Mooney kicks 4 goals on Polak and there is chatter about Polak making an encouraging debut.

Ottens kicks 4 on Gaspar and there are calls to sack Gaspar and outright condemnation of him.

I think sometimes people see what they want too. We want Polak to be a success and have done well - so that is what we see. We want Gaspar replaced and are so used to him being a scapegoat - so that is what we see.

Ottens missed a few and should have had 7 goals where as polak was very ordinary in first half improved dramatically in the second half with his judgement and timing I thought.Gaspar was very ordinary the whole game
and has to learn how to get in front of his opponent to counteract the new hands in the back rule but I don't he's fast enough or agile anymore.

Not a fair comparison.

Gaspar we know all about. Polak we are still to learn about.

One gets ridden for past indiscretions, the other gets a chance before judgement is passed

But this is just my point.

One is being judged on past indiscrections, the other is being cut slack.

Neither is being judged on the merits of what they did on Sunday afternoon.

I think you guys are underating the performance of Ottens. He is in the best shape he has been in and is a very capable player. The one time Gaspar played on another player (King). He made King look stupid. One on One Ottens is going to beat even the best full backs a ot of the time this year.

This is a Gas thread.

Gas has been shi t for years.
Polak only for 4 quarters.
I see it how it is.

cam mooney is a good player

ottens is a handbag

atleast polak was in the play linking up with raines getting out of trouble while subpar was playing with his curls

The new hands in the back rule will definately help a tall marking forward like Ottens. It will help him considerably.

The difference there is gaspar has had many poor performances over the last 5 years or so and he's not young anymore whereas polak is still a youngster
and showed some good signs in the second half against the cats.

One difference,

Polak took some strong grabs and had a fair few disposals setting up some rebound, Gas didnt and never does. Also if Ottens wasnt rested he looked like he would have kicked 12 on Gaspar, Mooney never looked liked doing that and did get a couple of lucky ones

Wasn't it gaspar who handballed to a geelong player and they got a goal out of it?.

more than likely  i also recall him bending down to pickup a redhot ball about 15 out directly in front, he fumbled it straight into the mits of a geelong player who snapped truly. I used to be a big fan of Gas, but he does that all too often, doesnt have the ability to hold it up and camouflage it like some of the better defenders do.

I think that was the incident I meant and it might have been gary ablett junior who snapped the goal.

Gasper is a one-year insurance policy for the development of Thursfield, McGuane, Moore or maybe JON. The fact that he is on the veterans list makes his premium even cheaper.

He is an old dog not really capable of new tricks, so you wont see him running of half back, being a link player, or drawing the man with fake handballs or sidesteps.

He is there to frustrate the 195+ fwd, to keep that player to 4 goals or less. In the process he will allow the younger guys to develop on the number 2 and 3 fwds and therefore prevent morale sapping crushing defeats. Hall is on our list for a similar reason.

So if Gaspar can keep a Lloyd, Hall, Pavlich, Brown etc. to 4 goals a week (ala Ottens) he has actually done his job.

Once the young kids have shown they can do the same or better, then the Gaspers and Halls of this world become obsolete.

PS: By the way the new hand-in-back rule would have hurt AK far more than it will Gaspar.

I have more faith in Thursfield than I do in McGuane or Moore.

Ahhh Thursfield, that seasoned veteran we love to pump up.....after how games remind me? Kid shows a bit in one game and he's the next Jakovich! Our young players have enough pressure to make it without the weight of our unrealisitic expectations.

It is a unpopular thought but Will is a long long way from replacing Gaspar yet. I hope like hell he proves me wrong but I think we can get used to seeing Gas at full back a while yet. Bag him all you like but fact is we don't have a better option.

Thanks christ someone has thought this Thursfield thing out logically.
He played a good debut game on O'Loughlin and kept Riewoldt quiet in round 1, and helped himself to one possession. Yep 1 possession in 3½ qtrs of football. If Thursfield turns out to be 20% as good as what those on here say he already is, then we have a triple Brownlow Medallist on our hands. At the moment, if he's getting one kick and keeping a gun quiet, then he's probably no better or worse than Gaspar. Only thing that makes Thursfield a better long-term option is that if he can learn to accummulate possessions, then he won't use the ball as badly as Gas.
By the way, I think Thursfield has ability, but let the kid play 40 games without busting a knee first.

Obviously you didn't see him towel up Riewoldt last year where as I was at that game and saw it for myself.Had he not injured his knee we had very good chance of winning because riewoldt kicked 2 goals within 3 or 4 minutes and the game was over.I was also at the game he debuted and very impressed with his decision making and poise,he seemed to be very comfortable at the elite level which is a great sign for things to come.

We all saw it but it was one game. We also all saw Chris Pym carve up Carlton on a wing one Friday night ... exactly. If all our one game wonders lived up to those efforts Punt Rd would be covered in the gold of all our excess melted-down premiership cups.

Good prospect. Shown some encouraging signs. Fingers crossed he is a gem. But dumping Gaspar before Thursfield string 10-12 solid games together is foolish.

Let's get this into prospective weaver, gaspar is washed up has been for 3 or 4 years.Thursfield is our future so he needs all the experience time out on the field he can get.Stop thinking negatively about our youngsters and start thinking for the future.I'd rather take a risk on a kid than a hack like gaspar who's only interest is if he can squeeze out another year or two of his contract.

:) Dean Notting, Terry Keays, Steven Ryan, Shane Morrison, Tim Fleming, Martin McGrath, Tom Roach, Richard Lounder, John Mrakov, Ashley Blurton, Adam Slater....the list goes on.

They all had ONE good game, sometime.

One game does not make a career.

polak has been pretty ordinary since his debut season 5 yrs ago or doesnt his performances count for his previous club.

imo polak is a forward he hangs back and is far to reactive to be a defender.

gaspar should have been delisted yrs ago or traded to fremantle at the end of 2001. how a bloke with such poor skills has lasted in the system as long as he has is beyond me.

what is also beyond me is why wallace has refused to draft tall kpps with earlyish picks. it is killing us.its even more puzzling when the early picks are mostly going on skinny hb flanker types.
