Blight trusted young players in their positions that benefited their skill set.

Whereas our current coach plays Pedlar as a defensive forward in an attempt to "trick" a multi-flag opposition coach.
Best coaches use players to their strengths & ditch those not suitable to their system.

Yeah looking back, it’s no wonder so many ex AFL players of that era struggle with many long term effects of concussion. Last year I got to attend a conference with Johnny Platten as a guest speaker. He says he has no memory at all of the last quarter of a grand final he won. He went on to say how difficult family life was from all the changes due to his many concussions. That Nigel Smart one was terrible!

I really don't understand this at all. It's not just AFL (VFL) players/clubs that didn't understand concussion. It was happening at all levels and age groups. Nobody has been doing an NFL and trying to impact research and deliberately put Aussie rules players at risk. It's nothing more than a cash grab because the AFL is now flush with it. The clubs and league in Platten's day were all broke or going broke paying their wages. Any payouts these players get should be limited to the amount of money the club/league had at the time. The Bears and Eagles saved the league with their license fees, it was a shambles and worth nothing.

Respectfully my friend, until you have lived with a brain injury, and concussion is a mild Brain injury, I think it’s hard for you to dictate how you limit whatever compensation a player receives. Damage to brain tissue is forever. The brain can produce new neurons, but neurons can’t survive on damaged brain tissue and therefore you can never ever be the same. I’m 6 years into my brain injury and can’t drive, can’t work and I’m both physically and cognitively impaired. I’m delighted that the AFL are at least trying to do more to protect the head.

Agree with what the AFL are doing now, what I'm saying is that it's not just AFL/VFL level players with concussion caused long term brain injury. Players at all levels were doing it, but they're not suing because a $50k payout would bankrupt the club, so there's no point to it. But reality is that the clubs/league at the time were not negligent as there was no knowledge of the issue. Even now, we see modern players going back out or refusing to come off despite the knowledge. Trying to extract money from the clubs/AFL is wrong as far as I'm concerned.

Sorry to hear about your brain 8njury, sounds very tough. I am not aware of any brain injury for me, but I was knocked out 3-4 times during my playing days and suffered numerous head knocks that didn't render me unconscious. If you asked my missus how many CTE symptoms I exhibit, you wouldn't get much change from all,of them. But then I score high on ADD tests, so who knows.
