Saw David King on First Crack tonight suggesting that it was time for Melbourne to 'Break up the Beatles' and trade one or more of Gawn, Petracca, Oliver and/or Viney in order to commit to a rebuild while they still have value. We know Petracca and Oliver tried their luck last year and the Dees decided to hold them to their contracts and there's been rumours that Kozzy Pickett also wanted to be traded. There are two more drafts before Tasmania receive their entry package into the league so logic would dictate that this year would be the very last opportunity for a club to commit to a rebuild before it's too late.

So, do you think it's time for the Dees to break up the Beatles?
The answer to the thread title is Yes and you missed Kozzie in the title

I’d let one of Oliver or Petracca walk. Most likely Oliver. Take unders for him.

My gut feeling is Petracca is the one you want at the club in a rebuild. Of course I don’t know for sure, but my interpretation of the reports is that Petracca was sick of the overall club culture; whereas Oliver is part of the culture that Petracca is sick of.

Pickett seems gone and a top 10 pick plus a future first with a 2nd rounder in return seems reasonable to me (they can bluster all they want about 3 first rounders but it won’t happen).

I’d be interested in trades for Fritsch & Salem types too, not midfielders & rucks. I’d dangle those 2. Easily replaced role wise, even if not necessarily as talented to start.

Now, without having a good early pick it’s not the year to “play the kids” unless they are ready. I’d be looking at inching towards every win they can. They can definitely win games, just not make a dent in finals I think.

If they could walk away with top 10 pick for Pickett, a top 15 pick for Oliver, and a couple of 2nd rounders for Fritsch & Salem it still injects around 5-6 top 30 picks. Not quite a Richmond haul but you can rejuvenate the list quickly with also delisting Billings, McAdam & Hore types.

From there they have to just prioritise forwards in the draft. 2 genuine talks, 1 small, 1 medium flanker with their first 4 picks (let’s say 8, 12, 23, 25). In my world they’ve lost Pickett, ANB & Fritsch in 2 years, while not having any effective talls since Brown/McDonald. The only draftee to come in are JVR & Tholstrup, who I think have serious doubts on whether they make it, and the rest of replacements are Turner & Melksham types.

You back in Rivers, Windsor, Langford, Lindsay as the next gen mids while having Trac & Viney for another 3-4 years, Trac going 50/50 forward/mid.

Petty just has to be locked in as a defender. Too much time invested now to take a trade on him. You’ve also got Lever for a couple of years, & McVee. Stick fat with the defence.

It’s just they finally need to pay draft attention to the forward line. Ignored for too long. Plus the added benefit of getting these kids in to grow together, so you don’t end up with the current cohesion levels.

And I’d be looking at prioritising developing a ruck alongside Gawn, now. Give a young ruck 10-12 games as a 2nd ruck & 3rd forward, 2-3 as the only ruck (Gawn rested) & then some time in VFL.
Why wouldn't you ask for Murphy reid as a straight swap for pickett?

I don't think you'll get much for clarry compared to petracca. You know i reckon you could jagga Smith for petracca, then you'd have Langford, Lindsay, reid and Smith as a real core and I think that would turn your fortunes around fast with a coach that has an attacking game plan.

I'd be looking for a backup ruck to rest Max and allow him to play longer, Salem and fritsch should get you good picks.

I'd like to see more time put into sharp as a player either fulltime wing or on ball starting. Same with Henderson instead of just defensive forward, both have pace, something your midfield lacks.

I think any prospective coach and list manager would be be pretty happy to take on Melbourne. But you need Goodwin and richo gone, have choco coach this year and tell him to coach to win, he can coach

3W & 6L for Melbourne now with a game against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba to come next week. It's going to be pretty tough to come back from 3W 7L in the second half of the season...

Should they just rip the bandaid off and do everyone a favour at the end of the year by trading out some of the guys that don't want to be there?

Yes they should. Oliver had 14 touches yesterday and was reduced to tagging. His trade value is diminishing by the week. Had a perfect out last year. The thing is he can still play, it’s just that he needs a club that will allow him to be his best again. Melbourne is a mess.

It’s time to junk the dead wood or older players and start again like Hawthorn did. Just pay Goodwin out and get him away from the place. It’s finished. Officially finished. I will say that yesterday was mostly the fault of the MFC players for not kicking straight, but we’ve been talking about that since the failed 2022 season. Nothing has changed.

Issue is also that we’ve got an amateur for a president, a CEO that isn’t staring until September and a board conflicted because we’ve recently broken a premiership drought and are clinging on with ok efforts for 1/2 a game.

The difference between good clubs and Melbourne is that they don’t flash in a pan once every 60 years.

Clayton is untradeable due to the contract and the ship sailed on viney.

It’s almost like he will need to accept that he might not get picked up so he’ll need to maybe stay at Melbourne to earn his million a year and then leave. I mean you could convince me to play for Melbourne for a million for another 4 years or whatever. I really would just think of the money.

Fair to say the Demons' 2025 season is officially over now. They'd need to win 8 of their last 9 games to even have a chance of qualifying and that's just not going to happen when they've still got games to come against the likes of Collingwood, Adelaide, Bulldogs and Hawthorn.

So... do they dig their heels in and once again hold their players to their contracts or commit to a rebuild by trading some of them while they still have value on the open market?

It’s probably time for the tier 2 and 3 players to develop and step up. We’d likely benefit from improved coaching, goal kicking and yes, looking to the future. I actually don’t know anymore, it’s not up to the fans, it’s up to highly paid coaches.

I look at Collingwood who has an elite system and coaching structure without many star players. Melbourne have wasted the golden years. The peak of Gawn, Petracca, May, Lever and Oliver.

Melbourne don't have the small forward stocks to move past an almost 34 year old Jake Melksham which is a worry

Gawn's ok (body going to break before long though). The others and May should be marched out asap as well as the coach and list manager.

Less to do with them being useful footballers and more to do with selfish, pathetic, petulant attitude and embarrassing example they set.

Simon Goodwin's behaviour is more unpredictable than Vince Russo and Vince McMahon combined lol
Vince McMahon at least had the good sense to give his young talent an opportunity, and let his veterans walk away, instead of trying to match the money Eric Bischoff was willing to pay. Especially the ones with known (or alleged) substance abuse issues.

Goodwin on the other hand...

You and Xtreme can debate that one lol

Melksham's alright just old and done

Oliver is done at the Dees.

If he is willing to renegotiate his contract terms and play for around 800K a year for 4 years, then I still think the Cats should go for him (although there are definitely some better midfield targets now).

Not sure what the Dees would want, but couldn't ask for much from us to take that ridiculous salary off their books surely.

Nah we'll take him down at Tigerland.
