Who likes Gary Numan?

Cars and Are Friends Electric give me chills everytime I hear them.

Those old analog synths sound huge.

I love his work. Loved his Tubeway Army stuff. Big fan of Pleasure Principle and Telekon albums. For later albums, I quite enjoy Beserker and The Fury.

From what I've read (and heard of him in interviews), he's not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed.

I'll go out on a limb here and say that many of today's artists wouldn't be anything without his influence. A true pioneer (as far as synth based rock goes)!

Discuss!!!

He may sound dumb in interviews(I haven't heard him btw) but he has a private pilots license and flew around the world

A friend of mine was working in the Outback-a total fool of a man (but I never questioned his integrity). He also had a Pilot's license and was always flying. The regs are probably alot tighter now, but not so in the '80's. On the subject of Gary though, the only reason he got his license and took that world trip was to minimise his tax bill (at the request of his accountants). It also nearly sent him to the wall financially (they forgot to mention when to stop spending money). Having said that, please don't confuse my remarks with me dissing him (he wouldn't be the ONLY dumb muso) as I maintain that some artists wouldn't be doing what they do without his contribution to music on the whole. And you're right-flying around the world requires a little more than sub-human intellect.

and I think he plays most of the instruments on his albums.

Not correct. Tubeway Army (Are friends electric?) featured Paul Gardiner on Bass, and Jess Lidyard (his Uncle) on drums, with Gary handling Vox/Gtr/Kbds. The lineup was later expanded for future releases. I am referring to his his groundbreaking era-leading up to '82ish. On some later albums though, he programmed all his keyboards (The Fury), and even had sponsorship with Roland.

As an aside, I reckon he'd be a top bloke, who wouldn't root your missus or smoke the last bong.

What about we are glass - I have tried to get a reasonable "Best of" but all you can get is some crap live recording which sounds very cheezy!

Probably only runs second to KISS in the number of live records he's brought out over the years and unlike KISS, Gary will never have to answer to accusations that he "enhanced" the quality of the recording in the studio afterwards. His mid-80s effort "White Noise" has some bloke screaming out for "I Die You Die" between every song until finally Gary plays it and shuts the prick up for a while.

A little hit and miss for me, but then a lot of the keyboard based music of the era was. "Cars" and 'We are Glass" are absolute classics and "Are Friends Electric" is another good one. I have a 2-CD collection, "The Best of Gary Numan 1978-1983", which is pretty good, but I haven't listened to it for a couple of years.

What was that fantastic song that the Foo Fighters covered of Gary Numan's? That is truly great [if only I could remember what it was called]

I remember it now it is "Down in the Park" - very brooding and atmospheric!
