance of those services appears to be more huff than puff. Some people can't pony up when required, others can.

Give the guy a break. He's had a rough couple of years with his personal life, and of course one of his best mates dying. He loves the media and never wanted to do any coaching/admin work at the club (at this point anyway). The fact he's done anything is a credit to him. Knowing Gary, if things get too bad, he'll jump in (probably unwillingly) and put the club before his personal happiness. I wouldn't say many here would do the same.

Guy is a champ and people need to the back the f*ck off (to put it bluntly :)).

So many arm chair heroes here who have done sh*t all for their clubs...especially compared to Gary. As always you're all very tough and all knowing behind your computer screens.

See this is the mentality I don't understand - if he's a media man it's his job to talk about Neeld and other coaches.

People accuse him of being soft on Melbourne if he doesn't criticise them, yet people tell him to butt out if he does. He can't win.

Typical Sheedy bollocks, he just wasn't successful, and he got offended. In hindsight I wish we took him, but he didn't knock us back, he wanted the Demons bad.
It never got to the stage of whether he was successfull or not because he didnt want the job after he finished his interview. There must of been something he didnt like when he went for the interview to sway him away and fair enough too. He probably thought the team was more of a basket case than he expected and as it turns out he was probably right with the decision he made

According to Sheedy 4 years after the fact, of course. He's full of shit.

Excuse me but he made a recommendation to the Melbourne Board that they hire Mark Neeld. It's called a conflict of interest to actually adjudicate on Neeld's performance in those circumstances. In normal circumstances, most people would feel a responsibility to give Neeld a break, if they selected him. However, in Lyon's case, he obviously doesn't feel that Neeld deserves his support, even though he picked the guy. In either case, whether he supports or criticises Neeld, Lyon's work as a journalist is compromised.

So if he did support Neeld, Lyon would at least be backing up his choice, even if his work as a journalist is compromised.

The fact that Lyon doesn't support Neeld doesnt help him. His work is still compromised but he also ends up looking like a gutless wimp.

He sounded like he was supporting him on FC, but what really shone through was how much he respects Craig.

IMO, Craig will be caretaker soon enough and will hopefully stick around to work with an experienced coach who isn't such a hardarse.

The Neeld-Craig combo doesn't work because they don't bring anything different to the table.

Maybe he's just capable of realising he made a mistake?

I know that's an alien concept on bigfooty, but some people are able to do it.

Isn't Gary enstranged/split from his wife?

He has children and I think it would be tough to run a club or coach while being a single father + media commitments (which he doesn't want to give up given how highly paid he is).
I don't think the ox is talking about the problems of separation in this case

No thats what he thought. Whether u think he is full of shit or not doesnt matter as he has the runs on the board when it comes to coaching. He wouldve been a better coach than Neeld in any case. Listening to Neelds before the match talk to his players last week confirms how poor a coach he is

I like Melbourne and I'd like to say I'm a closet D's fan but...

On the footy show he was talking to Ollie Wines and talking about how his mum was crying after his name was read out in the draft.
After Lyon said something along the lines of "she cried because you got drafted to Port"

HMMMMMMMMMMM... So Jimmy Toumpas must be stoked where he is right now.

So Gaz

Sheedy has the runs on the board as an absolute bs artist and a historical revisionist.
